Cafe des Chutes is one of my proudest finds in Bend! This cafe is so good that we visited twice during our stay. Cafe des Chutes is a cute, European-style cafe that invites you to slow day and enjoy a pastry and coffee on their patio. During each visit, we ordered coffee and at least two items to try a little bit of everyone. I loved that they were offering samples on both days that we went - one day was the Oregon roll and the other was their specialty bread pudding. I was sold on the Oregon Roll! This is their speciality, rolls up marionberry jam inside a croissant with a hazelnut butter glaze. Other items we ordered included the pistachio croissant, peanut butter brownie, Brie and fig jam baguette, jalepeno cheddar scone, and seasonal bread pudding. Everything was a chef's kiss! You can't go wrong here. Be prepared to drop a bag you won't regret. We spent at least $50 during each visit but we were satisfied with our selection. I still dream of this spot and highly recommend for anyone looking for a good cafe outside of downtown Bend! read more

Cafe des Chutes is a lovely spot with outdoor seating near several small stores and an artist space. The cafe itself is very small so plan to sit outside if you're dining in. We came here for a weekend lunch, ordered baguette sandwiches, coffees, and a hazelnut cookie. All were delicious and they had lots to choose from! We enjoyed walking around afterwards, as the area is perfect for a small outing and shopping. Lots of available free parking as well. We'll be back! read more

I heard from everyone to try an Ocean Roll from Sparrow, but I've had Scandinavian cardamon based treats before and I know I don't enjoy that flavor profile. I looked around for something similar, but less the cardamon and came across Cafe des Chutes. We visited at 9 am on a Sunday and it wasn't too crowded at all, with only a single person ahead. They have plenty of seating and I think most people decide to eat their treats in the cafe; we had to hit the trail though, so we got ours to go to eat while hiking. Mango Sticky Rice Honey Glazed Croissant ($6.25) - Woah, this is an exceptionally sticky pastry, so sticky it's actually a little cumbersome to eat since the glaze spreads on any surface it touches and becomes very difficult to remove. The glaze tastes just like fresh honey - in fact, I wouldn't be surprised if it were mostly honey. There's not much mango flavor until closer to the center, along with another flavor of something very fragrant almost flowery They sprinkle coconut flakes on top, giving a somewhat fruity flavor. The croissant itself is very good - great crust, nicely flaky and crisp with a great texture on the interior, chewy and airy. The lamination seems to be good based on a cursory inspection, but I didn't have a sharp bread knife on me for a clean cut as I usually do. The pastry is very sweet and the glaze covers up the flavor of the croissant entirely. (5/5) Oregon Roll ($6.25) - This base, on the other hand, is really buttery, combining the great lamination, crispy and flaky, with great flavor. There's a fantastic honeycomb texture on the inside combined with the perfect chewiness. They do add a marionberry swirl on the interior, which is pretty obviously included in terms of color, but can't really be tasted on top of the croissant butteriness. On top, they spread a spiced hazelnut glaze, sweet and nutty, almost like peanut butter in texture mixed with butter. Delicious pastry overall. (5/5) Savory Bread Pudding ($10) - This is a super dense and heavy (in weight) bread pudding baked in a muffin mold. They offer to heat it up and it's a really good idea to eat this warmed. We opted to get it cold since we weren't going to eat it for a couple of hours (for a picnic lunch) and it basically wasn't edible, with super dense, bitter and stale tasting bread, making it hard to even stick a fork into the top. We ended up waiting until we got to the hotel room to heat it up the next morning for breakfast, which made it much more palatable. There's some mushroom essence with tons of black pepper and a dense yet pleasingly chewy bread. Cheese is baked on top and there's a little vegetal bitterness from spinach. Not rating this since we ate it the next day. Overall I enjoyed my treats from Cafe des Chutes. I would visit again the next time I'm in Bend. Bathrooms - Tiny room near the front. This cafe was my kinda vibe! I loved the selection of fresh pastries and gluten free options. I was in line alone, I was wishing I had a few people with me so we could family style and try it all!!! Staff were super friendly and helpful - I visited on a busy Friday morning. I ordered: * almond milk flat white (5/5) * Oregon roll (2/5) the hazelnut maple glaze was misleading and tasted more like a miso glaze * hazelnut chocolate chip cookie (7/5) so good * ham and cheese croissant (4/5) ate cold, needs to be warm * lemon blueberry buckwheat muffin (5/5) moist, flavorful and fat juicy blueberries * mulberry Bundt cake (3/5) was just ok They had a mango sticky rice croissant for goodness sakes!!!! I contemplated ordering and wish I did... There's lovely outdoor seating and a small mercantile of craft and local makers. The inside is small but there is some indoor seating. Ambiance: 10/10 so quant and cute in there. Fantastic spot for a coffee date or place to hang out with friends. Very unique design, layout and feel. Very homey. I would come back just for the atmosphere. But it helps the food and coffee were good! Service: 6/10 good Food 7.5/10 Sandwich: 9/10 my wife rated this as I don't like these ingredients but the bread dill, smoked fish, radishes, were very fresh tasting, light, and unique. Would highly recommend if you like these flavor profiles Oregon Bun: 7/10 think PB&J croissant. Hazelnut butter was mildly nutty and buttery while the marionberry croissant was buttery, acidic when you get the berry and crispy. I enjoyed it a lot! Coffee: 8/10 my wife really loved her coffee. Bread pudding: 7/10 think dense French toast muffin. The drizzle of caramel or whatever that was overtop was UNREAL. Coupled with the butter which was fatty and sweet and salty it was delicious. This is a VERY dense dish. I would have preferred it would be cut up into 1/4s or 1/8s because I would have wanted more of the drizzle on each bite because those bites were superb. Got here right when they openend at 8am. Their special today was a French toast croissant with sliced banana, hazelnut syrup and hazelnut crumbles, whipped cream. (I asked for it on the side). It was delicious and very filling. We also had the Oregon Roll: croissant roll with Marionberry filling and hazelnut cream on top. I found this to be too sweet and sticky, enjoyable but just too much cream and jam. We tried the pistachio croissant as well: disappointing for a $7 pastry which is basically a (overbaked) croissant sliced in half, pistachio frangipane which did not have much taste, and topped with pistachios and powdered sugar. The consistency of the croissant was too dense and a bit overbaked. The frangipane was thick, could be more fluid and piped into the croissant instead of spread on the halved sides. I know... I am picky when it comes to French pastries.... The coffees were delicious and the service good. The place has some tables inside in the back as well as at the counter in the front. Overall, nice experience. Same place where the original Sparrow bakery was located years ago. read more

