On a recent visit to Bend and fresh off an early morning flight, the first thing I craved was excellent coffee. This spot popped up and lived up to reviews. It's such a cute little spot, in what seems like an old home. The high ceilings just add to the coziness with greens and local art. They have indoor and outdoor seating as well. The coffee bar was staffed with friendly people. I had a giant jar of black iced cold brew, my favorite on a cool but sunny day. Prices are reasonable. They have a restroom, WiFi, and outlooks and seemed many were enjoying using it as an office. read more

Jodi & Jack were awesome. Got a matcha for Lala with almond milk since they don't have oat milk & a flat white. She enjoyed it. The service was quick & the inside decor looks like you're walking straight into an episode of the Gilmore girls. What a cute spot, filled with tons of crystals that people have randomly left and gifted to the store. Kylie is very particular with coffee and she loves it. I've been going here since I moved from New Orleans 7months ago and it's been good. I love the atmosphere and people. Today must have been an off day and there was a large crowd. I waited a bit and they called an order and it was wrong so instead of fixing it they added additional syrup to my beverage instead of giving me the correct one. Palate is a really cool coffee shop with seating both inside and out. I only stopped in to get coffee and a pastry to-go but I could see why people would come here and hang out. The staff was really friendly and the overall shop was really cute. I ordered an iced americano and a pastry and my husband ordered an iced latte. We both enjoyed what we ordered and would have loved to stay and relax. There was a lot of seating inside and outside of the shop. I'd recommend stopping in to check it out! read more

I wish I could leave 5 stars, as I have visited Palate several times when staying in a nearby bed and breakfast. However, today I was very disappointed with what I witnessed between the barista and another customer (who seemed to be a local). I waited in line behind the couple, one of which brought in her own mug. I saw the woman taking orders add the vanilla syrup to the mug and pass to the barista. As I was finishing getting my drink, the gentleman brought the mug up and asked the barista if he could have a little vanilla over the top...only to be told, in a very unfriendly way, that it would be an extra charge and pointed to the side bar for simple syrup. There was a long line and the man was clearly not happy. I am a small business owner myself. I own a very well known food truck and occasionally a customer will ask for extra something or something after the fact and I would NEVER treat a customer like that knowing that that kind of comment paired with a less than friendly attitude, could not only cost me that person's business, but the others that witnessed it. I know that I will not be giving my business here again due the this experience. Is $.50 really worth it? read more

If you are looking for an early morning espresso on a Sunday, Palate is a solid option. I was looking to grab a coffee before taking a roadtrip to Crater Lake, and there aren't that many coffee shops open early on Sundays in Bend. I headed over to Palate and was the first customer in the door. One of the owners actually used to work with Matt Higgins as a barista, and the shop now features Matt's beans, Coava coffee. I saw the owner calibrating the espresso when I arrived, i.e. weighing a shot to make sure that everything was in spec. I spoke with the owner at length and had a great conversation with her about her history and things to do in the area. Like the Coava stores I visited in Portland, I found that the espresso was very flavorful but that you get very little of it for the money ($3 for a demitasse). I did like that Palate serves Ocean Rolls - because of the opening hours of Sparrow Bakery on Sunday, I would not have been able to try one of these delicious sticky cardamom rolls had I not come here! Overall, I was pretty happy with my experience here and I would recommend it if you need an early shot! read more

