How it works: Producers set up to sell their products through the High Plains Food Coop site. Vendors sell a variety of items, from meats to eggs to vegetables to prepared items. Even things like soaps. It's all screened through the coop board. Producers must meet certain standards. Most meat producers use no hormones or antibiotics in the meats they sell. They are often smaller farms with high quality meats. Produce is generally not treated with pesticides and often grown under organic conditions. Producers are from the front range, Colorado, Wyoming, Nebraska and Kansas, I believe. Buyers: Anyone can be a buyer! You have to buy into the coop, I believe my buy in last year was $40 for an annual, non voting member. Next year I will certainly go in at the voting member rate. Then you shop. You shop during the first week and a half of the month (ordering closes the second Thursday of the month). There are exceptional values on grass fed beef packages, fantastic bacon, farm fresh eggs (from chickens that have never seen the inside of an industrial chicken farm, thank goodness), delicious vegetables and many other things to buy. I even bought my uncle a full body roasting pig for Christmas (long story). You can read about each producer as you're contemplating buying their wares. Once you've made your selections, you wait until the cycle closes. On the third Thursday of the month, between 4-6 pm, you go and collect your food. Payment is made either then, via check or before pickup, through Paypal. We've never had a problem with our shipment. Meats arrive frozen and packed in coolers. Eggs are in their cartons; we've never had one broken. Everything has been of the highest quality. We really like supporting local farmers and ranchers and we like that we know that the cattle have lived good lives (and died in humane ways, for that matter). That is very important to us. You do have to factor in the costs. The Share Fee ($40-$100) and then the 10% transportation and handling charges can add up. But when I do the math, I can get a beef package, hormone free, with both lean ground beef and roasts, for about $4.50 per pound. That's as good as you can get it at your local market and a darned bit less expensive than at Whole Paycheck. And you are sure where everything is coming from. Something to think about.

You can buy any cut of meat you can dream of and much more (pies, breads, soap, laundry detergent) from regional family farms from the comfort of your computer and have it delivered to a location near you once a month. I can't give HPFC five stars because the Park Slope Food Coop in Brooklyn is still "Woo Hoo As Good As It Gets" and "king of the mountain" of food coops that I have experienced. High Plains Food Coop could possibly surpass the Park Slope Food Coop if it: (1) adds more farmers who can supply organic veggies and fruits when in season, and (2) makes its supply consistent (sometimes it is out of items for a long period -- like now, it has been out of pork belly for a few months). Serving the Elyria-Swansea and Globeville neighborhoods, The GrowHaus uses hydroponics and aquaphonics techniques to grow fresh and healthy vegetables for distribution to local residents and for sale to local grocery stores and restaurants. The greenhouse also hosts classes on gardening, cooking, nutrition and fitness and provides economic opportunities to the neighbors in the form of business development for food based small businesses. There are many ways to experience GrowHaus first-hand. It serves as the venue for the annual Harvest Week dinners, which I highly recommend. Free public tours are offered every Friday morning at 10:00 a.m. There is also a variety of volunteer opportunities on the business side of things in the way of marketing, communications, event planning, graphic design, and grant writing (most of the plant care and farm work is handled by interns, students and trainees). The GrowHaus is a 501(c) nonprofit organization that accepts cash donations and in-kind donations of tools, gardening supplies and office equipment. I love everything about The GrowHaus mission and wish them many years of continued success. I would love to see more urban farms pop up around the city.

I discovered them one Sunday at the Central Park (Founder's Green) Farmer's Market - 29th & Roslyn (8:30AM -12:30PM). At Founder's Green look for the yellow tents & big white truck every week, rain or shine thru about mid-October. I was told they've been at that same spot for 20 years. The produce looks like it could appear on a Food Magazine cover! It's beautiful. Everything is bigger, brighter & better than what you'd find in the grocery aisles. Over the weeks I've tried many of the veggies & fruits, sometimes they have yummy samples. The two owners ( I think they are the owners), are there each week - one helps customers with the produce & the other weighs & takes payment. They're friendly & super helpful. They've given tips on microwaving corn on the cob & offering to cut off the very long tops of carrots. Speaking of corn....if you're a corn lover their Peaches & Cream Corn on the Cob is definitely worth getting, so fresh & sweet. Palizzi Farms Produce is the best!

