I'm giving this place a lot of TLC because it's patrons deserve it. These are largely…read moreend-of-the-line alcoholics who are living on next to nothing. This is what they live for and I mean that literally. I want to see them keep their space where they can drink for cheap (at this stage, they drink to stay alive. It's not to get drunk. Necessarily) and have a few minutes of socializing. I know the thing now has shifted from dive bars to breweries, but I don't want places like Savoy's and others to close. Nobody likes alcoholism and drug addiction, but that's what's going on, and for now, alcohol is keeping long-term/end-stage alcoholics alive. I wish there was a better way. But I'm grateful there are still some cheap places for folks to go.

I did not look it over but after going to my vehicle looked at my messages and realized my credit card was charged 77. For those 4 items. I had appetizer pork burnt ends(mostly fat) with small cup of slaw.(No flavor)my friend had appetizer fish tacos.. with terrible tortilla chips as her side. And 2 Hong Kong ice teas(didn't taste right but drank them). I couldn't believe in this unassuming bar the cost for those 4 items could be so high. After calling the restuarant the bartender explained drinks 16each and appies 16. And 17 respectively. I will not bee going back to. Bbrickhouse. I'd think they believe their establishment should have higher prices than the new places on the water! It's simply stupid. We are talking aaan empty bar and empty restuaant through out the lunch time. And I guess others have already discovered the outrageoys pricing in the old stale bar. You better off anywhere but here. The Cobalt is the lowest common denominator of bars in Vancouver, but it manages to take a certain pride in the dilapidated scenario. Typically full of punkish-goth kids, it serves extremely cheap beer and highballs, has ample seating and room for mosh pits, and comes off as unpretentious, in a "too good for good" sort of way. Many loud bands are given their first opportunity here, and many of the better ones return after achieving success for nostalgia's sake. Things can get out of hand, as conventional wisdom tends to get left behind in coat check, and obnoxious teenage drunks start doing whatever they want. I've even seen a band shoot whiskey filled super soakers out into the audience. This is actually the only place I ever did cocaine, taking it for the only time on one of the musty old cars parked out back. I had always envisioned doing blow with nice clothes, beautiful women, a mirror, and a rolled up hundred dollar bill, but the Cobalt was so exactly opposite that it seemed perfect.

The long wooden bar dominated the space but was filled with an excellent variety of craft brew from all over Vancouver and BC. I really enjoyed the range of craft beer options, some included: Steel & Oak, Powell St., 33 Acres, Strange Fellows, Four Winds, and many more! There was also a great cocktail list that is keeping pace with craft cocktail explosion, particularly in Gastown/Chinatown. In this instance we got some cocktails "whipped up". Be careful what you wish for, in the best possible way. As the night went on it became a much more social some as people began to gather around the bar and fill up the space giving it a buzzing feeling. The bar staff were awesome! My first experience at the Astoria was this weekend, and to say it was eventful is an…read moreunderstatement. I came here to meet some friends and was unaware that it was Rent Cheque night. What is Rent Cheque night, you may ask? Oh, let me tell you. It's amateur strip night. Now don't get me wrong, I love a good strip club. But we were expecting to come into the Astoria for a drink and maybe shoot some pool, and damn, we ended up getting a whole show! The Astoria itself is fairly large - bigger than most bars I've been to in East Van. For it being a Friday and Rent Cheque night, the bar wasn't that full. Then again we came in well past midnight, so maybe the party was teetering off by then. This is probably one of the most dive-y bars in Vancouver that I've been to thus far. It's got the grunge, it's got the cheap drinks, it's got the no BS attitude servers (which is exactly what you want for a dive bar). If you want a dive bar, hit up the Astoria. Cash only, friends. But they have an ATM for your convenience.

The place is old and dirty, but it compensates by charging very little for draft beer and highballs. It's a classic, with two pool tables, a large area with big round tables, and a cleared out area next to a small stage for dirty dancing. The music isn't really bad, its just rehashed mash-ups of stuff you thought you were sick of. It's really loud though, and conversations will have to be yelled out. There's no cover, which is one of the attractions for the people who like to get tacky decked-out but can only afford to buy second hand clothes. The staff is really great, but the crowd can get pretty pretentious, with every other outfit screaming "look at me", and every other person from either Ontario or rural BC. It was even the featured venue for a series of photographs that went along with a terrible Adbusters article about scenesters.

Well maybe it can or is a night club at one point. Not sure about that. The venue wasn't bad. There is a stage in the venue, a bar area and bar high top tables at the back. Inside is a bit run down and can be sticky due to the sticky beer spill. Yes the place does have a strong beer smell. The chairs up front are temporary chairs not theater style. Guess venue can be use for multi-purpose.

It can become crowded and stuffy. It's the basement of the pub meaning there are stairs going into and exiting the venue. At the latest performance I did see a number of people with walkers so I guess they were able to get in just fine. There are some seating around the dancefloor. For shows like stand up comedy the dancefloor is lined with seats. It's not too difficult to find parking nearby.

Staff is nice. Drinks are basic well drinks, high balls and then they have a bunch of beers on tap. Normally has a decent sized dance floor. It's a smaller venue so it's good for performances.
