They are now closed for the season but PA'PAs is legit. Nothing fancy-a trailer in a parking lot but they turn out some serious bbq. My favorite is the brisket sandwich. Better bring a fork as this gigantic sammy is not only large but also messy. Not only does the smoke shine through but the not too sweet, not too hot sauce compliments it perfectly. Comfort food at it's finest. It are establishments like these in Madison that keeps me on my toes to keep searching for those under the radar type of spots that seriously turn out some good eats.

That's me there, ordering brisket, about to have my life changed.

Oh man, what a welcome and unexpected surprise on our way just passing past Madison. What a frickin GEM. My friend asked, "What's on the brisket sandwich?" The reply: "Brisket, why, you need something else?" No, good sir, we needed not one thing else. The meat was smoked well, not overpowering, but flavorful. The sauce was so dang good. I love it with a little tang, and this was perfect. Portions of the brisket were a little tough -- not being a BBQ pro, not sure if that's regular, but that's the reason I didn't give this place a fifth star. And he let me try the banana pudding on the sly. Never had it before, may never have it again, but as far as appetizers go, I nearly ruined my appetite on the stuff. So good. This food truck, upon the grass at the edge of a gas station, is fine eating with good company. Thanks for making one of the fondest memories of our little road trip.

    Not good

First of all when I cook food for people I taste it, making sure the quality of it is good, and I want them to enjoy my food even if they don't come back I want them to say, good things about my food. I went to Papa John's yesterday in Delavan Wisconsin at the mobile gas station my son had rib tips there I tasted them, they weren't great but they were good so, I went there expecting at least some good rib tips however, they were nasty they were greasy fatty they were big, chunks of meat, the bean was mush, the potato salad is just big chunks of potato the cornbread is I don't know what this s*** is.the food was nasty I was so disappointed the first bite into the meat was greasey and it was like it had been in the freezer it was awful the food was awful it was awful and it had no seasoning I don't know what that is but it ended up in the garbage. it was horrible, I wouldn't recommend anybody go there not for the food anyway. The ribs tips I purchased was not good at all, they were greasy, fatty and meat tasted old,I took one bite,to be quiet honest it made me sick. It tasted like old freezer burn meat. I was only able to send this one image

True, hardwood, smoked BBQ right off an inconspicuous Broadway gas station is where you will find the best brisket in the area. The meal included a sweet/vinegar sauce that perfectly complemented the slow-cooked, smoke-infused offerings. Seriously - this stuff is the real deal. You just can't get this anywhere! For the sides I would recommend getting the coleslaw and the baked beans which have a unique peppery finish. You may have to plan your visit here as the are only open Monday, Wednesday, Friday, and Saturday around lunchtime...and this by no means is a strict schedule. If you see the smoke billowing - you should be stopping to place an order.

Great brisket sandwich. For the price you get a great portion, when she handed me the box I was shocked at how heavy it was! I was able to get two sandwiches out of it. Sauce was good...not to hot and not to spicy. Finding places like this is amazing and a must stop if driving down the belt line.

This has to be some of the best BBQ to move past my lips. Epic portions wonderful smells. The hush puppies and coleslaw were just as awesome as the rib tips. Next time I'm trying the catfish I almost was going to sit there till it was time for dinner

There was plenty left over. The food was delivered 21 minutes away, arriving exactly at the promised time, 100% complete, with some trays still too hot to touch. I included bread & supplies with the order, and the delivery included plenty of serving spoons & tongs, utensils, plates, & napkins. Brisket and sauce were fantastic. The chicken needs work--dry and low flavor. The hamburger buns were very bready and big, too big for many. The sides were fun and interesting new flavors. The slaw was tasty-tangy but very white--challenging those who like their vegetables green. Sorry folks. The beans were super popular. I would get them again, all of those sides. But the chicken...you might go in and taste-test it first. On the front end, it was so easy to arrange for this catering through the website and email. The communication was prompt and accurate. Changes, inquiries, and payment were handled seamlessly. I arranged for this food from long distance, and Beef&Butter really came through. It's a little more expensive than some other Madison options but in the end I was really happy to support this business and the people running it. I wish them great success in the future.