I absolutely love this place! Whenever I come through Bend, stopping here is a must. The service is always friendly and the pastries are consistently delicious. On this visit, I took a recommendation to get the artichoke veggie sandwich and add prosciutto to it. Oh my goodness, it was so incredibly delicious and totally hit the spot for the rest of my drive! We stopped there for the pastries (bakery). Although they didn't have a wide selection, what they had tasted great. We had the Pistachio Croissant ($6.00), the Chocolate Croissant ($5.50) and I believe a daily special Lemon flavored glazed cinnamon roll ($5.00), They all tasted great and we would have them again. The issue was we ordered three pastries but got charged for four pastries. I only saw this after I requested a copy of the receipt. I brought this to their attention and they did credit me for the $5 for the extra pastry. Hopefully this was an honest mistake and not an intentional effort to over charge. read more

This place has amazing reviews on Yelp so we were excited to try it. Inside this place is tiny! No seating, just a counter to order. If you have 10 people in line it is crowded! People have to line up and wait outside the door. After we entered someone yelled to keep the door closed. It took about 15 minutes to get to the counter to order. The counter is not very big. The pastries looked very good. I read reviews about their Jambon Beurre sandwich. So we ordered a few things including a latte, pastries, breakfast sandwich and the sandwich. There is a nice outside seating that looks a little European. Unfortunately, it was hot. We found a table that was partially shaded. We got our own silverware and waters and waited for our beeper to go off. It took around 10 minutes to get our order. The latte was very good. The pastries were good but nothing like I was hoping based on the reviews. My husband's breakfast sandwich was nothing special. I think it was around $10. The real disappointment was my sandwich which people had commented was amazing. It really didn't have much in it, a creamy French butter, a thin piece of ham and some pepper. All for the price of $12.50! Sorry, I guess I might be in the minority by saying it was lacking. For that price there is another amazing breakfast place in Bend I would have rather gone to again which has amazing reviews and we have gone to a few times. I wanted to see if there was another amazing place in Bend we hadn't tried but again this place was not it. It's not a place I would probably come back too. What a nice place! Came here once before had had the jambon-beurre sandwich and it was so good. This time visiting Bend, I had to come back and get another one of those amazing sandwiches, but unfortunately they were out of the prepped sandwich I had came for. So I decided to leave and just come back maybe a different day. The lady at the front was so nice and came out as I was walking to my car and offered to make another one for me since I had came all the way down here. She went above and beyond my expectations and that was so thoughtful especially since I came 15 minutes before closing. Got to enjoy a nice lunch in the sun on the calm relaxing patio. You know those quaint little cafés tucked away in small towns in France--where there are only one or two people working, the line moves slowly, but you don't mind because it's part of the charm and the food is always worth it? Well, imagine multiplying that wait time by 10 and cutting the food and coffee quality by the same factor--that's Café de Chutes. The service system here is truly frustrating. To be fair, the food and drinks were solid, and the space has a cozy, inviting vibe. But the wait times were aggravating. I've worked in the service industry for over a decade, and I'm always patient and empathetic toward staff, especially when things get busy. But the operational setup here needs serious improvement. We waited over 30 minutes just to order a coffee and pastry. Once we finally made it inside, it became clear why: after every single transaction, the cashier would walk away for a couple of minutes--chatting with staff or handling who-knows-what--then return, repeat the coffee order four times, and then finally move on to the next guest. Not a lot of seating space, but the back room has a few tables that can seat 4 and other smaller tables for 2. Got to Des Chutes early enough on a Thursday to avoid the crush some other reviewers complain about. Staff made extra effort to pack some raw sugar (no packets here) in a small container at my request for family back at the hotel. Espresso drinks (beautiful La Marzocco machine) were excellent. Pastries were gorgeous although not quite as nuanced as the French bakeries we love. No big deal at all--still very good. Great barista made an error in one of our drinks and caught it (I had no idea), then gave us the extra drink on the house. Just great service all around. read more

