Pappy's Bar-B-Q is absolutely amazing! I always get the Brisket Sandwich and without fail it is always juicy and delicious. We only have this when driving between cities. We take every chance we can to stop here. Some people complain it's expensive but it's $7 (I'm rounding up actually like 6.50) which is not bad for a brisket sandwich. The meat is tender and goes along great with their BBQ sauce. At times the sauce overwhelms the sandwich but this is not the case here. Its smooth and balanced. The sides are also yummy, the beans, green beans, and mashed potatoes are all excellent sides. I always enjoy my sandwich with a sweet tea (its amazing). I would honestly recommend to anyone to go here instead of a fast food place. The place is clean, especially the restrooms. Very friendly staff and food is excellent by Monahans standards. The sliced brisket and chicken are the stars at this location. Only thing keeping me from giving them another star is that they often run out of food and their hours are difficult to keep up with. Although I have long thought Houston was the most miserable place in Texas, Midland-Odessa definitely can now claim the title of being the asshole hole of Texas. Between the refineries and tumbleweeds, Pappy's looked quite the inviting truck stop between, well, Pappy's and McDonald's. I was expecting this place to be full of big burly bikers, maybe even one called Pappy. Well, I was disappointed. No Pappys here. But you can find a decent brisket sandwich. Go light on the sauce, as it's the runny type reminiscent of Campbell's Tomato soup. Has anyone heard of Hot Ham water? Pappy's has hot BBQ sauce water, but I'll be forgiving since Texas BBQ is supposed to be served sans sauce. The cole slaw seemed like it was prepared, er found, in the bulk aisle at Costco. Though I have to admit, the apple dumplings simmering in the electric skillet looked pretty bomb ass- you can't buy apple dumplings in bulk. Can you even buy apple dumplings anywhere? No? If there is a next time, I'll eat a lunch of apple dumplings. It is worth acknowledging that this place has a huge Tombstone poster, among other classic westerns. Also, there are enough Yankee candles to make you wonder whether they are having a seance to speak with ghost of John Wayne. Thank God for the candles- the ambience (and yes, roadside BBQ can have ambience) was the saving grace of this place. read more

A solid 4.5 stars. The brisket almost converted this pork addict. The place is unpretentious, spotlessly clean, and is set up cafeteria-style. We came in for a very early lunch before hitting the road, so the pork ribs weren't quite ready yet, but the staff recommended the brisket and I was glad they did. I got the small plate with two sides, and my man got the Lobo Special. I can't see myself ever returning to this area again, but if I did I would definitely stop in again for the green beans alone. I do quite a bit of travel and eating abroad for my job. The meat was dry and the BBQ sauce contained more oil than flavor. The sides were less than flavorful and not heated well despite arriving in the middle of lunch rush. They put a limit on bread and sides and only had a couple of meat choices when I rolled through. If you are headed east, hold your hunger until you arrive at KDs BBQ in Midland. Worth the wait. read more

This is in fact the very first barbecue place that I ate in Texas when I first moved here 6 1/2 years ago. I'm sorry to see that it's only average rated and maybe I'm going out on a limb here because it was the very first place I ate here in Texas but I'm going to say my first experience was a good one. Is that typical southern feel and very straight arrow friendly folk that let me try a sample of a little bit of everything the way I like it. I remember having my first Texas brisket here as well as my first Texas ribs and they even let me try some of the sausage and barbecue chicken as well and I really did like everything including all the sides which were from scratch as well. I have absolutely nothing bad to say about this place. It's been over 6 1/2 years since I've tried this place but I have to give a good review on my first Texas barbecue especially if it was as good as it was in the servers were very nice. If you're ever on interstate Highway 20 and you go past Monahans Texas this place is the place to try if you want to good lunch or even dinner and I would highly recommend stopping here if you want to get a quick bite to eat.if I'm ever in the area again I will definitely go back and say hi to my old friends and have another Texas brisket because I really did enjoy this place as I want you to do as well. I gave 1 star because I had to give at least one. We have gone to this place a few times and the food was always good. Today my husband and I entered to this place, ordered the food, and when I was going to get a high chair for my little one oh surprise I found on the floor a disgusting little rat!!!!! I immediately thought: if there's a little rat by the tables with all the customers this place has to be infested!!!!!!! Brisket is juicy and they trim the fat of each piece for you. Corn bread is generally not dry and pretty tasty. The ribs were a little on the dry side, but with some sauce were delicious. All in all a very decent barbeque place. Sausage was okay, they don't make it on site (Idon't think), but didn't ask where it was from. The only downside is the breakfast burrito. Well, I hate to inform all of you bbq lovers out there, this is the worst place I have found so far in Texas. The brisket was over half fat and I had no idea it was going to cost me my husbands left nut to eat this crap. It will probably be on the menu tomorrow, the corn was old as hell and the beans were from a can with NO FLAVOR AT ALL. The potato salad was nothing like mama's and the cornbread was the only thing we could actually swallow. Save your time and MONEY and avoid this place. If you are really hungry and you need to eat, go to stripes and get a cold sandwich out of the cooler, it will satisfy your hunger way better and it won't cost you your nuts.
