I met Hate to Paint? at a Seattle Home Show recently and I made the decision to give my 77-year-old house a fresh look. Several other painters from the show gave me bids and I think Hate to Paint? offered the best value. It's easy to forget how much prep work there is--the crew worked at my house for 9 days to achieve this result. Hate to Paint? includes pressure washing, using special primer on the brick and on the wood door, and caulking, not to mention a free color consultation. (I just left a review for Anya Moller Color Design, who came up with these colors.) The team was painstaking, careful, hard workers and I think the results speak for themselves. We didn't discuss everything beforehand, like whether the subterranean basement door was included, but it seemed that everything was included, however I wanted to approach things--for 9 days, they were my painters, with zero surprises on the final bill. To review the overall work, I have to say the paint job, the consistency of the project, and getting everything completed quickly was excellent. We appreciated the team that Una ran to ensure the project was completed with accuracy. Where things went incredibly south was with Chris who does the bids, communication, and payments. I asked for an estimate that included our house, siding replacement, and shed. The original estimate seemed incredibly high and instead of getting another bid, Chris negotiated with us to bring the overall cost down. We asked for siding to be replaced as well as our shed roof to be fixed which we had understood as carpentry. The total cost of the estimated project seemed more responsible once we discussed further and we started the project. Half way through the project Una let us know that the siding was going to cost a few hundred dollars more which we were ok with to get the work done. During the project we never received a revised estimate, nor did we receive any written communication of the revised total cost. We didn't think much of it and then when the project completed we received an invoice $3500 more than our original agreement. I asked both Una and Chris to fix the invoice and to include the initial down payment we gave them before starting the project which was not included in the final invoice statement. Instead of changing to the price we agreed on, was given a run around story about why we were charged so much more and charge the same price as the original bid. But they did include the down payment to the invoice. I was incredibly frustrated by the lack of communication and transparency given to the increased project cost. And instead was just given the final project payment through an invoice vs having a conversation before moving forward. It is also important to note that we finished this project on a Saturday, and I have asked Chris and Una for more transparency around the increased costs and material costs that caused this. On Wednesday (3 days later) I am now being sent aggressive texts from Chris demanding payment after not giving me a clear response. I would not recommend this business due to the unprofessional communication and client services that we have received and would have used another painting service if we had known that we would have been unexpectedly charged $2500 more along with the incredibly unprofessional texts and communication we have received by just asking for clarity. read more

I needed someone to repaint my entire house on fairly short notice. I was actually referred to Hate to Paint from another painting company that didn't have time to schedule new projects. We were thinking of getting our house on the market to sell and were going to need to get some painting done to make it picture-ready. The schedule we needed to be on to get this stuff done was also very tight. Our real estate agent recommended Hate to Paint. Chris got back to us very quickly and set up a time to get a quote done. Chris came out a few days later, and the quote we got was very reasonable. And even though the team was very busy in this crazy home improvement and real estate market we've got going on right now, Chris was ready to get us in to their work schedule ASAP In the end we decided not to put our house on the market right now so we ended up not needing the painting work done at this time. But I was really impressed by HtP's responsiveness and timeliness. Chris was great at communicating and always responded quickly. That level of responsiveness and ability to accommodate rapid requests is really rare among home contractors, so this makes HtP a real standout. We hired interior painters twice this year, for the house we sold and then for the house we bought a few months later. On our first project Hate to Paint's bid was thorough, detailed, and priced competitively but we went with another company anyway. Big mistake on our part. The other company left our home a total mess after they were "finished" with the job and ran two days behind their promised schedule. Fast forward to us buying our new house and Hate to Paint was the only painter we called for an estimate. Pricing was what we expected, they were able to work with our tight scheduling time frame to get us on the books, and our house was IMMACULATE when they were finished with the job. A coworker recommended Hate to Paint to us. We were looking to repaint the interiors of a house before we moved in so we were on somewhat of a timeline. We called another company who wouldn't even consider interior painting until the rain started (a few months away) and Chris was able to come meet us for a quote in a few days and then slot us into a sudden cancellation and so it was all done, bid + job, within a week's time. I had painted some test swatches on parts of the trim that looked factory finished, and they fixed it up so well you can't tell where I had messed it up in the first place!