Sides were pretty good too. However, I have to say the brisket was a bit of a disappointment - it was way overcooked, like it had been smoked at too high of a temperature. It was edible but really dry. Just overcooked or held too long. Had to douse it in sauce to eat it which is a total shame. Would have been a 5 star rating if not for the brisket. I'd come back again, maybe when they were busier.

Online ordering was very easy and the food was ready right on time! We got the smoked pork shoulder sandwich platter with coleslaw and corn bread bites and the spicy chicken breast sandwich platter with baked beans and Mac & Cheese. The buns they use for these sandwiches are a great texture and hold up well to the amount of meat and sauce that you want on a BBQ sandwich. It never felt soggy, which is rare around the area. The pork was flavorful with a very fine shred. I wouldn't say the chicken was spicy as said on the menu, but more peppered. The real star is the bbq sauce because it comes out warm and is thin enough to pour but has enough texture to stick to the meat. Went well with everything from the meats, to the Mac & Cheese, to the corn bread bites. The corn bread bites were the stand out side, kind of like a hush puppy. Would recommend at least one person in your group gets them. I even liked them topped with the baked beans. Overall, very tasty food and nice people working. After hearing so many great things about this place over the years, it's about time I got there. Lived up to all the hype!

First I should say I judge a barbecue joint by its ribs. That's it. I have had barbecue all over…read morethe country and smoke a mean rib myself. These ribs were as good as any I've had around the country, and better than most. Some places brag about "fall of the bone tender." To me that is overcooked. Ribs should be "fairly easily coaxed off the bone tender. The need a little bit of chew to them or the are too dry. Smokey Jon's ribs were just right. Now the rest. The barbecue beans were very good. I put a little brisket burnt ends in when I make them. That would have improved these to top notch. I usually shy away from barbecue joint mac and cheese but I ordered it here. Hey, I'm in Wisconsin. It's got to be at least ok. It was better than just ok. It had a generous amount of cheese and the symtickiness that good Mac and cheese must have. For my taste, it had too much garlic. I'm a big garlic fan. When I see a recipe that says "one clove of garlic," I figure it's a misprint and they meant "one head of garlic." Here, they used powdered garlic, and I feel like the amount they used covered up the natural sweetness of the cheese. The ambiance of the place was spot on. I am visiting Madison, from Oregon (Go Ducks!) Driving by the place it looks like they've got to have at least passible 'cue. Inside it was classic back woods barbecue chic. "Log cabin" looking interior walls, red and white checkered plastic table cloths, and great old school blues on the sound system. Is this place perfect? No, won't get that until you pass through the Pearly Gates. But it's about as good as your going to get anywhere else, unless you come over to my back yard on 4th of July.

The place had a decent lunch crowd, but was by no means packed, so we figured it would be quick to get food for the kids. Our waitress came to get our drink order pretty quick, but then service slowed for receiving our drinks, ordering food, getting our food, and getting her attention for a to-go box and our bill. As for the food, we ordered the Bangor, which had shrimp and haddock and choice of two sides where we chose the corn muffins and beans. We also got the Nashville hot chicken sliders with sweet potato fries, kids chicken tenders, and kids burger with fries. The kids meals were both quite generous portions, especially the chicken tenders. The tenders were nice and juicy with a crisp exterior and one of the best things ordered. The kids burger was overly charred and had a little burnt taste, so the child wouldn't eat it and ended up eating the shrimp from the other meal instead. The Nashville hot sliders were decent sandwiches and quite large, but were by no means Nashville hot, more like somewhere between mild to medium spice. The sweet potato fries were great though and went well with their bbq sauces. The fish and shrimp received mixed reviews from the two people that ordered it. The corn muffins were definitely something that we would get again and also worked great with the bbq sauces. Overall, it was fine with some good and some not so good. The price is a little higher than some restaurants with similar offerings, but the portions are quite large, so maybe that's the tradeoff. Not sure if this is going to get added to our rotation, but they did seem to have some good happy hour deals, so maybe for that.
