First of all, I've looked forward to this for about four years, so I had it really built up in my mind! I was super happy that they have a parking lot with ample parking. I got there in time for an early dinner and we got a table right away. Our server was prompt and kept our water glasses full. We all ordered sandwiches. Mine was the Hella Portabella. I loved the toasted roll that it was served on, and the plentiful mushroom and cheese inside. The sauce was also yummy. I ordered the sweet potato fries, which cost an additional couple of bucks, which I found annoying. They were good, and I got more food on my plate than I could finish. So much to look at, interesting and quirky. Based on the empty plates of my fellow diners, I think it's safe to say we all enjoyed our food. Normally I LOVE going here. I take all Baltimore newbies here. I go early, mid day, or late night. It's always good and reliable food. Except! For June 3. I went with a friend who has always wanted to go to PM. That day the service was really bad. The guys they had working were either stoned or just too tired to function or weren't paying attention. The server didn't write down our order, then forgot, then upon confirmation still got it wrong. When we left I payed for my meal in full and gave a tip that reflected my experience but that still said "maybe you were just having a bad day." A week went by and I noticed on my bank statement that they charged me $10 more than what I had written on my receipt. I disputed it with my bank and it was refunded, but please pay attention next time dude. Or paper moon- pay attention to your servers. That day was particularly bad. read more

The food was okay. The staff that I met was very friendly and accommodating. The place did have a weird smell and I couldn't tell what it was but it wasn't mold, it was just odd. Some people would say that the decor is charming, in my opinion it was a little offputting and weird. Fair warning to anyone with a fear of dolls (my mother has this phobia), DO NOT GO HERE IF YOU FEAR DOLLS. I promise you will be creeped out. I still enjoy Papermoon and it's always going to be an old standby. I've been going for the last ten years, and the food is actually really good. You can eat vegan there and eat well. However, I share a lot of the same complaints folks here do. Standing in the freezing vestibule forever waiting on a table is weird and kind of sucks, they don't do carry out anymore, there's a $10 minimum - it seems like that huge list of rules has only increased with its nit-pickiness over the years. I love the service there (awesome staff!) the food is good and the decor is cool, but whatever decisions management seems to be making are talked about in the community. Half a dozen people told me "Papermoon sucks now, don't go there" and I have to say that while I don't agree it sucks, I understand why people are telling me that. This will be a once in a while thing for us, and I think once in a while is probably all. read more

Papermoon Diner is another one of those places I've been going for years and never bothered to review. When I lived in Baltimore I ate here pretty regularly, even when I moved out of the neighborhood. Even now I make sure to eat at least one meal here on every visit to Baltimore. This is definitely one of those quirky places that only exist in cities like Baltimore. It's always on my to-do list with out of town visitors. The food is stellar. High quality ingredients executed beautifully. The children love the decor, older folks enjoy the novelty of the interesting decorations, and I love the high quality, unpretentious food. If you live in Baltimore, or are visiting, and haven't tried Papermoon Diner yet, then you're missing out! read more

The decor here is definitely fun, but it's also very dirty and dusty. They should really pay someone to clean it because it's kind of gross to eat in such a dirty establishment. The food is sub-par and overpriced. Hell, they aren't even open 24 hours anymore. The service is DREADFUL. You never have the same server throughout the meal and it's nearly impossible to get refills on coffee, soda, etc. Also, they won't split checks. They serve packets of syrup and honey mustard, like it's IHOP or something, but then they charge you like you're eating at Miss Shirley's or some other, better breakfast establishment. Since they stopped being one of the only 24 joints in the city, I've stopped going. It was fine when it was 4am and the only option, but now, when it's 10pm and I still haven't eaten dinner, I'll go to the Dizz instead. read more