It sounded cute enough and that's why my husband sent me here. I'm not a pastry person, generally speaking. It's a small place, I walked in and with 4 in women front of me I was standing at the door until they finished their orders. I noticed the prices were steep, just like everything else in Bend. I ordered my husbands French Toast "muffin"-$12.95; Oregon Roll for me- $6.95, and a small cup of dark chocolate mocha coffee (8 ounces)-$5. The coffee comes out on the right side, the meals that need to be heated; to the left. They did have plenty of seats to wait there for your order- which was handy because it was 20 minutes for my order to be complete. They have a metal bookshelf for the coffee fixings, which doesn't fit the french look they might have been going for here. Got everything home. I have no idea how to describe the Oregon bun- but I took two bites and threw it out. I usually like cinnamon rolls, so maybe that's my issue with this (I'm not cultured enough lol) - just a strange messy icing that isn't sweet and to me tasted sour or bad. The husbands "muffin" was this flat, pressed pastry with whipped creme, some sort of sweet sauce, and doused in bananas. He said it was ok but too many bananas, - so I had some-these were good. The coffee wasn't bad, not too sweet. I don't think it's pretentious-trying to be a french cafe or something like that- just think their restaurant setup is not the best, food is pricey, and to us, it wasn't good. read more

You can walk into the smaller area for a more private experience or walk into the open area for a more communal atmosphere. The people here are nice, I'm definitely recommending this place. Came in for a quick breakfast before hitting the road. The servers were nice at the counter. The ambiance was very cute. The tables on the outdoor patio were in a shaded area, which is great for summer. The pastries were a little lackluster in flavor and warmth, but anything with sugar usually tastes good. The coffee didn't quite hit the spot for me, but I tend to like mine on the sweeter side. This place is great for an esthetic breakfast, but if you're looking for something more substantial, this may not be the spot for you. read more

The cafe's ambiance is pretty bare bones but the friendly and prompt service made me feel welcome. You order at the counter and they bring your food to you on real glassware! Amusingly, there's a sign in the tiny restroom that reminds patrons that the building is over a hundred years old, with equally delicate centenarian plumbing. I tried the following things over the course of two consecutive days: smoked trout baguette (sophisticated and satisfying), pistachio croissant (crisply, flaky, and a lovely filling in a truly-French style), pain-au-chocolat (classic if a little breadlike), and Oregon Roll (essentially a peanut-butter & jam offering). The first two were sufficiently good to warrant a return visit. Authentic French pastries are rare-enough in Bend that I'll be back to see what other flaky pastries they come up with! read more

The person with the origami crab tattoo along with her sidekick were so warm and welcoming from the get go. The cafe is beautifully cozy and the outdoor area is spacious, peaceful and relaxing. Food is always really good. But the service this time was awful. You could hear the lady in the back being rude to the staff and then coffee barista someone found a car key that nobody claimed for over 15minutes and was trying to make sure no one stole it and walked to the barista she told her about the key and then the lady was like "set it down on the counter " in a super snarky tone and then she set it down and the lady grabbed it didn't say anything and slammed it next to her. The poor girl taking orders was trying really hard and everyone around her was ina crappy mood. It was really unfortunate. read more

They took over from sparrow and are able to offer fresh Ocean Rolls in addition to their own creations. Have tried several of fresh baked goods and found each one uniquely flavored with perfectly selected combination of ingredients. In addition they offer a great variety of gluten free options that raise the bar on quality, taste and texture Add to the great bakery option I love their chai which starts out as a powder and delicately mixed with milk of choice.
