Today I was in the area of Palolo and I needed to use the restroom. I stopped by Palolo Valley District Park located right on Palolo Ave . To my surprise I think this is one of the most cleanest public park restrooms around . Believe menI've been to a lot of parks since I drive ride share part time when you need to go I look for the closest restroom I can find LOL! Especially you'll think near a housing project the restroom would be all broken and graffiti with paint and smell like urine and rubbish all over . Final game of the season. First time to this park and field 2. For a Sunday in December it was extremely hot. We were extremely grateful that one family on our team brought two tents to provide the player's families shade. Parking was a bit of a challenge around the park. We arrived early before the practice and game so teams playing at that time hadn't pulled out. Fortunately there was a ramp so pulling our wagon with chairs and cooler was easier. Not much shade so come prepared with sun glasses, hat, sunscreen and at least an umbrella plus water. Our team won so the little guys had a good end of the season. They all received medals after the game. We're all waiting for next season in 2025. read more

Palolo Valley District Park is in a very nice part of the neighborhood with scenic views of the mountains nearby. I had not actually been in it until super recently, but there is a swimming pool, basketball courts, tennis courts, children's playground, baseball fields, and other amenities. Plus, there is the big indoor gym. There is plenty of parking in both of the designated lots and along the street. read more

Palolo Valley District Park is adjacent to Jarrett Middle School. The park is huge and has ample parking. It has a jungle gym, baseball field, pool, basketball courts, and gym. This park pretty much has it all. I come here for my son's basketball games. It's really helpful that they have outdoor courts, and the gym that doubles as an indoor basketball court. While the game is in session in the gym, the other teams can practice outside at the courts. Inside of the gym is very nice and new. They have fold out bleachers that people can sit on. The jungle gym is on the other side of the outdoor courts. It's huge and has parts sticking out from all sides. Growing up, I didn't see too many of those apparatuses. Equipment sure has come a long way. The only negative thing about this park is that it's located on a hill. It's a pain walking up and down the park to get from place to place. read more

This is an outdated gymnasium. It looks like it is going to fall apart. It will be good if department of recreation remodel so the community can enjoy it. sad to say i have to give it 1 star. Rusty and the place looks like no one had maintained it. read more

Visited here to try out some boxing. It was so cool. There's a huge boxing ring inside the gym. The people are friendly and eager to help. The coach who runs the boxing (Joel Kim) is totally nice. Worth checking out for some boxing lessons! read more

I tried to learn how to swim as a kid here and almost drowned. Or at least so I remembered it to be. More recently, I wanted to try different things to see how much of a bad swimmer I am. #IronMan in training. Yes folks, I had a dream of trying to do an IronMan someday. Such dreams were dashed when I learned that swimming was to be an integral part of it and not just running a lot. I remember the days where I had to learn how to swim here at the Palolo Valley Pool. It was the closest facility to Liliuokalani Elementary school at the time, don't know if Kapolono community pool was feasible or built 25 years or so ago. And so, I came to Palolo Valley pool to read discover what I have been missing since childhood. I have learned that not so much anymore, but just my fears as a kid, who just was just too scared of his own shadow. The hours here are very peculiar, just because they don't open at night, even though they have lights up at night. Too bad that they are just open in the weekday afternoons for free open swim and on the weekends too, which is usually when I go whenever I feel the urge to get in the water. While I do have anxiety about drowning and such, I try to be brave and just do what I can and just get better. I usually get looks about swimming with a top on. I don't care really. I'm just that self conscious about myself. I kind of wish that I had a nicer leaner body, but what can you do but to work hard to achieve it. With that said, Palolo Valley Pool is tucked away in beautiful Palolo Valley in Honolulu at 2007 Palolo Avenue. Next door is the Jarrett Middle School and the low income public housing project is across the street. Admission is free to use this community pool, which is always a plus. Free is always a good way to help defray costs while having a good time on a weekend. They can be closed due to a private classes, but on the most part, swimming here is definitely free. To get here, there is a public parking lot for your added convenience. But if you are like me, best bet is to use public transportation. Route 9S currently serves this area and stops right in front of the swimming pool complex, which is always nice. There is lifeguard duty here, but do always swim at your own risk. Don't want to drown today or any day you are here. Every time I come to swim here is always pleasant time. While the pool is decently large, there's always kids here along with her parents. You can't really say this is a private pool, but is probably enough. Unless you go to the 24 hour fitness in Mililani, where they have a pool on the premises, then you can just say you almost have a private pool, depending on who is using it on a daily basis. There is a tendency that the pool can be warm or cold depending on the current weather conditions on any given day. Testing the water before you get in is almost always a good idea. The staff here is great and always looking forward to the next time I come here, which can be far and few between. Just because I love running little too much. And swimming can take a backseat. 4.0 stars for being free. But 3.5 stars for being just an average pool and have irregular hours. Support local! B- read more