This is really a love or hate it type of place, and unfortunately I'm in the latter group. Until semi-recently it was open 24 hours, which is pretty rare in the northern part of Baltimore. Even though their food was never great, I loved going into a PACKED place at 3 AM with friends. Once they cut their hours though, I haven't seen a reason to go back. The food itself is nothing special, okay at best. For the price, not worth it. Breakfast food is your best bet, but again, it's nothing I couldn't make myself. As lots of reviewers have noted, service is awful. The staff is actually full of nice people, but they just don't pay attention to you. Paper Moon doesn't assign tables to it's staff members, so anyone walking by is your waiter. While that in theory may be better for a busy environment, it just doesn't work here. I've sat for 30+ minutes before waiting to order, or get a refill on my drink. It's a shame, as it really is a very eclectic and cool place. Extremely disappointed by the service here. We came with a large party and were expecting to wait for a table, totally not a problem. They said there was a large table finishing up and it would be 35-40 minutes, totally cool with us. They call us and direct us to 2 separate tables which could have easily been put together, but it was against policy and there was nothing else they can do.. ok. We asked if they could possibly move another patron to a different open table so they could all sit together. At this, one of the employees with glasses, a black beanie and mustache snapped and he later ignored my sister as she spoke to him. As the other patron cleared, they didn't offer to quickly buss the table and move us all together. At the end of our meal, they moved together 3 tables to sit another party of 8. Ridiculous, made no effort to accommodate our concerns, and they clearly don't care about customer satisfaction. Never coming again. Only refilled water once and didn't ask if we wanted to take anything to go. read more

I wouldn't say that the Papermoon Diner is awful, but it's nothing great either. When we arrived at the Papermoon Diner we used their parking lot. The restaurant appears to be on the cusp of a bad neighborhood. Their lot is across the street and is fenced off with barbed wire (not the ideal ambiance for a night out). I suppose a perk is that the parking is free (This is indicative of the central theme of this review that the establishment is neither bad nor good). The restaurant certainly cannot be accused of lacking personality. Miscellaneous items fill the interior and the walls are colored with vibrant non matching paints. You can order breakfast/lunch at anytime -- we went in the morning and decided to get burgers. The menu is expansive and has something for everyone, but nothing really jumped out at me like "Hey I have to have that it sounds amazing." The ingredients and items are pretty vanilla. I ordered the "David's Whole Lotta Burger." I wasn't asked how I would like it cooked -- I believe they just make everyone's well done. My burger was pretty bland, but cooked properly. The portion size was gigantic. The fries that came with it appeared to be those snack stand generic frozen fries -- nothing special and nothing worth going out of your way for. The waiter who was helping us that morning was neither good nor bad, he was pretty void of charisma (odd given the appearance of the restaurant) but wasn't rude or anything like that. LoML and I returned here because I desperately wanted a bacon milkshake for some reason. I was celebrating a recent good happening and wanted to go to Nak Won for some good Korean (which we did), then hit this place up for the milkshake. LoML wasn't as keen on the idea, as he didn't like this place the first time we were here, but was amenable - so we came by. This place has, quite simply, seen better days. I was shocked at how desolate it seemed on a Friday night - there was a time where you had to wait in line for hours to get in here, ESPECIALLY on a weekend. Not so anymore. No line, no nothing. We walked in and were seated immediately. After studying the menu, LoML suddenly pointed out that there is a MINIMUM charge of 10 dollars per person - say what? Let me look at that? He points to the menu - well, damn, he's right. Two milkshakes are going to be twelve bucks maximum TOTAL. We'd just eaten at Nak Won, so we didn't want anything else. What now? We contemplated leaving, but decided to take a chance and ask if we could just purchase the shakes. The server agreed - must be hard times at Papermoon if they're willing to relax the menu rules. My, my. LoML gets a "chunky monkey" shake, I get my bacon maple. Okay, here we go, this is the only reason why I came back to this place... I sip it. The sugar overload is making me feel... uneasy. A quarter of the way down, and my mouth was recoiling from the taste... could this actually be too sweet? (Reminder: I'm a diabetic, so normally I can't partake of things like this. I'd already determined that I was going to take a BIG bolus when I got home.) Halfway through the shake.... oh, ugh. I feel like I'm going to be sick. But it's six bucks, and I wanted it, so I bravely push on. Three quarters down, and I wasn't feeling sick - I WAS sick. I couldn't finish it. I couldn't even LOOK at it. We paid and left - we actually got the check pretty quickly this time, but then... it was only two milkshakes, wasn't it? I thought I was going to upchuck in the car. No more bacon milkshakes. Ever. I went home, took my bolus, and went to bed. Didn't even bother testing. And so, the sole reason why I would come back to Papermoon is now gone forever. I cannot in good faith give this place less than three stars - I couldn't finish the food, but that's on me. It's just nothing special anymore. It's definitely no longer the "hottest" joint in town. Papermoon is a concept that is stuck in my 1993 mind... and just like Nirvana, bulletin board systems, and Beanie Babies, it should probably STAY in 1993. Tip for Diabetics: They do have things here that diabetics can eat - mainly salads and some of their breakfast items - but honestly, it's nothing that you can't probably fix at home for a lot less money. I first went to Papermoon four years ago and walking up to the restaurant, I hardly knew what to expect. Their eclectic sculptures and art all around can seem intimidating, but don't let it scare you away. The food here is fantastic. Their menu is very large and a little overwhelming. Everything I've has there has been great, but in particular I think they excel at breakfast and lunch food. However, I'd be careful if you're looking to brunch here since the line can get at least an hour long, and there's no way to make a reservation. Luckily, there are ample places to sit on the porch while you peruse the expansive menu. Once you get inside, the service is always very solid. Despite what they say on the menu, you can definitely split checks--you just pay up front at the register. When I come here for breakfast food, I always go for the vanilla custard French toast, which never disappoints. It's very sweet, with blueberries and powdered sugar on top of the custard on top of the toast, and very filling as well. If you're in the mood for lunch food, then their burgers are also top notch, and they have those really tasty thin French fries in the fast food style. And of course, get a sweet tea. I know I'm not from the deep South but I still approve of the sweet tea here. If you're not already full, then go for a milkshake for dessert. They're large and the chefs get creative with the flavors; the last one I had was a chocolate chip cake milkshake. read more

