An order-at-the-counter locals spot. You can also buy deli cheese and meats.

The real deal cafetería where you can get an AMAZING sandwich at a reasonable price. This is in my top 2 favorite Cuban sandwiches ever; but for the customer service and portions versus cost, it IS my top choice. It's a very casual neighborhood spot on the marginal street right by Road #2 (Carretera #2), practically next to the Vega Baja Lino Padrón Rivera High School. You can get delicious breakfast here, like the kind your granny makes (if you're Latino). The sandwiches are INSANE. Even if you order a Media Noche, which is smaller than a Cuban sandwich, it's still huge. Coffee is also great, and there's a vast selection of baked goods (donuts, "mayorcas", guava "pastelillos", cakes, etc.) as well as deli goods to make your own good stuff at home (or the hotel). I have noticed they have a small divider and on the other side there's a bar and couple of pool tables, but I've never been there at night, to see how it is. But if you're going from San Juan to Arecibo, which many tourists do, this is a great breakfast and lunch spot. Get my favorite pastry!: "Quesitos rellenos de chorizo" (sweet pastry stuffed with chorizo sausage). TRUST ME: it sounds weird, because "quesitos" are usually stuffed with cream cheese, but they're addictive!

    Tasty Pastries!

Cubano was awesome and only 6 dollars. Chocolate donut wasn't the best, I'd stick with plain or another pastry.

Best hidden (from myself) place on the north of PR. Located in road #2, close to exit 42 in the…read morehighway (#22). We got to this place by pure luck and we were even skeptical at first. We had a long wait, but it was worth every minute of it. The appetizers (sandwiches of ham, turkey, chorizo) were phenomenal. The meat (churrascos and rib eyes) were all prime cuts and cooked to perfection; juicy and flavorful. We were a party of 8 and we were all more than pleased and happy with the food and service. Easy 5 stars . By the way, the place is truly a bakery, but surpasses many named and even recognized or so called restaurants.

***THE BEST CUBAN SANDWICH!***…read more A typical Puerto Rican small town "cafetería", very casual, but cute and warm, with lots of wood decoration. They have a lot of wines, cheeses and specialty hams, very much like Spanish "cavas". They have bakery sweets and sandwiches, breakfasts and snacks like croquettes and such. But they make, hands down, the BEST Cuban sandwich I've ever had. Ask for "pan sobao" -- a slightly sweeter and softer kind of bread. Great coffee too! It's a little too far from San Juan, unless you're headed towards Arecibo to do some tourism, in which case, this is an excellent locals stop on your way. :-) Disclaimer: Please remember Puerto Rico is not big on Yelp yet, since it's small enough for any local to find restaurants, therefore business owners don't advertise a lot and locals have no real need for it. So you see just 1 rating and review here now, but don't be fooled. Compare with my Florida and California reviews if you feel unsure. :-)