Palolo Valley District Park is located maybe a mile up Palolo Ave. from Waialae Ave. This place has a big swimming pool, gymnasium, and a boxing ring. I'm not sure of what other stuff they have here. They have a parking lot by the swimming pool and gym. I think there's another parking lot on the other side of the gym as well. I've been here a few times only to play volleyball and some basketball. I've only been here on Saturday afternoons but it switches between here and Lanakila district park. PROS: Decent sized gym with a full court and two small courts running perpendicular across the full court. The perimeter is bigger than other gyms so you can warm up and stretch if you need to. They have bleachers on one side as well. This gym is also on the cooler side. It seems well ventilated. Also, if you get hurt, they have ice here. I'm sure they have first aid and ice at all gyms. But one day, one of my friends had a BIG bruised bump on his shin because some guy kneed his shin. Not a pretty sight. They gave him ice and luckily it didn't get worse the next day. Today, he's okay and walking again. CONS: If it's a sunny day outside and it's at a certain time of day, the placement on the windows isn't the greatest. You'll have beams of light shining in the gym and if the ball is coming for your face and you can't see it because of that light shining in your eyes, then it might be lights out for you. But it's okay, because they have ice. :) Final Comments: Typical district park gym but a bit on the dirtier side. Bathrooms are also dirty as well. I think it's pretty cool that they have a boxing ring in here as well. Maybe I'll try it out one day. Overall Rating: "Excellent" Nothing to complain about here. A review for the pool only: This is a huge pool and free to the public 7 days a week. They have free play/lap swimming in afternoons, and on weekday nights. Certain hours they open the lap swim lanes for the full 50 meters. During other hours, lap swim is the short-way across (25 meters?). When you lap swim during the 25 meter times, there are no lane lines. You have to use the black line on the bottom of the pool to direct you to stay into your "lane". They have kickboards out for any lap swimmer who wants one. Showers are not the best. There are 6 open showers in the women's restroom and the water is often icy cold. By the time I finish showering, my hands are beginning to turn white from numbness. The floors are pretty dirty feeling and looking. Worst part? The toilets stalls have no doors. God forbid you should need a restroom, you'll have to be okay with others possibly seeing you do your business. Also, as far as the pool area, it would be nice if there were shaded areas to sit. It's unfortunate that the city doesn't have the funds to upkeep the bathroom facilities because its definitely in need of a make-over/update. But I guess its hard to complain when its free. Despite the condition of the bathrooms, I still come here for cooling off or a work out. read more

Palolo Valley Pool is one of those hidden gems that locals really don't want everyone finding. Let's get past the obviously....it's not in the nicest part of town and it's directly across from low income housing. The only reason I mention it is because I'm sure there are some tooty frooty super snooty people out there reading this and thinking that this is not the pool for them. Good. For the rest of us that don't give a crap about that kind of stuff...this is a great pool! The facilities, while older, are in relatively great condition. The pool and showers are clean. There's both long and short lap swims (not at the same time). When the pool is having short lap swim there's a large open area for folks to play in. We made use of this area throughout my wife's pregnancy - it was the perfect place for her to just walk around in the water and keep cool. And now that our little one is learning to swim, or at least be comfortable in the water, it's a great place to walk around with her so she can splash and have a good time. It is also one of the best places to beat the heat! Every once in a while you get a couple of knuckleheads trying to make trouble. Usually it involves hanging on the steps, jumping in the water, or disturbing other people. The staff are great about taking care of everyone there. You can tell they like what they do and care about the pool that's in their charge. read more

Palolo Valley District park has been a refuge for kids/teens either after school, during school breaks, or for any adult looking for a place to workout. I've been boxing there for almost a year, but am always so impressed with how many people CONSISTENTLY use this park (i.e. Dodgeball, weight room, volleyball, basketball, boxing, Jiu Jitsu, Muay Thai, swimming, rugby, softball.... The list is endless)!!! Great staff there... Great facilities. It's a community spot that should be, at the very least, checked out by EVERYONE who lives in the area. There's 24 fitness, there's UFC gym, etc etc. There's something different and so satisfying about supporting a community spot that supports its community! read more