The food is good. The grits are wonderful; the veg options are plentiful and breakfast there is very satisfying. Unfortunately there's a hugely long wait for these comforts; even if you're seated right away. The staff are attentive but overworked and so understandably uncheerful. What really grates on me and makes my experiences with Paper Moon overall negative is the fucking rules. Opening the menu to find a swathe of arbitrary restrictions is unsettling from the outset and does not a comfortable dining experience make. The ridiculous, unorthodox appearance of the place stands opposed to the silly little caveats outlined for every guest: there's a minimum dollar amount per person, a plate-splitting fee, auto grat on parties of 5+, and no balloons if it's your birthday. I don't care how good the tofu scramble is, it's soured by too bizarre an atmosphere and makes what would otherwise be a fun and delicious establishment kind of meh. read more

It's been a few weeks since our visit, and for me it had been about 15 years since my last visit. A few things I noticed that had changed include the lack of mismatched chairs at every table, and quite a sturdy upgrade on the menus while still being very quirky. The parking lot is a great convenience. The special that day was supposed to be some sort of Japanese stew, but they were out of it when I inquired about it. Ended up instead with a burger, which was still pretty tasty. Boyfriend had an egg white omelet with salmon & enjoyed it all. The service was okay... But I think we only had human contact for a combined total of 2 minutes during our stay, spread out between three interactions. Taking the order, bringing the food, checking back once. It didn't seem particularly busy, seeing as it was a Wednesday night near closing time. I'm guessing they were off doing side work during the dry spells we didn't see them. Of course, the main draw I think is the crazy atmosphere and decor... but it's just begging to be stared at. Way too expensive for what it is...a late night diner in a crappy area with a college student and hamden crowd. Well, I stumbled into this place kind of by accident, after a night of drinking with some coworkers...we decided to take out our order(maybe that's a punishment?) I got the southern love burger...kind of an oxymoron. Either that or they got my order completely wrong. there was about 15 french fries in the box, It didn't have the pulled pork on it like the menu promised, and it was fucking 12 dollars. For 12 dollars I either expect a SLAMMIN burger with a shitload of fries, or at least a really cute waitress's phone number included in the box. This had neither. I've had better burgers for 6 dollars...it wasn't terrible...just left me wanting more. Annoying point: the cash register declined both my Visa gift card and my debit card, both of which had more than enough funds to cover the overly expensive underachieved meal...making me resort to cash. OK now for a few fun points...the decor is like the inside of a 12 year old kid with ADHD's mind while he's on an eightball of cocaine. Speaking of cocaine, I'm almost positive that the guy who took my order was high as BALLS. And I don't mean that he smoked a doobie. I mean this guy was literally tweaked outta his mind...his eyeballs were bigger than this bullshit burger they served me, which by the way took over 20 minutes to get to me. The ONLY upside of this place was there was a lot of really cute girls in there, and the social experience was pretty cool...but then again, I was also kind of drunk, and I'm a fun drunk. The Paper Moon has likely the craziest decor in Baltimore. Plastic figurines form the wig of a lime green mannequin. That's just the beginning! Hundreds of Pez dispensers greet you at the entrance. The wait staff and chefs are a collective. You might be waited in by several people during the meal. It was super crowded today. It took a while to get a table of 5 so to cut the wait time they offered us two tables near each other, which we accepted. The food was generally good. I had the large Caesar salad (2 stars of 5), which was of fair quality (I've had better). The onion rings were good (3 stars). My mom liked her plentiful Cobb salad. My husband enjoyed his BBQ Chicken Wrap. I've had very good meals at the Paper Moon before, so I won't let the Caesar salad deter me from returning. If you're in a hurry, don't come at peak times as there was still a crowd waiting sometimes 30 minutes to get a table. That says something good about the place. During the week it's much easier to get a table. Try it and make your own judgment, and enjoy the crazy ambience. read more

