I've had the chance to visit the GrowHaus for a tour and during Harvest Week for many years. It's an amazing grocery and I also love the education they are putting back into the community. Education, kind and eager staff, good food. What makes GrowHaus give stars really is the community aspect. A nonprofit that is meant to nourish its surrounding community. Literally just across the tracks, in an industrial neighborhood without a grocery store, sits the urban farm The GrowHaus. Serving the Elyria-Swansea and Globeville neighborhoods, The GrowHaus uses hydroponics and aquaphonics techniques to grow fresh and healthy vegetables for distribution to local residents and for sale to local grocery stores and restaurants. The greenhouse also hosts classes on gardening, cooking, nutrition and fitness and provides economic opportunities to the neighbors in the form of business development for food based small businesses. There are many ways to experience GrowHaus first-hand. It serves as the venue for the annual Harvest Week dinners, which I highly recommend. Free public tours are offered every Friday morning at 10:00 a.m. There is also a variety of volunteer opportunities on the business side of things in the way of marketing, communications, event planning, graphic design, and grant writing (most of the plant care and farm work is handled by interns, students and trainees). The GrowHaus is a 501(c) nonprofit organization that accepts cash donations and in-kind donations of tools, gardening supplies and office equipment. I love everything about The GrowHaus mission and wish them many years of continued success. I would love to see more urban farms pop up around the city. read more

My first visit to the GrowHaus was a Yelp On The Farm, Off the Hook Dinner and it was a great experience to sit in the greenhouse and enjoy a multi-course dinner made with local produce and animals. That is where I found out about the Food Box Program. The Food Box Program is fantastic. For $20/week (or less when you purchase multiple weeks in advance), I get all of my produce, bread and eggs. They have a slightly more expensive option for a weekly family-size box. It's all local, seasonal and very fresh. I love that you can "swap" any items from your weekly offering that you do not want for stuff you do. And, you get a recipe you can use to prepare some of your box items. The Red Kuri Squash & Persimmon Soup was incredible! Not only are you supporting local farms in the area, you are eating a variety of seasonal fruits and veggies and getting creative with how to prepare foods you are not used to buying at the grocery store, for a fraction of the price of grocery store produce. It's been a great experience and I will be getting their food boxes for the foreseeable future. read more

What an incredibly organization! I have been enjoying their greenhouse events for yearsbut it wasn't until I had a newborn in March during covid that I signed up for their boxes. They have been a LIFE SAVER! They include fresh local eggs and produce, amazing bread and even other pantry staples. I have only needed to order groceries twice in 5 months thanks to their delivery. I just wanted to say thank you for helping this little family out during a difficult summer. The GrowHaus is a homegrown nonprofit that is trying alleviate the problem of "Food Deserts" and malnutrition in under-served communities. It was conceived, and is staffed, but some of the hardest-working, smart and community-orientated people around! They work to teach people about permaculture, horticulture and sustainable urban farming. The GrowHaus is also working to provide local residents with healthy eating choices, as well as living-wage employment. From their website, these are their areas of work: Grow - We grow food in our facilities using a variety of replicable materials and methods, including aquaponics, worm composting, self-watering containers and microgreens. Sell - in 2011, we will begin distributing food through our farmstand, as well as by selling to likeminded restaurants such as SAME Cafe. What an incredible business! I was lucky enough to attend a Tentiko Aquaponics event with Growhaus and could not be more impressed with this business. They have set up shop in a true food desert. The Swansea neighborhood has never had a business like GrowHaus and I can already tell it is slowly shaping the community with it's "pay what you can" market and community classes and events. The Aquaponics and Hydroponics greenhouses are truly fascinating and I highly recommend anyone who is interested in the future of agriculture to check them out. This is the way to sustainable healthy produce, yet so few people are aware of it. They offer everything from Beginniner's classes to Advanced Aquaponics systems creation. Love, love, love this concept! GrowHaus is just that--a greenhouse growing a variety of food options using aquaponics. My husband happens to be obsessed with this concept-and they've got it down! A great source of inspiration! Go check out their free tours on Friday and Saturdays at 10 am. I was told about their food box program by a friend quite some time ago, and then my husband noticed a flier about it at his crossfit gym. So, we finally decided to stop lolly gagging and give it a go! For 20 bucks a week (or less if you buy additional weeks all at once), you get eggs, bread, produce, and some other local options. Enough for two people--and you can upgrade to a family size box if that works better for you and yours. The quality was amazing, and it all came from their greenhouses or a local spot in Colorado. Love it. Plus, they provided a recipe option for the included collard greens. Much appreciated! The best part?! This is a volunteer driven program that educates the surrounding community about nutrition, while providing to those in need. The building is pretty run down, and they need to tidy it up inside and get it more organized...but there's so much love here that you can't help but be inspired. read more
