The Miami…read moreBeach Improvement Company was founded in 1916 by John Collins and it platted the Oceanfront Subdivision and named the area Miami Beach. In the 1920's during Florida's land boom years, many hotels and mansions were built. The 1930's and 40's were the height of the Art Deco design movement inspired by Paris and many of the hotels were built in this style. By the 1970's Miami Beach was run down by neglect and salt water damage. Things were so bad that the movie Scarface used South Beach as a stand in for a drug infested ghetto neighborhood. Barbara Baer Capitman and a group of activists banded together to preserve the Art Deco buildings of South Beach. Capitman founded the Miami Design Preservation League in 1976 with Leonard Horowitz which started a movement to place one square mile of South Beach on the National Register of Historic Places. Their efforts enabled 800 of the historic Art Deco buildings to be saved. In the late 1980's South Beach had a resurgence. Models and the fashion industry moved in. An area that once had people thinking twice about driving through became home to the wealthy. Today it is walking friendly and generally low crime. As a component of trying to save the Art Deco gems in the 1970's, the Miami Design Preservation League founded Art Deco Week in 1978 to bring attention to saving this area. The event transitioned into an annual free weekend festival celebrating the district's history, arts, and iconic style. Today it is the Preservation League's largest educational outreach program for the city's famous landscape. Although I have visited this area many times, this was my first time attending the festival. My favorite part was being able to walk up and down Ocean Drive since it was closed off to traffic for this weekend. Many of the restaurants extended their normal sidewalk dining into the street creating elaborate outdoor dining areas. In addition to dining specials offered by area restaurants this event also has a car show, artisan market, Jazz Age Stage with live music and dancing, VIP Opening Night Soiree, lectures, and residential and Ocean Drive architectural tours for $40. You can also visit the Miami Preservation League's Welcome Center and Museum. There are fun photo opportunities set up in Lumus park opposite the Versace mansion. Parking in South Beach is always a challenge but as a fan of both history and architecture this festival was right up my alley.

This venue was shining like a jewel. The acoustics were superb. The staffers were friendly and helpful. The show went off magnificently, and though the performers were the stars, stars need a beautiful sky as the backdrop, and this venue made it even more magical. Who would have thought that the highlight of a trip to Miami Beach would be an indoor performance rather than the beach? We hope to return.

I have been attending and working the Miami yacht show for over 10 years. It's generally held…read moremid-February around Valentine's Day. It is a great event for vendors, buyers and looker on-ers that want to check out what these luxury "water houses" have to offer. The event was held off Collins for many years. BUT... Important note: The new location is now at One Herald Plaza between the Venetian and MacArthur causeways. The are many parking lots (garages), shuttles and public transportation as well as hotels to choose from. This new location makes staying near or far more convenient - in my opinion - as there are more ways and streets to get to the event. Instead of getting stuck on Collins in an Uber. Once you are in the event there are covered (air conditioned) areas that will display items anywhere from t-shirts to fancy motors. You could learn about the new material for wet suits or find some cool new boat shoes. The main event and "to see" part are of course the yachts. This location houses many luxury yachts from a large slew of brands. You can walk up and down the docks dreaming of which one you'd choose.. or just buy one if your pocket book allows. While I believe most are new displays there are some pre-own brokerage boats. If you've never been on one, they're a wonderful sight to see! Note that to get on a yacht you most likely will need to provide some information to each company. Honesty is key here. While they would like your information for marketing and security type reasons, they may also place you with a broker. Should you just want to see a yacht for fun, let them know. There is a food area to enjoy various food trucks and beverages. It is largely covered as well as uncovered. Most take cards as well as cash. Bring a hat and sunscreen and if you get motion sickness, know that if the weather is super windy, the docks can sway a bit.

We had 2 non functioning salt shakers at the table and upon opening them we found clumped salt all the way to the shaker top and rust...yes rust!! The amount of money they charge per person should buy me a smile and rust-free salt shakers. I will never recommend this place to anyone.

Russo's Coal Fired Italian Kitchen recently closed and coming soon a Shake Shack will take its place. Also the Pet Supermarket closed and The Tree House is being built out. The Whole Foods and Planet Fitness are the two big anchors. There are two free standing banks - Chase and TD. Three entrances into the plaza from Pines Blvd but the traffic is horrible.

We got married in March 2022 with 150 people with a "Tropical Elegance and Garden Formal theme" . We had the ceremony on the golf course, dance floor outside + upstairs under the twinkle lights, buffet dinner inside the restaurant, and an awesome lounge area on the bottom platform. The day of staff were notably experienced and passionate about making sure my husband and I were comfortable all night. From the moment we entered our party, they were waiting to take our drink order and during dinner had our plates ready at our sweetheart table cut up into bite size pieces. I could go on, and on about all the amazing touches Parties By Pat added, but the biggest for me were trust and peace of mind knowing their team was going to deliver.
