I took him to the shop a few times, and I was okay with his grooming However, a day before Easter, I took him in for a haircut, and I was shocked by what happened to my new dog, Mylo. I had specifically asked the groomer to cut the hair short from the waist down and just trim the ears and top to maintain the style I wanted. Instead, they cut him as if they only knew one basic trimming technique and skimmed his body from top to bottom. I know his hair will grow back, so that's not what upset me the most. When the groomer brought Mylo to me, he looked scared and nervous. The groomer mentioned that he accidentally nipped him and that he had applied medicine and a bandage sealer. At first, I thought the cut didn't look too bad, but when I got home, I discovered a deep gash on his skin. I stayed for around five-six months and returned briefly later in the year. I'm writing this because I believe pet owners, parents, and other young workers deserve to know what goes on behind the scenes. What I experienced was not just unprofessional -- it was unsafe, exploitative, and in many cases likely illegal. On my very first day, I was told to come in work clothes -- even though I hadn't technically been hired yet. I filled out a paper application, had a quick basement interview, and then was immediately put to work. I was never truly trained. I was simply told when the dogs get fed and cleaned, and then left alone to handle everything myself. The person who was supposed to train me -- an adult employee -- offered me a beer just minutes after asking my name. I was 16. He drank on the job in front of me. During my time there, I saw other employees regularly drinking alcohol and smoking weed or cigarettes while on duty, sometimes in the grooming room or yard. There was no real supervision. I worked illegal hours for a minor -- sometimes seven days in a row and shifts as long as 10 hours, especially on weekends. I was told to clean using bleach and other chemicals with no gloves, no mask, and dogs in the same space, inhaling those fumes. Things got worse when I was told to help "clean up" and "renovate" the basement by the owner -- where dogs are kept overnight. I was forced to do construction work that is completely illegal for a 16-year-old: I mixed concrete, used a jigsaw to cut wood, removed rusted nails from beams, and laid flooring in a moldy basement full of rat traps, dust, fur, and dirty cages. I was scared to say no, even when I got sick -- and had to beg to be allowed to take one day off to recover from a high fever, nausea, and headaches. After I left, I referred a friend to work there, and was eventually asked to return. I came back but was given only one 4-hour shift per week, which barely covered any of my costs. They kept me listed as "in training" for months, even though no one was training me anymore. I was suspended for 2 weeks when I missed a shift due to school detention -- despite showing them proof. Later, when I asked to switch shifts to take my cat to a free rabies vaccine event, they refused, citing a "90-day probation," even though I had already been back for over 90 days. Perhaps the most concerning issue of all: I witnessed dogs being physically hit by caretakers. Dogs left overnight were kept in a moldy, unsanitary basement, locked in cages from 8 p.m. until 8 a.m. with no overnight staff, despite the business advertising "overnight care." The area had yellowed tubs, mold on the walls, sink water used for drinking and bathing, and fur everywhere. It was not a safe or healthy place for animals. Before I finally left for good, management told me they wanted me to begin grooming dogs once I finished 11th grade -- when I turned 17. However, you need a license in New Jersey to work as a groomer, and I had received zero formal training. They were planning to have me handle clippers, scissors, and other dangerous tools without any proper certification, putting both me and the animals at risk. I want to be clear: I love animals, and I took the job because I thought I'd be helping care for them. But what I saw was the opposite of care. I took my purebred mini poodle here to get a simple bath and trim. It was running on 4.5 weeks and I was afraid by week 6, his fur would become either matted or he would start to lose his shape. For additional context, My groomer has been on a sabbatical which ill timed with my upcoming vacations. Thankfully the staff at Palisades welcomed my dog with open arms. We arrived and filled out the paperwork, and I was asked how I wanted to cut. I replied "puppy cut with half an inch all round, maintain his poodle teddy bear face and body shape" and I emailed a picture of his last cut for reference. About two hours passed and unfortunately what was in the email, and how my dog was previously shapes was botched! My champion bred mini poodle now looks like an odd shaped dachshund poodle mixed. Though I am thankful that the staff was nice and welcoming, I wish they were humble enough to share the teddy bear/poodle puppy cut was out of their expertise. 1/5 stars because he was cleaned and smelled yummy and again, the overall staff demeanor. We just have to wait about 2 months now, for him to fill in for his regular shape up. Thank goodness it's only hair and it grows faster on poodles than humans. I found Palisades due to the high reviews on Google. They incentivize patrons to write good reviews for a discount however such biases leads to moments like mine. read more

