I debated for a few months on getting wallpaper for the living area of our rental unit here in the city. I had hung wallpaper before, but I didn't enjoy it. So when I bought a wallpaper mural for my upstairs bath, I kinda dreaded the thought of it again. And then I considered the cost of the mural itself and the fact that the wallpaper would have to be cut around concrete beams protruding from the ceiling into the wall. I wasn't going to trust just anyone with hanging my fancy English wallpaper! After researching wallpaper installers (I asked contractors I was interviewing if they had recommendations and I also searched on Yelp), I reached out to 3 individuals (who are all highly reviewed on Yelp). One couldn't be bothered to respond directly to me; instead, she gave my phone number to another Yelp'd installer (who doesn't have very high reviews). No, thank you. Another told me that he wouldn't have time for another 2 months but if I wanted to book him, I should do it soon. He never responded to my follow-up email. Pass. Then Brian responded by asking when could he come over to look at the powder room and give me an estimate... now we're talking business! Scheduling the actual date took a couple of months because we had to wait until the mosaic wall tile had been put up and the vanity and countertop installed. Also, Brian had some work obligations that took him out of town for a couple of weeks. But when we finally settled on a date, Brian came through with flying colors! The paper was finicky (it didn't cut very easily with a razor blade) and it is dark, which means that when the paper and glue dried the next day, you could see the edge of the underlying white paper at the seams. Brian took his time to trim the paper carefully, fitting it in the smallest of places (the slice of wall between the vanity and the door casing). When he returned 2 days later to varnish the wallpaper, he also touched up the white seams with a black marker and "voila!", the white seams disappeared! I appreciate that Brian took his time to do a thorough and professional job. Having seen a range of subcontractors come in and out of my home with varying (and mostly inadequate) definitions of "finished work", I can say that the money spent on hiring Brian was well spent. Which is a good thing because the walls in the powder room are now the most expensive ones in the whole house! On a side note, Brian is a super nice and laid back guy with a very interesting and long career in the art world. I would hire him again and I would recommend him without reservation to anyone needing wallpaper hung. read more
