We went to a celebratory re-opening dinner at Lynn Shanghai restaurant in the Castlereagh club in the heart of Sydney city. The restaurant has plenty of seating and accomodated this large group of foodies with ease. The kitchen is open, allowing you to watch the chef's in action making dumplings from scratch. To celebrate the re-opening, we experienced a banquet of epic proportions. To start, we had china chilli bean jelly, thick noodles with a huge flavour kick and not too hot, with szechuan peppers which gave the dish a tangy flavour which sometimes described as numb. We loved the peking duck spring rolls and could have easily devoured many of these, if not for the feast ahead. Next up was the mixed dim sum platter with an assortment of dumplings, little pillows of goodness. We love dumplings and there were no exceptions here. The platter included scallop and pork dumplings, amber prawn dumplings, steamed mushroom dumplings and something different the steamed fish and pumpkin dumplings. Lynn also does a decent xiao long bao(steamed pork dumpling) another favourite bring the pan fried pork dumplings. Next up, what can be described as a Chinese version of the taco, which consisted of a baked sesame pocket that we filled with chicken and pine nuts. The boiled fish in hot chilli oil, was a beautifully fragrant dish that may look a little daunting if you aren't into spicy. Thankfully looks were deceiving and the dish not as hot as the name would suggest. The lamb chops with cumin and pepper may be a little fatty, but seriously flavoursome and more-ish, as was the szechuan style fried chilli chicken which drew comparison to popcorn chicken. For dessert, cloud like sweet buns. The red bean and banana, a different flavour combination that worked. Most impressive was the sweet salted custard buns which were made to look like mushrooms, really cool. The video we took tearing them apart with the custard oozing out was very popular on Instagram. Thanks to Lynn restaurant for their hospitality. We had a fun experience, the food was enjoyable with plenty of spice, the buns and dumplings were quality too.

    Seafood Soup ($12.80)

I had Din Tai Fung for lunch and when I decided that I wanted more dumplings for dinner (because they are THAT good), it was closed already. I was staying down the street from here and was pleased to find that they opened till 10 pm. I ordered the xai long bao (8 pieces) for $8.80 - cheaper than Din Tai Fung's 4 for $5.80. They were hot, fresh, and the skin was thin and chewy. I didn't think the filling was quite as good as Din Tai Fung's - it seemed a little grittier and the flavor was a bit strong. Sorry, but I'll have to stick with Din Tai Fung. I did really like the seafood soup that I ordered - it was reasonably priced at $12.80, and had a ton of fresh seafood & vegetables. Loved the big pieces of white fish, shrimp that didn't seem like they pulled it from the freezer, bok choy, and sugar snap peas. It came with a clearish, light broth that was tasty without being overly salted, and a decent amount of noodles. I would highly recommend this soup if you're looking for something on the lighter side and like seafood and vegetables. I'd get this again. I ate half of all the food I ate, and my meal cost me roughly $25 - I think I could have easily shared this with one other person, which would have been very reasonably priced in a city like Sydney. I prefer the dumplings from Din Tai Fung, but would still come back here and recommend it to others.

Absolute dumpling delight!! I can't help but to over order every time I go. The szechuan chilli chicken is also a true favorite. For veggies, you must try the snow pea shoots with king mudhrooms. Sounds simple but don't be fooled as they're quite addictive. Do leave room for dessert. The panda cakes are cute and delicious but the toffee fruit is a must at least once if not twice. The bronze banquet was extremely generous. I thought the food would never stop coming. Teresa is a wonderful host and always make you welcome.

    Best Shanghai pork buns.

Really really good food, loved the dumplings, the water spinach and especially the huge (and not expensive) spicy fish bowl!

You don't really expect much walking through the lobby of the RSL and the dining area although large and bright is quite sparse.

Can't disagree with him... ~ Elderflower Gin & Tonic - 4/5 A good balance of Gin and Tonic. Not strong, just refreshing. ~ CR06. Peking Duck Roti - 4/5 Shredded Peking duck with cucumber, hoisin sauce rolledinside a flaky Chinese roti. Tasty, good flavor...probably because of the Hoisin sauce. This is more like a fusion dish. ~ DS04. Chicken Shui Mai - 4/5 Chicken and prawn shui mai topped with tobiko. Standard Shui Mai, done correctly, very good but not outstanding. ~ HN01. Fried Spinach Noodle w/ Seafood - 5/5 Handmade spinach noodles wok fried with prawns, mussels in shell, calamari, julienned carrots and fresh shiitake mushrooms. AMAZING!!! Those Spinach noodles...I would come here just for those! Delish! Can't say I had Spinach noodles this good before...My new benchmark! ~ HN07. Beef Brisket Noodle - 4.5/5 Handmade noodles served with slow cooked beef brisket and minced beef with diced fresh chilli. So much flavor, love the sauce! Once again...those noodles! This was probably a fantastic dish, but just got out shined by the Spinach Noodles. ~ MD04. Lychee & Mint Duck - 5/5 Our most popular roast duck with lychees served in a light mint and chilli plum sauce (half duck). I thought this sounded strange and didn't know what to expect...sooo glad I tried it! The flavor profile was just amazing. I thought the Lychee and plum would have mad the dish too sweet, but nope! That sauce is one of the best and most creative things I tasted. There is a Gluten Free option available as well! ~ MD09. Diced Salt & Pepper Wagyu Beef - 4/5 Flash fried, medium wagyu beef served in bite sizes with crushed black pepper and a black pepper dipping sauce. Brilliant Beef dish! Love it!! Even though Chefs Gallery is a fairly large venue, it's a popular spot and fills up fast. There were some dishes I didn't even get a chance to take a pic off. I would gladly return here. Honestly there wasn't a single dish here any of us detested or passed on...

Our waitress was a super disappointed we came in right at opening: 9am and was muttering how inconvenient it was we decided to eat so early to her coworker in Cantonese not knowing we could understand her. We are used to big crowds and long lines by opening at our dim sum places so we came in early to beat the crowd. Kitchen took almost 45 mins to prepare our beef noodles and it was a total disappointment. Kitchen is super slow and did not have anything other than a few items by opening. We wanted egg custard to finish our meal and was informed it would take another hour before they would be ready. I guess things are cooked fresh on the day which is good but shouldn't it all be ready by the time you open? The little old ladies pushing the cart were very nice and polite. Ambiance is your typical big city Chinese place.

Came Sunday at 9:30, already a quarter full. I had har- gow, chicken feet, trip, lotus leaf sticky rice (lo mai gai). The chicken feet were perfect and the har-gow full and plumb with shrimp. I like the way they do the lo mai gai. Smaller portions, devided between 3 wrappers instead of the usual 2. So you get more filling to rice ratio. Plus they wrap the race in parchment paper before wrapping in the lotus leaf, so it's much easier to peel apart. The trip was a little disappointing however. The flavor was very good but good, but should have been cooked a bit longer, as some of the pieces were still quite chewy. I patiently waited for the egg custard to come out, as they were still baking them. Worth the wait, they were perfect! Light flaky crust, and perfectly light and tender egg custard. Plus, they were the "normal" palm size tart...not those mini ones, that many places switched to, to save money. Honestly, these were the best I have had anywhere! As I was leaving at 10:45, the place was buzzing and almost full. They were also bringing out many more items, such as stuffed bell pepper (with shrimp) and stuffed egg plant (with pork). They also had special carts that would make stir fry noodles or steamed vegy at your table. Makes it feel like Hong Kong, which was the last place I saw these, in the early '90s.
