Situated in the small park in front of Bonifacio High Street Central, The Gourmand Market was truly a fete of fantastic flavors. Numerous stalls lined up the park, offering delicious goodies that one can't find anywhere. Most were independent fare, cooked lovingly from the home, perhaps a quality that made whatever they were serving even more special. Standouts include a bagnet-filled wrap, chorizo quesadillas, mangga and suman flavoured ice cream and so much more. Perhaps what was even more interesting is the whole atmosphere of fun and revelry that was buzzing about the whole weekend. This is only the second installment of the series and I certainly hope that the organizers continue this event. Heaven knows that Manila needs more of it. When I first heard about this, I was really glad to see that this management being Gourmand Market really set up the place to look bespoke! It actually reminded me of Brooklyn, with the barrels turned into tables, light bulbs turned into lights, and the plants everywhere. I love how this event wasnt just a food place - I also got to see stalls selling plants (like cacti). It's such a fun time going around trying the different food from sweet to savory to sweet again. I got to buy a bag full of bagels from LES Bagels, cookies from Brothers Bakers MNL, and iced tea from Stellina's. The place and the food stalls are small so it's not hard to walk around again and again. It's really a nice place to bring your family and friends!

From the moment you crack open the menu, you know what you're getting: no gimmicks, just real-deal Filipino comfort food, with a nod to the streets via a proud offering of isaw. We went for the classics--nilaga, lechon kawali, grilled tuna belly, Java rice, garlic rice, and pork BBQ. Heavy hitters, all of them. I don't usually go for huge portions, but here? Resistance was pointless. Every bite hit like a memory you didn't know you had. The ambiance walks a fine line: traditional roots with just enough of a modern pulse to remind you where you are. Nothing sterile, nothing fake. Just good food and good people. The staff? Polite, attentive--like they actually give a damn. This is the kind of place I'd come back to without hesitation. No pretense. Just food that tells you a story. Lola Ote--my new favorite go-to in the Philippines.

We ended up pivoting to the lunch menu, and it turned out to be a great decision. The standout dish was the Pork Barbecue. It had the perfect balance of sweetness and savory flavor, and the meat was cooked just right. The Inihaw na Tenga ng Baboy (Grilled Pig Ears) was equally delicious, featuring the same excellent seasoning and smoky flavor in a different cut of pork. The Inihaw na Liempo (Grilled Pork Belly) was another winner, tender, juicy, and packed with flavor. We also enjoyed the "Bakuran" Salad, a refreshing combination of local vegetables, salted egg, and alamang (shrimp paste) that complemented the grilled dishes nicely. A special shoutout to our server, Joy, who was incredibly friendly and attentive. She got us seated quickly, and our food arrived even faster. The restaurant itself is clean, well-maintained, and thoughtfully decorated, creating a welcoming atmosphere. Overall, it was an excellent dining experience. We'll definitely be back and would happily recommend this place to friends and family.

Clearly, this was a mistake from the get go, since this was the only restaurant without a wait. It's a strange restaurant. The decor of the restaurant is reminiscent of a backyard, with its wooden furniture and picnic accents. The dim lighting is a strange choice though. The menu is all over the place. There are Italian dishes, Filipino foods, and "American food". Worst of all, the prices are exceptionally high for the quality of food you are getting. I ordered the cheese steak and the mac and cheese nachos to share. The mac and cheese nachos had soggy tortilla chips. The cheese sauce was also lacked any sharpness or tartness. The cheese steak had decent beef in it, but that misses the point of a traditional American cheese steak. The cheese was also relatively bland. The rest of my large group ordered various other items that ranged from ribs to spaghetti. The ribs were slathered in BBQ sauce and did not seem to actually be smoked in the traditional BBQ style. The spaghetti wasn't very good either. Everything else I tasted was also very meh. In the end, this turned out to be one of my most expensive meals in the Philippines, and I left full, but unsatisfied with the quality of the food I received.