Hands down my favorite park! Love the pool--usually empty, clean, relaxing and of course, a great way to work out. The park is also usually pretty empty. If it's not, it's usually a bunch of little kids playing rounds of various sports or it's right after schools out. I've watched a few kickball tournaments here. No idea who those people were or what league it was for, but very entertaining. I love that there are lights at this park so you can continue doing whatever you're doing when it's dark out. The only thing I don't like is that Palolo is almost always pretty chilly and these past 2 weeks it's been annoyingly windy. I avoid the park when it rains but if it's sunny out, I'm always down to play a game of soccer, tennis, football, sprint around or take my dog out for a nice walk :) read more

6.9.13. I love how big this park is & I have to say I think it's one of the better district parks around in terms of what's offered...I mean boxing ring--cool! Olympic size swimming pool--also cool! Ample parking space--also thumbs up! But the gym...it's great that it's so spacious and lots of court space too...but this place is begging to have some renovations done!! This review is for the pool. I want to say that the pool is relaxing. The problem is the hours but it's a public pool. One has to get a schedule for the ever changing hours through the seasons. The pool is really great. It's not at all crowded akin to other pools. It is strange. It is in the middle of Palolo and here is this pool. There are kind patrons. There is hot water, which is amazing, and goes beyond words. I do not know who added hot water but it is stupendous. The hours of the pool does affect how the place operates. In the early hours of the afternoon the pool goes 50 yard distance. In the late afternoon it goes back to 25 yards. There are no lay lines except the shallow/deep in the 25 yard distance. Parking maybe a problem because of the overflow from the district park facility. Otherwise than that, I can think of no higher praise, except the hot water. read more

This review is for the pool. Went there on a Sunday afternoon for swim with son. Our first time here. I had the arm floats on him and he was having so much fun. After about 10 minutes one of the lifeguards came by to say we had to take off his arm floats. I don't know why that was a problem. Once I took it off my son wasn't in the mood to swim anymore since he didn't have the arm floats. I wish they weren't so strict about arm floats. read more

WARNING! LAZY LIFEGUARDS HERE!!! I arrived here with my three kids (ages 11, 7, and 5) and my 4 year old nephew. We normally go to Manoa pool but it was closed due to a competition so we ended up at Palolo Pool. My kids know the drill, shower first then swim. My nephew wasn't allowed in the pool because he had a cold and he wasn't going in. My three kids start heading into the pool and I'm approached by a lifeguard asking how old my kids were. I told her and she proceeds to tell me that I had to go into the pool with my 5 year old. I stated that at Manoa pool as long as I was present around the pool that he could go in. She told me that it was stated on the rules sign. I told her I didn't have a swimsuit and if it was ok for me to go in with my clothing. She said yes. I told her that I had to wait until my brother came to pick up his son before I could get in and that I would remain by my 5 year old until he arrived. She was fine with that. So my son who isn't super comfortable in the pool hangs out at the stairs of the pool coming in and out and I sat there at the edge supervising both him and my nephew. Another lifeguard approaches me and tells me that we can't stay where we are because we are blocking the walkway. I tell her I was told to supervise my child and that I was going in once my nephew gets picked up. She proceeds to tell me that we all had to wait on the stone bleachers until then. So I pull my child from the pool and go to the steps until my nephew gets picked up. I do a quick rinse and step into the pool fully clothed with my 5 year old. He's so uncomfortable with the depth that we only spend a few minutes in the pool. At that point I decided to go read the posted rules. OH MY!!! The rules clearly state that children under 7 must be SUPERVISED by a responsible adult. Now I was there and supervising. Then I'm told we're blocking the walkway. Let me tell you, there were two parts of the stairs and my child would have moved to accommodate someone, especially with me present and SUPERVISING him. Also I was on the very edge of the pool so I could closely supervise him and there was SIGNIFICANT space for others to walk and pass. Also their rules stated that swimsuits were required. I approached the lifeguard right in front who hadn't approached me. I told him how upset I was and asked who the manager was. The second lifeguard who had approached me comes out of the office and I told her how I felt. She tells me that the signs aren't always updated with the rules. I ask her for a pamphlet with it and she says they don't have one. Convenient. This is just straight B.S. The only reason I was told to go in is because these lifeguards are too lazy to do their jobs! Case in point the rules state that swimsuits are required and I clearly didn't have one but hey whatever makes their job easier right? If you don't mind contradicting lazy lifeguards, the pool itself is spacious and your kids will likely enjoy it. * I posted the rules in the photos. read more

Palolo pool has a new City supervisor. She is efficient, friendly and conscientious. Her lifeguard staff are helpful and friendly. Hours for public swim are conveniently daily and are posted, with copies available, or one can advance call if uncertain. Facility is clean and safe. Hot water in showers and offstreet parking most hours unless heavy usage. Please enjoy the public pool and obey all safety and health rules. read more
