Yesterday I stopped in looking for a free-standing pull-up bar, on a whim that they might have it, and lo and behold they had a Power Tower that was exactly what I needed. Mike was very can-do and cleared out a space for me to try it out, adjusting the height so it would work for me (I'm 6'7", hence the need for a pull-up higher than a door frame bar), and gave me plenty of space and no pressure to try it out. I bought it on the spot. I knew it probably wouldn't fit in my car and was only there for groceries at the Valli's supermarket in the same shopping center, and asked if I could could pick it up tomorrow (today) and Mike worked out when he'd have it disassembled by in time for me, and then offered to drop it off at my place at the end of the day for free (given I live relatively close in South Evanston), which was amazing and I took him up on it. This morning I woke up and couldn't get the idea of doing pull-ups at home out of my head, and stopped by at 10:30 am just after they opened, and Mike was not at all surprised to see me, was very ready to disassemble the item and try to load it into my car, and sure enough my car was too small. He then, unbelievably, offered to drive it over to my place on the spot. I was incredulous that he'd give me that kind of time during the business day. Besides this exceptional customer service experience (I hope I don't get Mike in trouble with customers asking for home delivery! ), they also have great selection and I've gotten a used skateboard there for my daughter and water bottles. The repair team at Erik's managed to find the tiny piece of glass that made me 30 minutes late for work embedded in my back tire's inner tube. They replace it, filled up my tires and I swear my bike rides better than it did before. A totally clean, professional job--hopefully I never need to come in for a flat tire again, but if YOU need one, Erik's is the place! Now my one...kinda tiny but not tiny gripe is that Erik's has absolutely no bike racks outside. It feels a little unfathomable that a bike (and skate etc) shop doesn't have any bike racks? I've come to Erik's on my bike before to get some accessories and I recall very well how flabbergasted I was. You might think those red bicycle sculptures right outside are bike racks. If they are, they are terribly constructed. You cannot roll your bike up to the "racks", you have to lift it up the concrete steps. If there are cars parked in front of them, this becomes way more difficult. The gaps in the sculpture aren't intuitive for looping locks through. So, no, I don't consider these bike racks. Erik's is a wonderful, wonderful bike and board and accessory shop--please put just a regular old bike rack in the lot!

The last time I was in a DICK's, it was to buy a White Sox cap and it was a couple years back when they were doing a wee bit better than they are this year! The pricing here does generally seem a bit elevated but that comes with the brick-and mortar business and the privilege of inspecting what you're buying. Who remembers Sportsmart, or Sports Authority, or further back Herman's? They're all gone now, and I think DICK's is it these days for sporting goods. I'm glad they are still at it for us.

My photographic memory told me that I've passed by The Locker Room on the way to some restaurants on Central St. The Locker Room is located directly across from Ryan Field. Currently, there are many off-season apparel, accessories, and gadgets on sale. Once we walked into the actual store, the space was quite cramped and hard to maneuver. However, they were well-stocked and had massive inventories. A older gentleman with a suit was the store attendant. He was very friendly and helpful with Dad's searches for short and long sleeve t-shirts. Dad thought the large size would fit, but they did run small. However, the sweatshirts were true to size. In the end, Dad walked away with one (1) sweatshirt, one (1) short-sleeve t-shirt, one (1) long-sleeve t-shirt, and one (1) cap for $125.31. I thought the price was fair for these four (4) items that would normally cost somewhere between $150 to $200. I'm not really familiar with other NW souvenir shops around, but I would recommend this place if you're looking for everything NW (but they won't beat Wisconsin)!