After all, you know what you are getting. Grade A Kitayama Beef in your pares? It's not gonna be cheap, guys. Real maple syrup on your Southern-style Waffle Breaded Fried Chicken? It ain't gonna be some spare change. I enjoyed the chicken so much that I just had to go in there with my bare hands, kebs if I looked like an uneducated troglodyte. They say eating with utensils is like having sex with someone through an interpreter, so I ditched the fork and knife and just dug in. I was still pretty ravenous even after sharing half of my friend's beef pares (which was super tender! Love the sauce and the fried rice) so we both agreed to split a beef salpicao. When I say split, I mean he took the rice and I ate all the chunky and stringy beef cubes. Fair deal, huh? The perks of being my friend. Needless to say, I am coming back for more. Beautiful food, nice interiors, excellent service.

Back then, if you've been living in Manila for most of your life, the words "food" and "court" in the same sentence never really sounded appetizing. Enter Hole in the Wall. I've been here a few times already, but stepping inside its huge hip maze of interiors never ceases to excite me. I'm not sure if it's the thrill of choosing what meal to try next or just the nice aesthetic of literally everything, that excites me more. On my first visit, I made sure to first try the super popular fried chicken from Bad Bird. As a big fan Southern-style fried chicken, I wasn't disappointed. The crispy skin had a yummy seasoning that's new to the palette, very different compared to my other favorites, such as the Chickenjoy from Jollibee and the Pan Fried Chicken from Pancake House. And there's something about their side dishes that just completes the whole meal. The corn on the cob with bonito flakes, sweet and umami flavors melting in your mouth, was to die for. The coleslaw provided a nice acidic break from the saltiness of the chicken. The meal was a fun experience itself. Just the other day, I tried the Pastrami on Rye from Mr. Delicious and it was monstrous--just plain impressive in terms of size. I didn't even attempt to bite on the entire stack, using my fork and knife like a pretentious chick on a first date instead. Each bite off the monster-wich was packed with so many different flavors, though the pastrami still easily emerges as the hero of the dish. And let's not get started on the sweet potato chips. I'm not a big sweet potato-lover, but damn, the portion was more than satisfying. If there's anything I'd like modified, I just wish there was a bit more of the veggie pickles to cut through all the meat and fat. For now, I'll end this review right here. If it isn't yet so obvious, I'll probably be back here in no time to try a different food stall or two.

That's the thing about the La Salle area -- new places just sort of pop up like mushrooms in an intensely humid rainforest. My sisters wanted their big brother to take them out, so I did. I had no choice in the matter -- who says no to their little sisters? God, you're a monster. Anyway, I was very relieved when I saw the menu. Their prices were very manageable -- even more so when you see their serving sizes. That Php180 Singapore Laksa? It comes in a wok about a foot across, and the staff will light a burner underneath to ensure that it stays boiling hot throughout your entire meal. Talking about the staff, they're some of the best servers you'd ever encounter. I ate here alone and ordered enough food for four, and no one judged me. Not to my face anyway. It was the best day of my life.

I would also read about them in articles and foodblogs and I became very excited to try it out. Chomp Chomp is a Southeast Asian street food place, and it has a really good menu of street favorites such as laksa, nasi goreng, satay and even ramen. The first time I dined here and had the breakfast ramen, which had egg, spam and a generous portion of noodles, I knew I would love the rest of the menu. I also tried ordering the large laksa, which was served in a hot dish. I could barely finish the laksa, though it was really, really good. I like how creamy the laksa was, and it also came with a generous helping of fishballs, shrimp and fat noodles. I went to Indonesia several times last year, and I would always crave for satay and nasi goreng. They have a really tasty chicken satay which they serve with a nicely done nasi goreng, which is just the right amount of sticky and sweet. The prices are not too bad, considering that the food is good. I miss going to this place, which reminds me to keep in mind to visit this store again the next time I am in the area.
