Another consistent place but this one is centrally located on campus at the HUB. Great for PSU students, employees and visitors. During Spring & Fall semester, I highly suggest using the online app for ordering and then pick-up your food. The line from 11-2 is always massive - but for good reason! Don't pretend Panda Express is healthy - it isn't. Simply enjoy them for what they represent: the epitome of streamlined corporate Americanized Chinese fast food. Besides, their location is fantastic, right on the lower floor of Penn State University's HUB (their student union building), which means lots of eye candy[1]. If you ask me restaurants that are supposed to be closed down in state college, Panda Express would be on my list. One thing about Panda Express that keeps it going: It is in the HUB. That's it. If people love this place, then it must be because of the convenient place or because they never tried another chinese food place or simply because they love americanized chinese food. During lunch hours I usually have to get in a really long line (this is my 2 experiences with PE in the past and I am not coming back to this place ever again. If other places are close and PE is open, I will just fast till other places open back). Then I will choose between 3 courses entree + rice/noodle/fried rice, or 2 courses entree, or 1 course entree panda bowl. I think it is only 6 dishes available for option: Orange Chicken, Beef, bla, bla, bla, and bla. They actually taste the same. Some frozen meat dumped at the pan, mixed with factory produced sauces (meh... Of course it is consistent. You don't need a chef to mix things already measured up for you). Then I pay up and sit down. First time I was done eating here, I regretted coming and eating at this place. Second time (last time) I came here, I gave myself a false empty hope that left me devastated after finishing the food. Oh yes, the place is clean and nice. Of course it is clean and nice, it is mainly maintained by the school. My review here is based on the food itself, nothing more. Speaking of shovelfuls, true, funny story: my sister eats her Panda with a spoon. Not because she can't use chopsticks (though when I was there, I was the only person using them... even the Asians there used forks) but because a spoon lets her put more food per arm motion into her mouth. It's funny, but I really like the food at Panda. It is American Chinese at it's best. The reason it is so good is because it is in the HUB, the student center of Penn State, and they have tremendous turnover. This ensures that everything they serve fresh. On a rare occasion I'll eat here because I've got limited time and have to basically be in the middle of campus. But it's overpriced for what it is, the quality has been really hit or miss, and while I know it's fast-food, the staff are usually pretty rude. As others have indicated, the only reason this place does so well is because it is in the HUB. This would never survive on College Ave unless the quality was more consistent, the staff is friendlier, and/or the price was lower. Today feels like a horror movie. I feel that my white privilege is running out. I waited in line for 25 minutes only to be looked straight in the eyes and skipped. Twice. I was feet from this woman and she just looked at people behind me and asked what they wanted. I tried to speak up to see if there was confusion but she waved her hand at me to go away. I've never been so embarrassed or emotionally destroyed. Good thing I had the ability to walk a few feet to a much more welcoming restaurant where I had the opportunity to dine like royalty. Burger King doesn't give me the squirts like panda does either. I guess there's a lesson to be learned today. Haven't been here in a couple years and am sad, but not surprised, to report that this is still the worst sushi I've ever had. 1. The fish tastes fishy. 2. The rice is mushy and over-vinegared. 3. Smaller selection than even mall sushi joints. 4. Overpriced, like everything else on campus. The only remotely edible things are the seaweed salad and maybe the inari, if they even have it anymore. Even the boba tea is bad. It's chalky and too sweet, and you have to learn to expect a solid mass of undercooked boba somewhere in your drink. A friend of mine in college dubbed this phenomenon the "boba blockage." Doesn't that sound appealing? It's okay. This is your typical mall food court Chinese food. Nothing special, but there is something about it that hits the spot when you are craving it. Sadly enough, it also might be the best Chinese food at Penn State. The food is great but the portions are really small for the price you pay. You will leave hungry and be out $7-8. You will get a much better deal at any of the downtown restaurants. Also, prepare for extremely long lines over the lunch hour. read more