The coffee here is a level above. Not sure how they do it but lattes here are some of the best I've had. The baked treats are great too. The menu is limited so there aren't a ton of kid options but they do have a case of smoothies and the baristas are always friendly and fun. "Yes, I think so too", he said. "Palate has only been open two weeks and it is already my favorite coffee house in Bend." That was the response of the guy waiting at the counter for his beverage with a friend who said "What a cool place." My hubby and I were seated at a table nearby sipping a great mocha (12 oz = $4) and nibbling on a piece of Sparrow banana bread and we had could see why he was a fan. Us too. Noting our very favorite coffee house in the area is Tumalo Coffeehouse which is outside city limits, Palate may be our new inside city limits fav. As much as we'd like to keep this special place that is Palate our little secret, we know it is good for the business and customers both to share. Here goes. UNIQUE LOCATION Palate is in the old house that was once home to Maragas Winery's tasting room and Taverna. At the cusp between Bend's Old Mill District and downtown on the corner of Bond Street and Colorado, this is a great location, even if parking is a bit tough to come by. BEVERAGES AND NOSH The format, for now at least,is coffee beverages, steamer cocoa, tea and juices. (I hear they also serve beer and wine but I forgot to check.) Eats are Sparrow bakery goodies including things like croissant, banana bread, ocean rolls and sea salt bagels. Coffee used is Portland's excellent Stumptown. Prices are competitive with other Bend coffee houses. The owner /operators, Jason and Jodi, came to Bend from Portland where they worked for Stumptown. So they know good coffee and coffee beverages. Very nice. They may want to add some other eats things over time, but they'll figure out what it is their market wants. (My hint: Sparrow or Village Baker baguette with great butter and local jam and the ginger bar cookies from Baked. :-).) INVITING AMBIANCE Jason and Jodi made the old house that now houses Palate, which was a few years ago updated by the Maragas' winery folks when they owned it, even better. They removed the rickity upstairs loft opening up the horizontal space to expose some of the original rafters at center and the once dark space is now flooded with light. They removed three or four layers of added flooring to expose the original hundred year old wood floors. They trimmed out the walls with corrugated metal and rough sawn siding which honors the old logging Mill location of the house. Cool ambiance is also extended through pitch perfect for format and sound level coffee house music mix and rustic tables with comfortable chairs, all at standard table height thank goodness...none of those high perch bar height tables and stools here, with ample room between them to allow a sense of comfortable space for conversation. Delightful. Level in through the door and throughout, standard height seating, his is an "all people are welcome here" place. One of my favorite things in the space was a very neat old amber glass light fixture hanging at mid room. I asked Jason where he sourced it from and he said a second hand store in Portland. I also asked if he or Jody were design professionals since the space seemed so perfectly "ahhhh....some" when one walked in and when dissecting the pieces you could see that was no accident. Turns out that Jason is also an artist. THIS N THAT: PARKING: Parking is a bear in this area but there is a little lot with a few parking spaces, including a van accessible parking space for those needing ADA compliant parking, behind Palate. More parking on street. Or park in the lot adjacent to Strictly Organic coffee and Gairdin down the street and walk up a block to Palate. HOURS: 6 a.m.-5 p.m., Mon.-Fri.; 7 a.m.-5 p.m., Sat.-Sun (I think.) OUTDOOR SEATING: Come warmer weather the little paver patio in front will have outdoor seating. read more

Lovely joint, not overly crowded for a Sunday morning. Friendly staff. I had a sugar free oat milk latte that was almost perfect. They use pacific milk and I prefer Oatly. I also tried an oat Chai that had a kick but overly sweet for my tastebuds. In the back there is a vegan food truck so food is available. I worked from here for a couple Hours while visiting from out of town and had 2 iced lattes back to back (it was that kind of day). It was delicious! The prices are similar to San Francisco. They have long benches and long/large tables that could seat 8 for you to hang out and work. I like it because there's more room for you to spread out if it's not crowded. Fall here is perfection! While visiting Bend I wanted to try this place because of all their vegan food options. When I arrived and noticed just the small case of pastries and lack of menu, I asked the young woman behind the counter if they had other food to which she simply said "no." So we ordered some coffee, which was amazing, and a pretty solid croissant and called it good. While I waited for our drinks the older barista informed me that they DID in fact have more food, it was just in the food cart out back, but that the meals from there can be enjoyed inside. So that was a bit of a bummer and bad on the first employees part. However, I cannot complain too much because this place was very cozy. Great walkable location and cute comfy inside. Due to their poor hospitality I'm sorry to say I'll never be back. There was a problem with my drink, it was so watery it just tasted like hot water with a splash of cream. It was almost clear and colorless like water too. I tried to show the staff but they weren't interested in looking at it and explained to me (condescendingly) several times that they had made it perfectly. I tried to explain that I'd ordered it in the past and this time there was a problem, this drink wasn't anything like normal, but they wouldn't listen or look at the drink. In the end they took the drink back, kept my money (+tip) and didn't make me anything I could drink. read more
