We bought a house and began the process of painting it, but the project spiraled out of control time wise due to the impending birth of our son. We had $600 of paint for the whole-house interior painting sitting there, and were still on the painting of just the bedrooms. Nearly the entire house by the previous owners had been done up with just stupid colors, all deeply saturated. Painting them over became a rapid nightmare. Our master bedroom was this deep, deep gray. My wife had chosen a bright pretty sunflower yellow to replace it. I had no idea, at the time, that heavily saturated paints apparently don't bond so well to each other. After three top coats of paint with primer in it, you could still see the gray popping through. It took us 1/4 of the entire time we'd left ourselves to paint 6 rooms, and two long hallways to figure out that with this kind of color combo you needed to do a dedicated coat or two of pure primer--we had no painting experience. So out of time, I ended up hiring Paint The Town and Jim Knott's crew based off of just his Yelp reviews and a couple of conversations. This was after taking several other bids. Jim agreed to also use my own paint, to save costs. A week later, the work was done. Clean, professional, gorgeous work. My wife had not (due to the end of pregnancy and birth) seen the house since the day we closed and got the keys. She went from the old horrible colors to move-in day with a new son, and LOVED the work that Jim and his expert painter Daniel put together. It came out fantastic, and was some of the best money I've ever spent in my life. The final tally for that room, by the way, turned out to be our 3 top coats of paint plus primer, a VERY heavy coat of primer, then another 2 top coats of paint plus primer. In a few spots, 3 top coat. It was crazy, but it's done, and it looks great. read more

We've hired Jim Knott and Paint The Town for a wide variety of projects in our first home (now a rental) and our new home. He helped is select the color and then pained a very bold plum wall in the living room. In the master bedroom, he did a "rag off" faux finish effect to warm the room and hid imperfections in the walls. In the guest bedroom, we accented eggshell walls with a bold tangerine accent wall to give a sunset effect. I wanted to Repaint my living room and decided to go with Stripes in three colors. Well I knew I didn't have the patience to do this so I searched for someone who did. After looking on the West Seattle blog I found "Paint the town" and their reviews were very good, so I gave him a call and told him I wanted stripes and he said "I Love painting stripes" and then I knew he was the one for the job. Who on earth has the patience to paint stripes, well He does. I knew it was going to be a lot of work and he came in and gave me a quote for a job that should take about 3 days. Well the job took 5 days and Not because he's slow but because it Really IS that much work and he wanted to Make Sure it was done right. We recently removed the aging lathe & plaster walls to add insulation to our 1917 house and put up new drywall, investing in a very smooth Level 4 finish. We had heard many tales of woe about how a sloppy paint job, whether it be from inadequate prep (new drywall needs to be vacuumed first), using nappy rollers (can create too much texture), or applying cheap paint (causes bubbles) could ruin the finish. Forewarned, we really did our research when it came time to pick a painter. Using Yelp (and another website) we investigated a painting candidate's track record on: extent of prep work done, skill at the actual painting, timely performance, adhering to the budget, and remedying any flaws in the work performed. We started with a list of 14 possible companies and narrowed it down from there. Paint the Town was one of five "finalists" we contacted for an estimate. Jim Knott returned our call promptly and scheduled a meeting within a few days. He also provided the estimate in a timely fashion. However, the estimate he provided was somewhat vague, especially with regard to the all-important prep work. The vacuuming step was omitted altogether. We couldn't tell if he forgot that it was a critical part of the process, or if he was trying to keep his bid lower by omitting it now and then planning to bill it as an additional service later when we insisted it was necessary. In addition, we noticed Mr. Knott specified a less expensive paint than his other competitors. Despite that, his estimate was the highest of the three bids we received! We were also troubled by the fact that Mr. Knott didn't raise any concerns about the paint itself. The other two companies had advised us that the paint we initially asked about (Benjamin Moore Regal Select) had been found to have smoothness issues when tested by Consumer Reports. Accordingly, one of them changed the paint to a better performer, even though it made their bid less competitive, because they realized we'd be unhappy with the end result. (They were right. We spent $7,000 on new drywall and the smooth finish. We weren't about to jeopardize it over a $600 cost difference in the paint!) So, it wasn't just amount of the bid that drove our final decision to go with another company; it was that we were no longer certain that Mr. Knott was going to be able to provide the attention to detail that our project requires. (Does ignoring the details when preparing the bid equate to ignoring the details when doing the job?) And if it does, what then? We were uncomfortable with Mr. Knott's posted response to a dissatisfied customer of his. He said that the customer "was just one of those people you can't make happy." He may well be right, but it came across as Mr. Knott having an indifferent attitude. We have worked so hard to pull our fixer-upper together that we have a lot emotionally invested in how "this old house" turns out. That means that we will be fairly picky clients. A painter who goes into a job assuming that there are clients you should just write-off, isn't going to be a good fit for us. We need someone who is unwavering in his dedication to achieving a beautiful outcome. Based on the information we have gathered so far, we are not sure that Mr. Knott is that person. read more

Tell you what: Jim Knott and Paint The Town are so good that I'm posting this review before the job is even finished. Look up "professional" in an Encyclopedia, there's a picture of Jim. His demeanor is calm, knowledgeable and self-assured because he really knows what he's doing, and he knows his company does it well. I was clueless, and Jim helped me decide colors, finishes, etc. and also pointed out things that needed doing that *didn't necessarily bump up his quote*. He really cares about leaving that job looking as good as it possibly can. Really, really nice guy who runs a top-notch contracting service. I recently used Paint the Town to paint the interior of my home. The previous owners painted the town home a horrible color and did an awful "touch up" paint job. Paint the Town did a fantastic job! Jim is responsive and respectful of your time (i.e., he shows up when he says he will). The job was done on time, within budget and the finished product is excellent. Contacted Paint The Town on a very tight schedule and short notice to have the interior of a town home we had purchsed painted. Jim assured us that he could meet our deadline and was true to his word. When inspecting the house, Jim noticed some areas that would need sanding, and suggested a few other items that would need some attention. We were thinking one coat would do the job. However after a careful and detailed explanation we went with his reccomendation of two coats and we are glad we did. Toward the end of the job his lead painter noticed some areas that were not covering properly and Jim immediately contacted us to look at the areas. His reccomendation of a third coat in specific problem areas was exactly what was needed. Jim's crew painted every area that was visible even pulling out the fridge and painting behind it. We had been planning on a low VOC which would have cost us double what Jim got it for, saved us a bunch. Through out the whole process Jim kept us informed of the progress, Jim did the prep himself, his crew was polite, neat, efficeint and did an outstading job. The clean up left the home looking as if they had never been there. We may have some accent walls done in the future and we will definitely be calling Jim Knott at Paint The Town. I reccomend, PAINT THE TOWN, to anyone looking for a proffessional painting contractor that is good for his word, responsible, courteous, and does outsanding work at a very fair price. read more