We brought our three rabbits here for full service grooming, which included a wash and nail clipping, which they badly needed. This is the second time we brought our first two rabbits and we liked the service and the quality of their work so much we brought the full trio back again once we got our third. Nice customer service, reasonable prices, and really groomed the rabbits, which is a difficult job because they're so fidgety and prone to nervousness. We dropped off our dog and were trying to explain groomer of the cut we were looking for. we were trying to give him exact sizes for the fur we wanted as last time they cut his hair a little short. the groomer came back and told me he is more of a visual guy and asked us to trust him. He completely ruined his cut. the cut was completely uneven. I was not going to post this until now, but this morning i saw his ear and they did not even bother to clean that. I hate writing bad reviews.. but please, read my review. I took a chance on this place because my normal salon, Glamour Pet Spa was booked for weeks and my little Shih Tzu needed a cut BAD. Immediately I felt odd leaving him there as soon as I left. It did not seem very cleanly in there, nor did the groomer seem super friendly. But.. I trusted this establishment since the reviews weren't that bad. Boy was that a mistake.. Not only did my dog receive the WORST haircut he had ever had.. the groomer clipped him in his leg so that it was very red and slightly scabbed when I picked him up. Not only that, but when I pick my dog up from his usual salon he is so happy and seems like he just had the best time of his life! When I picked him up from here he was shaking so badly and seemed off, as if he wasn't handled properly. THATS NOT EVEN THE END OF IT. Their package includes a nail trim, his nails were still dirty and not trimmed.. I know my dog and he seemed super scared and ready to leave when I got there. My pup is a nervous boxer mixed rescue dog but as soon as she sees that we are headed to palisade pups her tail goes crazy and she practically drags me until we reach the establishment. There have been a handful of times where I go to pick her up and she doesn't want to go home with me. They even threw her a birthday party when I dropped her off on her special day!! I had very high hopes given the amazing reviews. We have a Coton De Tulear. I was very specific about not cutting his hair too short, what ears we wanted and not shaving him under any circumstances. I felt like John was annoyed when I was explaining my requirements and said he was a professional and knew about Coton De Tulear cuts. He insisted there was no way he could give a sanitary cut without clippers and that made sense. We gave them a picture. When we picked Tulo him he had a freaking Poodle cut. His hair was too short, the bridge of his nose completely shaved off, the forehead was high. This was not the work of someone who had dealt with Cotons before. Anette was nice and offered to have it fixed. But you can't un-shave Tulos nose. Tulo was very lethargic afterwards, not sure why. He was very depressed for 3 days. read more

It appears that our first time to the groomer there was a fluke. The 2nd time we went, they had notes in the file on how to shape the ears, hind quarters etc. The groom wasn't as good, but acceptable. We were told it was a new groomer. However, The last time we went in, it was a completely different experience. I don't understand how how they could mess this up so bad. The other places he's been are the Ritz compared to how this turned out. First, they cut the quick on not one, not two, but several nails. You'd think you'd not be cutting so short after you hit the first one. We also live downtown, so my dog only walks on concrete, and goes for several walk a day- ie they were not that long. I use to work in a veterinarians office and use to do routine nail clips on a daily basis. When you clip nails, there is a right way and a wrong way. They went the wrong way and CRACKED the nail, on top of cutting it to short. OUCH! What's just a disturbing is that they gave me back my dog and didn't notice the blood all over the floor until I said I think he's still bleeding. He bled the whole way home in the back seat. I had no idea how bad they were until I got home and cold calm him down enough to properly look at them. 2nd- the cut/quality of the groom was horrible. There is no excuse for a dog to have a choppy haircut from a professional groomer. Which, my guess is, they are not professionals and need extensive training. There are actual schools people go through to do dog grooming- I question if they have attended one of these or have any formal training. 3rd- the owner (who later told my husband he himself did the ears), said was trying to match his age?? because of what he was putting him through?? Whatever that means. And that "you don't notice it when his ears are up" Ok, well, his ears don't normally stick up, he's a floppy eared dog. Take a look at the pic for yourself and judge. read more

Based on my first visit they would get a 3.5 star review. They squeezed me in, charge similar to everyone else and can give my dog a style which is usually more (ie: Pom Pom Hair style, Mohawk hairstyle etc). Although the style turned into a bang over some time, I didnt mind it. They called me to tell me my dog has fleas and they took the liberty of giving him a flea bath for an additional $10. No problem. However, as a follow up. I think my dog still has fleas (and maybe my cat as well). So I called and asked if they were able to just give a flea bath to my dog and cat. Well, I was told they can give my dog a bath for $45 and add $10 for the flea bath; same for the cat. So I took that to mean - no, they cannot just do flea baths and paraphrased that. The older sounding gentleman I spoke to replied in a snotty tone "I thought I was clear in my answer the first time, but let me repeat myself" and proceeds to repeat himself. When I repeated myself and told him that my dog doesn't need a regular bath as he was there just last week and just needs fleas removed. He repeated his speech for a 3rd time, adding most requests for a bath come w other grooming needs. Again my dog was just there last week and has no additional grooming needs. So I give them 2 stars. If I can speak and communicate in the same language and get attitude imagine the treatment animals who cannot communicate as clearly get. Won't be giving them my business again, even tho I live around the corner. read more

Our Hank has been coming here for 5 months now and absolutely loves it. He runs to the door the minute he realizes where we are headed and is so excited to play with his friends. You can tell these dogs get the attention needed throughout the day. They also do overnight boarding for a fair price. And my favorite is that you can schedule pretty easily to have your dog groomed- clean and ready for when you pick him up. The lady at the front was also very trashy she was piercing her ear with a paper clip at the front desk how unprofessional is that! Disgusting!!
