I absolutely love this place! Whenever I come through Bend, stopping here is a must. The service is always friendly and the pastries are consistently delicious. On this visit, I took a recommendation to get the artichoke veggie sandwich and add prosciutto to it. Oh my goodness, it was so incredibly delicious and totally hit the spot for the rest of my drive! I heard from everyone to try an Ocean Roll from Sparrow, but I've had Scandinavian cardamon based treats before and I know I don't enjoy that flavor profile. I looked around for something similar, but less the cardamon and came across Cafe des Chutes. We visited at 9 am on a Sunday and it wasn't too crowded at all, with only a single person ahead. They have plenty of seating and I think most people decide to eat their treats in the cafe; we had to hit the trail though, so we got ours to go to eat while hiking. Mango Sticky Rice Honey Glazed Croissant ($6.25) - Woah, this is an exceptionally sticky pastry, so sticky it's actually a little cumbersome to eat since the glaze spreads on any surface it touches and becomes very difficult to remove. The glaze tastes just like fresh honey - in fact, I wouldn't be surprised if it were mostly honey. There's not much mango flavor until closer to the center, along with another flavor of something very fragrant almost flowery They sprinkle coconut flakes on top, giving a somewhat fruity flavor. The croissant itself is very good - great crust, nicely flaky and crisp with a great texture on the interior, chewy and airy. The lamination seems to be good based on a cursory inspection, but I didn't have a sharp bread knife on me for a clean cut as I usually do. The pastry is very sweet and the glaze covers up the flavor of the croissant entirely. (5/5) Oregon Roll ($6.25) - This base, on the other hand, is really buttery, combining the great lamination, crispy and flaky, with great flavor. There's a fantastic honeycomb texture on the inside combined with the perfect chewiness. They do add a marionberry swirl on the interior, which is pretty obviously included in terms of color, but can't really be tasted on top of the croissant butteriness. On top, they spread a spiced hazelnut glaze, sweet and nutty, almost like peanut butter in texture mixed with butter. Delicious pastry overall. (5/5) Savory Bread Pudding ($10) - This is a super dense and heavy (in weight) bread pudding baked in a muffin mold. They offer to heat it up and it's a really good idea to eat this warmed. We opted to get it cold since we weren't going to eat it for a couple of hours (for a picnic lunch) and it basically wasn't edible, with super dense, bitter and stale tasting bread, making it hard to even stick a fork into the top. We ended up waiting until we got to the hotel room to heat it up the next morning for breakfast, which made it much more palatable. There's some mushroom essence with tons of black pepper and a dense yet pleasingly chewy bread. Cheese is baked on top and there's a little vegetal bitterness from spinach. Not rating this since we ate it the next day. Overall I enjoyed my treats from Cafe des Chutes. I would visit again the next time I'm in Bend. [[HIGHLIGHT]]Bathrooms - Tiny room near the front. Got here right when they openend at 8am. Their special today was a French toast croissant with sliced banana, hazelnut syrup and hazelnut crumbles, whipped cream. (I asked for it on the side). It was delicious and very filling. We also had the Oregon Roll: croissant roll with Marionberry filling and hazelnut cream on top. I found this to be too sweet and sticky, enjoyable but just too much cream and jam. We tried the pistachio croissant as well: disappointing for a $7 pastry which is basically a (overbaked) croissant sliced in half, pistachio frangipane which did not have much taste, and topped with pistachios and powdered sugar. The consistency of the croissant was too dense and a bit overbaked. The frangipane was thick, could be more fluid and piped into the croissant instead of spread on the halved sides. I know... I am picky when it comes to French pastries.... The coffees were delicious and the service good. Bread pudding: 7/10 think dense French toast muffin. The drizzle of caramel or whatever that was overtop was UNREAL. Coupled with the butter which was fatty and sweet and salty it was delicious. This is a VERY dense dish. I would have preferred it would be cut up into 1/4s or 1/8s because I would have wanted more of the drizzle on each bite because those bites were superb. We stopped there for the pastries (bakery). Although they didn't have a wide selection, what they had tasted great. We had the Pistachio Croissant ($6.00), the Chocolate Croissant ($5.50) and I believe a daily special Lemon flavored glazed cinnamon roll ($5.00), They all tasted great and we would have them again. The issue was we ordered three pastries but got charged for four pastries. I only saw this after I requested a copy of the receipt. I brought this to their attention and they did credit me for the $5 for the extra pastry. Hopefully this was an honest mistake and not an intentional effort to over charge. read more

The pastries looked very good. I read reviews about their Jambon Beurre sandwich. So we ordered a few things including a latte, pastries, breakfast sandwich and the sandwich. [[HIGHLIGHT]]There is a nice outside seating that looks a little European.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] [[HIGHLIGHT]]Unfortunately, it was hot. We found a table that was partially shaded.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] We got our own silverware and waters and waited for our beeper to go off. It took around 10 minutes to get our order. The latte was very good. The pastries were good but nothing like I was hoping based on the reviews. My husband's breakfast sandwich was nothing special. I think it was around $10. The real disappointment was my sandwich which people had commented was amazing. It really didn't have much in it, a creamy French butter, a thin piece of ham and some pepper. All for the price of $12.50! Sorry, I guess I might be in the minority by saying it was lacking. For that price there is another amazing breakfast place in Bend I would have rather gone to again which has amazing reviews and we have gone to a few times. Got to Des Chutes early enough on a Thursday to avoid the crush some other reviewers complain about. Staff made extra effort to pack some raw sugar (no packets here) in a small container at my request for family back at the hotel. Espresso drinks (beautiful La Marzocco machine) were excellent. Pastries were gorgeous although not quite as nuanced as the French bakeries we love. No big deal at all--still very good. I ordered my husbands French Toast "muffin"-$12.95; Oregon Roll for me- $6.95, and a small cup of dark chocolate mocha coffee (8 ounces)-$5. The coffee comes out on the right side, the meals that need to be heated; to the left. They did have plenty of seats to wait there for your order- which was handy because it was 20 minutes for my order to be complete. The cafe's ambiance is pretty bare bones but the friendly and prompt service made me feel welcome. You order at the counter and they bring your food to you on real glassware! Amusingly, there's a sign in the tiny restroom that reminds patrons that the building is over a hundred years old, with equally delicate centenarian plumbing. I tried the following things over the course of two consecutive days: smoked trout baguette (sophisticated and satisfying), pistachio croissant (crisply, flaky, and a lovely filling in a truly-French style), pain-au-chocolat (classic if a little breadlike), and Oregon Roll (essentially a peanut-butter & jam offering). The first two were sufficiently good to warrant a return visit. Authentic French pastries are rare-enough in Bend that I'll be back to see what other flaky pastries they come up with! read more

The person with the origami crab tattoo along with her sidekick were so warm and welcoming from the get go. The cafe is beautifully cozy and the outdoor area is spacious, peaceful and relaxing. Food is always really good. But the service this time was awful. You could hear the lady in the back being rude to the staff and then coffee barista someone found a car key that nobody claimed for over 15minutes and was trying to make sure no one stole it and walked to the barista she told her about the key and then the lady was like "set it down on the counter " in a super snarky tone and then she set it down and the lady grabbed it didn't say anything and slammed it next to her.
