The line had around 50 people in it, but the wait was only 10-15 minutes which is the same wait time as a ride at knotts so it's not that bad. This maze was SUPER SUPER SUPER scary!!! I was screaming and grabbing on my Bf's shirt the whole time! The optical illusions and the scary people mixed with the darkness was beyond creepy! I can't believe I thought it was going to be a kid maze!!! There were grown men screaming behind me and the woman behind me peed in her pants. Cute claw arcade in Torrance with a decent number of machines, friendly staff and clean setup. 1…read moretoken per game on the larger machines but two plays per token on the smaller ones. Very cute selection of plushies and trade ups are possible but for the medium/large stuffies only. I've become somewhat of a regular of these arcades as they've been popping up in SoCal, and have become somewhat good at figuring out what helps for machines. Weight distribution matters and claw strength! I found that the small machines were much easier to win prizes (maybe by intention) and the larger machines had such cute prizes but loose grip strength in the claw making it harder to win the bigger, good prizes. So all of a sudden your tokens start vanishing quickly. I had 50 token credits and ended up with two medium sized plushies and 6 small items, which for me is on the smaller end of a haul. Still had fun but other claw arcades may give you a better win rate. Parking is plentiful, in the same lot as a Dollar Tree and several other stores.

If they are they are doing a good job letting people win most of the time. I think there were a few machines at time I had to try 8 times and gave up because I couldn't pick up the plushie. It's such a nice treat because if we have a bunch of little ones we don't want, and a big one we do like better, it's worth it. I leave with at least one big plushie that I exchange for 8 medium plushies, and a few more medium plushies. Total I take home each trip 1 big plushie, and 3-6 medium to little plushies. Other claw machine places I feel cheated because you either have to put a bunch of coins in to play once, or the plushies aren't easy to grab. With only about 450 seats, there really isn't a bad seat in the house, and they consistently bring in fun and entertaining acts. On Saturday, 05/09, we caught Daybreak, a tribute to Barry Manilow, and it was a blast. The lead singer mentioned several times that he was battling a cold and wasn't thrilled with his vocal register that night, but honestly, I thought he sounded very good. The group is based out of Florida, so having them come through town felt like a real treat. They played all the hits, the frontman even has a resemblance to Barry, and you could tell that when fully healthy, his pipes can absolutely hit every note. Really fun evening, great crowd, and another reminder of why this venue is such a hidden gem in the South Bay.

My husband & I recently hosted a celebration of life for his Father at the Ken Miller Recreation…read moreCenter. The Center is located near the Torrance Police Headquarters and City Hall. We had checked different halls for rent in the Torrance area but definitely made the correct choice with the Ken Miller. The office staff at the City of Torrance were wonderful to work with and made the process very easy; even staying open until 5:30pm so I could stop (with the payment) after work. The Center is a wonderful space. The coordinator met us a week before the function at 7:30am to go over the set up and items we would need. Besides setting up the tables & chairs, they provided a microphone & podium, a projector & screen (we had to bring a laptop for the photo show), a sound system for music we brought and even coffee, hot tea, water & everything needed for drinks. On the day of the event, the on-site staff was great to work with. He made sure everything was working correctly and was available if we needed anything. We would highly recommend the Ken Miller Recreational Center for anyone looking to host a function in Torrance. Our set-up was seating for 120 people plus tables for a buffet lunch, drinks, desserts and a welcome table.