I went with a friend for Sunday brunch, arriving around 9:30. We thought we were going to beat the AM rush but at Paper Moon it starts earlier than other local restaurants. We were told our wait would be 20 minutes but it was actually almost 30. It was a nice morning so we waited on the back patio. Once seated, our wait to get our food was 1 hr! I finally asked the waitress and they had misplaced our order. They ending up comping our food, which was a nice gesture. I had the blueberry and cream cheese-stuffed French toast, which was only ok. I was glad it was free because I really don't think it was worth $10. It didn't even come with any sides for that price. The decor of the restaurant was a little creepy in my opinion - there were old dolls all over. From the outside, it is cute and colorful so I guess I was expecting a homier feel. There are definitely better brunch options in Baltimore so I don't plan to return any time soon. read more

Good: The menu is always promising, parking is easy and the environment is appealing and laid back, generally what you want from a late night diner. Bad: I am doomed to go back to the paper moon once every three years which is how long it takes for me to forget my last experience there. A fun, funky whimsical place. Each menu is hand made, numbered and dated. Lots to look at so lots of families for the kids to play I-Spy. Only my first time but my cheeseburger was large, cooked properly and delish. The onion rings were golden, hot and fresh. I ate every single one and wanted more but that i would burst. The other gimick here is that every staff person waits on you. One may take your drink order and other your food and someone else will check on you. It works - at least the day i went. They split tips equally. This place works great for carnivores, vegetarians and vegans. One of dining companions loved the sunflower bread - said it was the best. NOT GOOD FOR KIDS! not family friendly. I saw that there was a no stroller policy and totally understood that space was limited. However, I wasn't aware of their BABIES AREN'T ALLOWED FK CRY POLICY. My one year old was happily playing in my lap while we were waiting to put our order in. Every now and then she would let out a happy squeal. She wasn't screaming or crying. Another toddler across from us was doing the same. The owner, I assumed, came up to me at the table and explained that I should try to make sure she didn't cry. (WTF!?) she said it would be disturbing to the other patrons. Even as the other toddler across from us babbled happily and yes a little loudly, she cried and jumped as if the sound of a baby cooing was like nails on a chalkboard. I would have never came if I knew. I didn't see any such message on the restaurant signage. I then flipped to the back of the menu and sure enough there's their no crying babies policy. Wow! My friends and I decided to just take our food to go since we placed our order. O wait! You can't do to go! You have to order your food and then ask for a box. Whatever. Honestly if you want a review of the food: it was just ok. I had the breakfast quesadilla which I could have made at home and my friends had the fresh egg. Wow, where to start. I have been to this amazing restaurant at least a dozen times and have reviewed this on Google before, but this time deserves Yelp. Got there today with my wife around 2:30 PM, and they were slammed, which is fine. I've been here whole busy and only have been there on an average of 45 minutes. We'll get to that later. We ordered everything at once because, working in the business for many years we knew to order it all. We ordered the crab Mac n cheese for app, my wife ordered the veggie powerhouse sandwich and I ordered a Patty melt. Let me go on record that the ONLY reason this review got 3 stars was because of the amazing, beautiful dish that was the crab Mac n cheese. Blew my mind. Best Mac n cheese I ever had in my life. Patty melt and powerhouse sandwich came and instantly, I smelled something off. I took a bite and knew that the meat from the burger was rancid. This is truly disgusting, but the worst part was that I gave it to the waitress and said its rancid, and I'm not eating it. We received the bill and I was shocked to see that we were charged for the patty melt. I told the now waiter that I sent that dish back and I will NOT be paying for it. He, of course, apologized once and removed the patty melt from the bill. Problem: we were there for an hour and a freaking half. I was served rancid meat. We had literally 4 different servers. My wife should have had a side of fries and we were only given one side. They did not remove the disgusting, rancid dish from the bill until I complained a SECOND time. Awesome: Mac n cheese. Unfortunately, I grew up in Remington and know the history of this restaurant, but something has changed in the last year. After one too many drinks during the Baltimore Music Conference a friend and I needed to eat before making the long trek back to DC. Fortunately for me he new of Papermoon. Well the night was saved since this 24 hour veggie friendly diner was just what we needed. The eclectic diner menu was so overwhelming as it was a book. I really don't like long menus but hey it's a diner. So I just opted for my usually monte cristo sandwhich. Well I was quite surprised. Somehow they mangaged to make the french toast taste like yellow cake. I still can't figure out if that was good or bad. It was tasty but I was expected a french toast flavor and not yellow cake. The service was pretty decent. The place is so large that upon exit, we realized that the group of friends we were with earlier in the night were on the other side of the dining room. read more

