Since the 2 stars (which equates to the "[service] could've been better") were due to the unprofessionalism and inattentiveness shown (not due to her being an LDA), I have no reason to change my rating or delete my review. TL;DR: Marizen is NOT a lawyer. She is a Legal Document Assistant that cannot provide you with legal advice. She is a significantly affordable option for a Living Trust but she is unprofessional and has poor attention to detail-- key characteristics that are paramount to detailing an important document. Details: I left a Living Trust inquiry via her site and Marizen emailed me back within 1 day to "text" her back for a scheduled over-the-phone consult. Upon speaking with Marizen it was clear she did not take the time to review the few questions I had sent her in my initial inquiry as she was confused as to what the consult would primarily be regarding. Her rates were significantly less than what other competing services were offering which raised an orange flag for me. Upon further research, I realized Marizen was NOT a lawyer, but rather a "Legal Document Assistant (LDA)." According to the CA Attorney General, LDAs cannot give legal advice. This was my first encounter with an LDA, which allowed me the opportunity to do the necessary research to make a more educated investment. Had Marizen gotten back to me with the necessary next steps and questionnaire as she had promised (it's been over 1.5 weeks), I may have considered her as a possible option to complete my Living Trust needs. But if you are looking for a more affordable option, perhaps Marizen is a good fit for you.

She was incredibly professional and organized, asked great questions to tailor the process to our family's needs, and helpful in moving forward steps of the process we would not have even thought of. She gave clear guidance on future steps and tried to make the process seem less for future improvements for us. She provided timely deliverables and was punctual. Overall we would highly recommend working with her!

I was on the lookout for a new attorney to help me update a prior estate plan after getting married last year, having found my previous attorney well-informed, but not as communicative and articulate/descriptive as I would have liked for the answers I was seeking. I came across Jelena and several other attorneys through my legal insurance network, and after having had an initial chat with them all, found it pretty easy to move forward with her, having appreciated how well she communicated her ideas and suggestions, as well as the particular guidance path she recommended. A few forms and meetings later, my plan was done and updated, and seemingly (to my untrained legal eye) much more comprehensive than my prior one. After everything is complete, she'll send you docs that are easy to update as needed, as well as detailed instructions for any next steps needed to finish documenting/setting up your estate. Overall, she's a great attorney to work with, who's well-informed and willing to explain whatever you have questions about, but also very honest about when she doesn't know the answer to something, which she'll also quickly research and follow up with you on: something far more preferable than a professional that'd just pretend to know everything. Highly recommend!

In the midst of my heartbreak and trauma of losing my mother, I had to also defend my disabled sister from losing the family home our parents had intended for her. In my bleakest hour, I sought attorney referrals from friends, associates, the Bar Association, and anyone who would listen. I met with half dozen attorneys, who ranged from skilled but unconcerned, to concerned but unimpressive-- most of whom offered little hope for my situation. That all changed when I met Emilie Calhoun. After our first consultation, she had a firm grasp of my case, provided clear options before demanding any retainer, displayed trustworthy concern and extreme competence. I was immediately impressed that she always remembered every minute detail of my case, upon each visit, which is always an appreciated relief when dealing with legal matters. Ms. Calhoun represented us skillfully, and with favorable results. I can't recommend her enough, and can only say that to have her on your side is a blessing indeed.

I can count on one hand, however, the people I have met that constitute wonderful mentors, show a passion for the law, and are just all around good people. The definition of a fiduciary duty is this: the highest standard of care at either equity or law. A fiduciary is expected to be extremely loyal to the person to whom (s)he owes the duty (the "principal") and must not put his/her personal interests before the duty, and must not profit from this position as a fiduciary, unless the principal consents. Ms. Calhoun lives up to this definition and indeed walks the walk. I have seen her burn the candle at both ends to work for clients that cannot afford to pay for her services (more often than not) and she operates with the zeal, passion, temerity and compassion that supersedes even this definition. Personally, I am lucky to work for someone that I both admire and serves me as a mentor.