I posted the photos for Ken Miller Recreation Center earlier in the day & postponed writing my review. I didn't realize there's a dedicated festival category: Japanese Cultural Festival. I'm posting here to accompany my photos. The Torrance Sister City Association is holding the 42nd Annual Bunka-Sai Japanese Cultural Festival this weekend: Saturday, 04/26/14 - Sunday, 04/27/14 from 11:00 AM - 5:00 PM. It's a free event filled with performances, exhibits, demonstrations, & workshops: Japanese dance & music, martial arts (kendo, judo, naginata, & aikido), flower arranging, calligraphy, tea ceremony; Japanese foods (available for purchase); children's games (like tic-tac-toe toss, fishing, etc.), & arts & crafts. This event has free admission & parking with hourly raffles (think it's $1.00/ticket). It's a fundraiser for the TSCA Student Cultural Exchange Program, which sends 8 students + 1 adult to Kashiwa for 3 weeks in July; in August, TSCA will play host to Kashiwa students & an adult for 2 home-stays. Check out the 3D art stall, by an extremely talented but modest lady, Michiko Miyazaki, on the way to the patio (where the children's games are held & the tantalizing scents of Japanese BBQ & other yummy foods are prepared); see photos from Ken Miller Recreation Center (I had to beg a photo of the artist so I can show everyone who created these awesome artworks). My daughter had fun coloring a koi fish at the arts & crafts booth. While standing aside shyly watching some of the teenage volunteers toss bean bags for the tic-tac-toe toss (I think this game is $1.00, which I didn't have cash on me but my husband was running to the car to grab his wallet because H eyed on a water yo-yo earlier), one girl approached H & said she can give a couple of tosses. She hid behind my legs but the girl waited patiently with her hand outstretched with the bags... & H finally walked over to do a couple of tosses. Her 1st fell slightly short, so everyone (including myself) encouraged her to throw harder, & she "winged" the 2nd toss & it went f-l-y-i-n-g over & almost beaned one of the guys. :-O He exclaimed: "Wow... she has a strong arm!" What H was really interested in was the fishing game (where everyone was a winner); she "fished & caught" a pencil sharpener (something she needed for her color pencils), a sticker sheet, & a small bottle of bubbles. Very generous for a $1.00 game. =) And of course, H also got the water yo-yo (also $1.00, it's a thick-walled balloon filled with water tied to a rubber band... the kids love it... it's color, cute, & hey! it's a balloon). Come & support this cultural event... & enjoy the great food, interesting arts & crafts booths, & entertaining performances/demonstrations while you're at it.

Growing up in Chicago, I miss having access to delicious, authentic Greek food within a few mile radius. When a colleague, a very passionate volunteer of the festival, shared that she would be working the weekend, my hubs and I jumped at the chance to check it out. We're so glad we did. Thankfully, i walked around and noticed the line for the Dining hall with the full menu. Of course, I had to have the layered eggplant Moussaka and bless the volunteer serving who recommended I buy the double portion because my husband enjoyed sampling my order. Desserts are offered first and you dont ever want to miss that. I tried the Baklava Cheesecake. So yummy. There are additional booths and outdoor seating. Such a great community builder and I will definitely be back next year.

Large outdoor Greek festival that has been highly recommended to me by the locals who attend every…read moreyear. Yes, everything is expensive, but seeing as how it is located in a church, I'm assuming this is the church's way to have a fun fundraiser. There is an admission fee on top of the premium you pay for the food, but if you go to their website, you can get a coupon for one free admission. Parking: They have dedicated handicap spots on the curb right in front. Everyone else either did street parking, or parked in the empty elementary school lot across the street. Kids: They have a bouncy house and an inflatable slide, but you need to get a wristband for each child. Wristbands cost $10 and I believe they are unlimited for the day. They also sell candy in the area where they sell the wristbands. Food: It was cool to also see them roast the lamb off in one corner. I just wish they didn't use such a skinny lamb. The fries on the lamb plate were nice and crispy, and you get 3 pieces of lamb. They had a large pastry & cookie selection with a sampler deal. As someone who is not an expert in Greek desserts, I wish they made it clear on the menu which ones are the pastries by having it on one side of the menu and cookies on the other side. The items I wanted to try were all pastries and unfortunately they don't have a pastry sampler deal. Prices reflect per pastry or for cookies, you get 2. It wasn't until we were ready to go that I stumbled upon their indoor dining hall. It was packed in there as well as the shaded umbrella tables, so I guess I would have had to roast in the sun anyways. In the dining hall, they have pretty much the same offerings as outside, except there is rice pudding as well. While they did have the hot foods in a warm buffet server, the only way to get to it is by standing in line and waiting patiently to get to the last station, slowly scooting through each section since the line is roped off single file. Bathrooms: They have a bathroom inside the dining hall as well as across the outdoor tables. Inside the dining hall, the women's bathroom had 3 stalls and thankfully the line wasn't ridiculously long as they tend to be at festivals. They had live music, but it was too loud for my comfort. They also sold water ($2) and the bottle says that they donate a portion to mental health, which we really do need in America. Cool event, especially to go with friends. I'm really glad I came but this is a one-time experience for me. For me, the heat, the price, and the loud atmosphere is just not worth coming back - I much prefer going to an indoor artisanal specialty shop. Now I just really want to make a trip to Greece, lol.
