Serving the Elyria-Swansea and Globeville neighborhoods, The GrowHaus uses hydroponics and aquaphonics techniques to grow fresh and healthy vegetables for distribution to local residents and for sale to local grocery stores and restaurants. The greenhouse also hosts classes on gardening, cooking, nutrition and fitness and provides economic opportunities to the neighbors in the form of business development for food based small businesses. There are many ways to experience GrowHaus first-hand. It serves as the venue for the annual Harvest Week dinners, which I highly recommend. Free public tours are offered every Friday morning at 10:00 a.m. There is also a variety of volunteer opportunities on the business side of things in the way of marketing, communications, event planning, graphic design, and grant writing (most of the plant care and farm work is handled by interns, students and trainees). The GrowHaus is a 501(c) nonprofit organization that accepts cash donations and in-kind donations of tools, gardening supplies and office equipment. I love everything about The GrowHaus mission and wish them many years of continued success. I would love to see more urban farms pop up around the city.

I'm not a native but I got this tip from a native - her family has been coming here for decades to get their box of green chilis annually. It sometimes can be hit or miss if you come later in the day, they could sell out on popular, in-season produce. I love their garlic bulb braids, get the one that has slightly purple tint on them, they are garlicky spicy and last a long time - perfect for the grill then smeared on toasty bread. I also have gotten delicious Hinman Pie in their freezer section, gazillion flavors of cheese curds, lots of local pickled food and delicious hot sauces. Service has always been great if I didn't know how to pick a type of produce - I'd get my questions answered. Love all the local items and non local items will be labeled as well. Overall just a great place to come check out while supporting local business. Stop by Edward's Meats before or after Heinie's for meal prepping too. Oh btw Heinie's also do Fall Pumpkins set up for photo ops too if you have little ones. Come get a pumpkin and take some photos, and pick up some produce while you're at it!

The sign up is a very simple Google Forms on their website. You can choose from a small box or large box. Each box comes with approximately 6 fruits and 6 vegetables, give or take. Occasionally there's a package of moldy strawberries or the lettuce wilts quickly but that far outweighs the value and variety for the price. Their service is incredibly friendly and accommodating. They have a seamless system down for COVID where you drive up, pay, and they put your produce directly into your car. Awesome! Note that they only accept cash right now. They also have random local goods for sale that you can add on to your usual box. Some examples are honey, green chilis, bbq sauce, bacon and granola. 5280 Produce is a team of rockstars. Give them a shot! Once you start using them you won't forget the incredible value and service.

They have no physical location other than this fruit store on S. Federal Blvd. Plenty of parking. They offer first of season Colorado apricots &; peaches along with other fruits and veggies. I saw a large selection of jams, honey, relishes + frozen goods. I got apricots & peaches for $3.90/lb. Local grocery stores still have Californian peaches. The store is self serve. They accept credit/debit cards and cash. It looks like a fruit stand near the orchards with no extra decoration. They are open 6 days a week, Mon-Sat.

How it works: Producers set up to sell their products through the High Plains Food Coop site. Vendors sell a variety of items, from meats to eggs to vegetables to prepared items. Even things like soaps. It's all screened through the coop board. Producers must meet certain standards. Most meat producers use no hormones or antibiotics in the meats they sell. They are often smaller farms with high quality meats. Produce is generally not treated with pesticides and often grown under organic conditions. Producers are from the front range, Colorado, Wyoming, Nebraska and Kansas, I believe. Buyers: Anyone can be a buyer! You have to buy into the coop, I believe my buy in last year was $40 for an annual, non voting member. Next year I will certainly go in at the voting member rate. Then you shop. You shop during the first week and a half of the month (ordering closes the second Thursday of the month). There are exceptional values on grass fed beef packages, fantastic bacon, farm fresh eggs (from chickens that have never seen the inside of an industrial chicken farm, thank goodness), delicious vegetables and many other things to buy. I even bought my uncle a full body roasting pig for Christmas (long story). You can read about each producer as you're contemplating buying their wares. Once you've made your selections, you wait until the cycle closes. On the third Thursday of the month, between 4-6 pm, you go and collect your food. Payment is made either then, via check or before pickup, through Paypal. We've never had a problem with our shipment. Meats arrive frozen and packed in coolers. Eggs are in their cartons; we've never had one broken. Everything has been of the highest quality. We really like supporting local farmers and ranchers and we like that we know that the cattle have lived good lives (and died in humane ways, for that matter). That is very important to us. You do have to factor in the costs. The Share Fee ($40-$100) and then the 10% transportation and handling charges can add up. But when I do the math, I can get a beef package, hormone free, with both lean ground beef and roasts, for about $4.50 per pound. That's as good as you can get it at your local market and a darned bit less expensive than at Whole Paycheck. And you are sure where everything is coming from. Something to think about.

I can't give HPFC five stars because the Park Slope Food Coop in Brooklyn is still "Woo Hoo As Good As It Gets" and "king of the mountain" of food coops that I have experienced. High Plains Food Coop could possibly surpass the Park Slope Food Coop if it: (1) adds more farmers who can supply organic veggies and fruits when in season, and (2) makes its supply consistent (sometimes it is out of items for a long period -- like now, it has been out of pork belly for a few months). This one in Golden is particularly nice, less crowded that others that I have been to such as pearl street. Located right in the middle of Golden next to Clear Creek and the Golden History Musuem. It has lots of variety with the classic fruit and vegetable vendors, to coffee, bread, flowers, salsas, and jewelry. Some of the things that I got while at the farmers market were a white chocolate eclipse iced coffee from astro coffee, cheese bread from Bruna's since my son in particular loves Brazilian food since we used to have nanny from Brazil, some palisade peaches, a berry cheesecake pastry, a lemonade, some syrup from Daddy's Homemade Syrup, and a pesto and buffalo sauce from not bad cooks. (And we definitely could have done more damage here.) Definitely recommend adding this to your itinerary for Golden. We had such a nice day here starting with the market.
