This place left such a sour taste in my mouth.
First of all, I looked at their website and saw no class descriptions, just levels. I saw a couple of adult classes in the mornings without level description (meaning it's probably mixed and very casual, aka not at all my thing), and numbered levels in the afternoons. I've been dancing for over 10 years at pre-professional ballet schools and have been a part of a couple pre-professional ballet companies affiliated with my schools, and am in my early 20'- I usually take kids' classes because adult classes tend to be casual. Note: I am only talking myself up so much to put this review in perspective.
After my initial website analysis I came to Yelp for reviews and only found 1 favorable review, so I called- they did not pick up the phone. I decided to go in person. I estimated that I would go to the school in time for both the second highest and highest level numbered class they offered, giving the secretary the choice to put me up for a placement class in either level. I've always taken the highest level for placement class at every school I've gone to, and have never been asked to go down a level before, so I was mostly planning on taking their high-level class.
I arrived well in advance, ready to fill out first-time paperwork, with my huge ballet bag in tow, my ballet tights, a warm-up sweater, and a tight bun. I had to walk through a Chinese food restaurant to even find the place after driving up and down the street 80 times and not finding it. Eventually I found it in the back alley of some martial arts studio. It was small and downright ghetto. When I got to the place, there was a glass door (open) and a tiny space with a chair, and all the lights off. In the chair was a woman, and behind the chair was an open door which opened to a miniscule studio with uneven floors and several girls taking class.
There was no secretary. No desk staff at all. Just the teacher, not even INSIDE the room (because it was too small?) and a 100% dark "hallway". Where do these girls change? The Chinese restaurant's bathroom? The teacher was not even walking around the class giving hands-on corrections or dictating an exercise, she was just sitting there in a chair by the door...at first I thought she was a mom because she wasn't DOING anything.
Leaving this awful first impression aside, I walked in and asked if there was a staff member I could speak to for lesson information. The lady rudely said "can I help you" and I told her I was coming in for a placement class. She answered "well, there is an adult class on Tuesday morning, have you ever taken a ballet class before".
Alright, first of all: I have a bun, tights, and a GIGANTIC Bloch dance bag with about 3 pairs of beat-up pointe shoes in the very visible outside mesh bag compartment of said dance bag- do I look like I have never taken a dance class before? Second of all, you are not even going to ask me what level I am before asking me if I want to go in your pre-professional program or your lazy adult classes? Extra points for that.
I humor her and tell her I've been dancing for over 10 years, and that I wasn't able to come in the mornings. She replies that there is an adult class on (I forget what day) evenings. I ask her the level of the class...she seems a bit perplexed that I would even CARE what level it is, and says "well....it's...."mixed" (aka it's for beginners and a few older ladies who come in to "work out" but don't have performance aspirations). I tell her I'm looking for an advanced-level class, which is what I'm accustomed to. She replies with "well, that's BASICALLY what it is..." and I ask her if the class only meets once a week, to which she answers yes, at which point I tell her it can't be an advanced class. I also tell her I've been on pointe for 7 years and would expect daily technique AND pointe classes. She tells me she can offer no such thing for me.
By the way, I've been told by every person who's met me for the first time that I could pass for a high school student (I agree with them) so perhaps she could have asked my actual age before assuming I was old enough to want to take classes with people my mom's age or older, rather than be with girls who at 2-3 years age difference would still be considered my peers.
I've never met such a stuck up, ignorant, disrespectful lady with such a tiny, disgusting studio to show for it. Do yourself a favor and stay away- whether a seasoned dancer like me or a total beginner, you can find a bigger, brighter facility, a teacher who is actually IN the classroom TEACHING, and someone who doesn't belittle you before even getting to know you. This lady had ZERO interest in my goals whatsoever, and I doubt she has any interest in anyone else's goals, either. Else she might be inside a classroom teaching rather than at the door waiting for a prospective new student to insult. read more