"This place reminds me of that demented kid's room from Toy story," whispered one of my dining companions as we sat down. Located near the Baltimore Museum of Art, Papermoon Café walks a fine line between creepy and eccentric, and I personally think it's creepy. The décor is a collection of someone's old basement toys but arranged in an unusual way. For instance, right above our table are plastic dolls pasted on the walls, but some dolls have 4 heads, missing limbs, etc. There is a life-size mannequin in the bathroom, which may be a show to those caught unawares. There's something disconcerting about eating with a dismembered stuffed animal head looking down at you. Our party may have been in the minority that got creeped out by the décor since there were several families dining in relative serenity. If you can overlook the environment, PMC has some things going for it. My friend's crabcake dish had some acceptable crabcakes, most of it wispy crab and not much filler. PMC has an extensive menu, all items with the typical American bent. I opted for the omelets, which all come with interesting fillings, such as avocado and bacon. The choice of bread included challah and sunflower, which was definitely a refreshing difference. Sadly, the omelet was so packed with avocado that for he first time, I realized there really is such a thing as too much avocado (which I normally love). The average food and atmosphere coupled with slightly steep prices makes it difficult for me to want to return. read more

There are so many pros and cons here. First, this diner is a bright spot in an otherwise blighted area, just blocks away from hundreds of abandoned row houses. The decorations here are famous, but becoming dusty and broken. There is wait for breakfast, even if you call and they say no wait, expect 25 minutes (the regulars in the vestibule time it). The food is good but not outstanding. Large portions, and a great caramel milkshake. The prices are higher than you'd expect on this area ($14 for an omelet, but it had lots of smoked salmon- maybe too much actually). Go here just to say you did, it's pretty neat. read more