We ventured here today and here are the major takeaways! ++ The market operates each Saturday - starting 2 May 2026 - October 2026, from 9AM - 1PM! ++ The layout of the market is both spacious, yet intimate, operating in the adjacent space to Kunsmiller Creative Arts Academy and parking lot. About 30 booths were set up, inviting guests to stop by at their leisure along the created path. Up the stairs near the back of the market, leads to the renovated playground and blacktop area, which was filled with umbrellas, tables and chairs for dining, conversing or listening to the live music! ++ Come early! I feel like arriving early is essential to any market, but this definitely fills up fast with families, kiddos, hungry foodies and shoppers alike!We arrived around 1130 ish and there were a few booths that were already sold out of their items! ++ Be prepared to park and walk! Street parking is the primary parking available - with majority in the surrounding neighborhoods. When you see an open spot, snag it, park and walk! ++ This is truly the "foodie" market! The majority of booths focus on selling freshly made goodies or whipping up a meal - made to order! Breakfast sandwiches, coffee and matcha carts, fresh fruit popsicles, bbq barbacoa tacos, pizza by the slice or flatbread (cooked in the portable pizza oven!), pastries and more! For my husband's birthday last weekend, I booked us each a 55 minute api-therapy appointment. We were in our individual huts and the experience was amazing!! Being beekeepers ourselves, we have a great love for bees and completely understand their importance and benefits that they bring to the world. The huts are very cozy and you're provided clean towels if you choose to rest your head on a pillow. While this seems the best way to lay in the hut, you really cannot hear the bees. They provide a face cradle so you can lay on your stomach and that worked so much better. I put my nose between the cedar planks so that I could inhale so much more of the hive air and I cannot tell you how much I absolutely love the smell of wood combined with the scent of honey and honeycomb! Don't worry, the bees cannot get to you as there is a wire mesh to keep them separate from you. Since there is a sliver of light coming through the hive side, you can watch the bees working. The huts themselves are bright and full of light. I fell asleep probably within 5 minutes after I adjusted myself and slept for about 40 minutes. To me, the collective of bees sounded like rushing water once you listen past the single, higher pitched buzzes. We both felt completely relaxed and refreshed afterward. I suggest everyone to give api-therapy a try!!

A little north of Eldorado Canyon State Park, this Walker Ranch Park with several different…read moretrailheads are tucked in as if they never want to be discovered by anyone. How I found this hidden gem was solely based on the luck I had today. I simply wanted to go on a hike where I would avoid other people. And this place is exactly that (or I picked the right day with very few hikers and bikers.) Cloudy Sunday afternoon, the temperature was in its upper 60's. When I got to the Ethel Harrold trailhead, there were only two other cars parked. And this is a very small trailhead (just so you know.) This Walker Ranch loop is a loop but it's QUITE lengthy. if you take the whole loop, it'll eventually take you to Eldorado State Park. I didn't go that far as I started late (past 2pm.) I took the right turn simply based on my instinct when the trail split on the way. If you take the right turn, you'll come to a very tiny (mini) cascade to your left. There is a good elevation gain so it's a great trail to get your cardio going. I occasionally jogged where the trail wasn't so steep. When I reached this vantage point where there was a bench, I made a u turn to come back to where I started. But the view at that vantage point was absolutely breathtaking. During this time (mid June), all kind of colorful wildflowers decorate both sides of the trail so you'll have ample opportunities for photo taking. I'd say it's beginner and family friendly especially the first mile or two. Since I didn't get to see the rest of the trail, I can't really speak for the rest of it, however. If it gets too difficult for you, you can always make a u turn.
