Ordered rib plate with pawpaw sauce. Ribs- moist, smokey and flavorful Pawpaw sauce- tasty, too sweet for me Potato salad- good, needs a bit more seasoning (salt, pepper) and acid/tang (e.g., mustard, vinegar, pickle juice). Unfortunately, didn't hold a candle to my mom's potato salad, but I won't hold it agsinst them :) Baked beans- nice texture but too sweet for me. I am just not a sweet sauce lover. Texas toast- it wasn't toasted, just a thick slice of bread. Worked good to fold some meat, sauce and bread together to make a bite. Portion was large and could have served 2 people. Everyone working there, all senior citizens, were hard working, kind and friendly. Pawpaw was sitting out front and we chatted while I ate bbq at one of the picnic tables. Oh boy. Can't say enough good things about this place. We just bought a cabin in the area (3.2 miles away). One of our new neighbors told us about Papaw's. Is it ever good! The wife is the rib eater. She loved hers. She ate every bite and cleaned them to the bone. I had a pulled pork platter. The pork was moist and flavorful. They do not smother their meat in sauce to cover up dryness. They do give you a choice of sauces on the side. The hot is not really hot, IMO. But it was excellent. No fried food here, but no big deal. Mrs and I both had cole slaw which was absolutely wonderful - fresh and cold. Not swimming in liquid. Mrs had potato salad for her second side. I tried a bite and it was delicious. I had baked beans which I found to be excellent. They do have limited outdoor seating here. But I took ours to-go and brought it home. I can see us becoming regulars at Papaw's. read more

My boyfriend always ate here when we came down to the lake. I've finally decided to try it and it was really good! I wasn't a fan of the sides they have so I got the sandwich only. Stumbled upon this gem. The food was great. Try the nitro sauce if you like heat kick. The owners and workers are extremely friendly, informative, and fun. Oh my God! This is the absolute BEST BBQ I've ever had. It is like the filet mignon of pork, melted in my mouth! I live right down the road from Papaws but have only gone to the place next door. Had a hankering for BBQ but the other place was closed for 2 months so I thought I would give Papaw's a try. Really glad I did and here is my review. We ordered 1 lb brisket, 1 lb turkey, 1/2 rack of ribs, 1 quart Brunswick Stew, and a quart each of coleslaw and beans. Prices were reasonable. Brisket was excellent! Moist and had a good smoke flavor. Turkey was very good. Moist but could have used a little bit more smoke. Ribs were excellent! Moist and meaty with good smoke. Coleslaw was very good. Tasted homemade but not too sweet like some i've had. Beans were very good. Nice smoky taste. I didn't particularly like the Brunswick Stew but that could have been my personal taste. I prefer it to have a more liquid broth. This was thick ... think Brunswick grits and you'll get the idea .... A word about their sauces. I have my own sauce I use but gave Papaw's a try. I got hot and regular. Both of these sauces were outstanding so I never used my own. Conclusion is Papaw's is now my go to BBQ shack. read more

Really wanted to like this place but the pork was not smoky at all and was chewy. Maybe boiled? You order at a counter for take out or use a table at the nearby store. Sauces we're good, sides were OK, but a BBQ place that fails at pulled pork ain't worth your time. Good service for what it is. read more

I had a very good conversation with the owner before I bought any of the smoked meats that he had for sale. Very nice man and at first glance he seemed to understand about what it takes to smoke good meat. But during the conversation he stated that his meat was cooked in a Texas style and after eating it, it was no where near that type of BBQ. Within the state of Texas there are literally hundreds of BBQ restaurants (mom and pops and some chains) that compete with each other every day for the right to be called the best in Texas. Almost everybody I knew in Texas had some type of a smoker in the backyard, so you learn to cook meat at a young age. And I am not here to say that Texas BBQ is better then Georgia, Kansas City, St Louis, Memphis, N.C. etc. but if you make a statement that you cook in a Texas style then it should be somewhat close to it, but his wasn't.And a little side note within the state of Texas there is a battle within the state as to what is better (Central or East Texas style). I chose turkey, brisket and ribs knowing that for me pulled pork is one of the easiest meats to cook because of the fat and I would think that it would be tasty. All three meats had no seasoning and no smoked flavor( might be why they offer sauce).The brisket was tender but it lacked any smoke flavor, didn't notice much of a smoke ring around the meat either. The turkey was dry and flavorless, the ribs were dry also. I hate give such a bad review to such a nice man. At the end of the day he has 4.5 stars and the folks up here apparently like his food and wish him the best. read more

It was Thursday night at 5:45 pm. I had just arrived in Blairsville for a weeklong visit to our cabin home from our permanent home in Savannah. I had survived driving around Blood Mountain and was hungry. "I think I will stop for food at the bbq place on Nottely Dam Road on the way to the cabin." I thought to myself. So I was the last customer. I ordered 6 chicken wings, mild sweet sauce on the side and Southern hash which they described as hashed potatoes with onions and 3 types of meat. Okay, I chose that. I paid my $9, left a buck for a tip even at a take out restaurant, took my meal, got into my car and drive the 2 miles to the cabin. It smelled really good in the car making my anticipation even greater. Imagine my disappointment when I opened it to find not the 6 wing pieces but 5! "5??" I thought. "Can that boy not even count to 6?" "Well, maybe it was all they had. I will forgive it this time." Then I opened the container for the hash. Surprise again. It looked nothing like has and it did not look like what they described. It had a few potato chunks, and a few pieces of something that might have been chicken bouyed up when I gently stirred it with my spoon. "This must be Brunswick stew." I muttered. But if it was it might have come from Brunswick but it was not stew since it was weak and more resembled soup. So, for my $10 bucks, I got 5 wing pieces and a soupy rendition of Brunswick stew masquerading as Southern hash. The best part of the meal was the mild bbq sauce. Save your money and go next door to Dam Fine BBQ. At least you get what you pay for! read more

Meh. They were super friendly, but we just didn't like the food. My pulled pork sandwich tasted like it had been heated in the microwave. Very limited sides to choose from. My wife's brunswick stew looked coagulated. But they checked on us several times and even brought our son a popsicle. We ate in a side room that is currently in construction so there were nails and tools laying around.