First off there are some positives about Papermoon Diner, namely the number of vegetarian options and the close-to-work location. However the restrictions, service, and prices make it increasingly unlikely that I'll go back. I went with a group of 5 on a Thursday for a late lunch and after being told it would be a 5 minutes wait we finally got a table after closer to 15 minutes - a table that had been open since we walked in. While there was a very large party in that same area, they had finished eating so there shouldn't have been an overlap issue. Once seated we quickly got our drink orders in and then spent a good 15 minutes waiting for the server to return. A few members of our group started eying the leftover scraps on the neighboring table, that's how long it took for food to show up! As I mentioned earlier the vegetarian options are plentiful, but the prices are not on par with the fare. I'm happy to pay $10+ for an in-house veggie burger but paying that for a Gardenburger which is about $4 for 4 at any grocery is insane. While it was nice to see that the smarypants burger was one of the few that came with fries, the quality and quantity of food did not match the price. The item I really wanted would have been closer to $20, that item being a grilled cheese sandwich with a portabello mushroom and sweet potato fries, an item I can make at home for closer to $5. Four of us ordered the Smartypants while the fifth member of our group went for a breakfast item - a breakfast item that came out way, way, way, wrong. It was at least quickly corrected, the only thing about the entire experience that was quick! While I can see the appeal of this place it's just not for me. A diner shouldn't have minimum prices, they should always allow carry-out, and service should be nice and quick. A lunch time visit to a diner should not take well over an hour, especially with 4 people are eating a reheated frozen veggie burger. The last time I was here I did not like it at all. The communication between hostess, waiters and chef really is mind boggling. I've waited over 30 minutes for two entrees. I specifically asked for no pork on my caprese sandwich and after 30 minutes.... Here came the waiter with a pork filled sandwich and after I returned it I had to wait another 10 minutes while my spouse had nearly finished her food. Once I mentioned my experience to the hostess she took no responsibility and blamed it on the kitchen staff. I said it was the waiters fault but she never acknowledged and at least apologized on behalf of the restaurant. Not coming back here. & the naked dolls stuck together everywhere is creepy! read more

Had a 20 minute wait for a seat, but once seated, our service was pretty good. Would have liked to have seen more regular refills of water though. We split the crab mac' n cheese which was stellar. I then got the uptown omelet. The bacon, mushrooms and spinach in it were great, but the goat cheese was too much. It really didn't enhance anything. I'd actually get it in the future and either ask for a different or no cheese at all. Also, the hash browns were pretty standard. All in all - a good meal at a fair price. read more

A wonderful little shop with interest for the eyes at every eclectic turn. My tomato, mozzarella and basil omelette was generous and tasty and the breakfast potatoes were nice and hot. While it wasn't extraordinary, it's a nice place I'd likely revisit for a cup of joe and a chat over breakfast...pretty cool. read more

I came to Papermoon about a year ago with a friend and didn't review. I visited again this weekend and my experience was too much.. had to post. First of all, the decor of this place is WACKY but FUN! A+ for creativity, random dolls/clcoks/arts/figurines/pez.. the list goes on. It's worth checking out for the decor alone. It's exactly the kind of weirdness you would expect in Hampden. Well done. We came in on Sunday at noon.. 7 of us. No reservations taken so we were at the whim of the sunday brunch Croud. We got 45 minutes. Well it was 80 minutes. But okay, sunday brunch, we get it, the food would be worth it. We were seated around 1:35, comfortably. We immediately put in an order of mushroom gravy fries (DO THIS THEY ARE AMAZING.. albeit tiny portion), coffee, and milkshakes. Here is what happened: Water immediately, good. 30 minutes later. No sign of the waitress. 40 minutes later. Waitress finally reappears. We put in food orders. 45 minutes: Milkshakes finally arrive. No coffee. For the rest of the meal. And yes, we were charged for the coffee. 65 minutes: food FINALLY arrives. WIthout any requested and/or paid for condiments. She brings them back with an attitude. 100 minutes: We have finally received bill and pay it.... after we had to correct it for the condiments that still didn't arrive after requesting. Service was awful. We arrived at noon and didn't leave until after three. So our entire day was basically spent around trying to eat. And the food part: OK. The prices are Papermoon are not that of a diner. I expect better than that if a sandwich and fries costs $15-17. THe food was no better than diner. I ordered the Fancy pants burger medium rare.. it was well done... thin patty.. killed. The roll was not toasted, so it was far too bready and overtook the burger. The goat cheese was okay, but plain. The sweet potato fries were awful. soggy. gross. I wish I had gotten more of the plain fries (and that mushroom gravy which was the highlight of the brunch). Don't go burger here. Also don't get an omelet.. as I ordered one last year and it was a pathetic overcooked omelet with minimal filling. Home fries are nothing to write home about either. HOWEVER - the milkshakes. Those are worth it. My friend got one, didn't even want to eat her unappetizing COLD breakfast sandwich, and was happy as a clam. She got the bacon milkshake. I thought it would be gross, but then I had a sip. It's like breakfast in a shake.. all the best parts - the coffee and the bacon. Order this. Cut your losses. As we were waiting for our table, I had perused yelp to see reviews and couldn't belive the low rating. Well, now I get it. I won't return here. CHeck out Golden West in Hampden for a better brunch and better service. read more
