The owner, Mike, is really outgoing and super helpful, and I don't feel any buying pressure when I'm in the store. It's like a used bookstore of sporting equipment, which feels very comfortable. Yesterday I stopped in looking for a free-standing pull-up bar, on a whim that they might have it, and lo and behold they had a Power Tower that was exactly what I needed. Mike was very can-do and cleared out a space for me to try it out, adjusting the height so it would work for me (I'm 6'7", hence the need for a pull-up higher than a door frame bar), and gave me plenty of space and no pressure to try it out. I bought it on the spot. I knew it probably wouldn't fit in my car and was only there for groceries at the Valli's supermarket in the same shopping center, and asked if I could could pick it up tomorrow (today) and Mike worked out when he'd have it disassembled by in time for me, and then offered to drop it off at my place at the end of the day for free (given I live relatively close in South Evanston), which was amazing and I took him up on it. This morning I woke up and couldn't get the idea of doing pull-ups at home out of my head, and stopped by at 10:30 am just after they opened, and Mike was not at all surprised to see me, was very ready to disassemble the item and try to load it into my car, and sure enough my car was too small. He then, unbelievably, offered to drive it over to my place on the spot. I was incredulous that he'd give me that kind of time during the business day. Besides this exceptional customer service experience (I hope I don't get Mike in trouble with customers asking for home delivery! ), they also have great selection and I've gotten a used skateboard there for my daughter and water bottles. When my daughter gets old enough to play sports, I'm sure I'll be back. And as I'm kitting out my home gym setup, this will be my first stop. read more

Because Evanston Youth Hockey has a relationship with PIAS-Evanston I had to go there to buy a piece of hockey gear that could not be purchased Anywhere Else. NOTE: I decided some time ago that Anywhere Else are my first, second, third... choices because the owner here at PAIS has *YELLED* at me three times for not pickup up an order that was not really a special order. He's absolutely crazy! He also *YELLED OBSCENITIES" at me for mentioning (as gently as I could) that he didn't cut my son's skates on-center, and "Could we find a way to guarantee a better cut?" But I digress... So I had to buy a piece of branded Evanston hockey gear, and only PIAS-Evanston carried it. All options of buying elsewhere were off the table. So I had no choice but to go into this establishment. I brought my son--thinking surely the owner would not yell at me in front of my son. Luckily the owner wasn't there. So I just introduced my son to the staff--who were tossing around a football (important job, I guess?). Staff Guy #1 said hi and turned to Staff Guy #2 and said "You help him." and then returned to doing nothing. Staff Guy #2 said to my son "There's a pile of those there; help yourself." After about 2-3 minutes of digging through a junky pile my son could not find the item in the size he was looking for, so I asked Guy #2 "Could you please help him?" Guy #2 said: "He should be perfectly capable." and returned to throwing a football to Guy #3. Long story. No help. My son dug and dug and dug amidst the junk and finally found one piece in the right size... no thanks to The PIAS-Evanston Team! I walked all the way to Play It Again to look for a bicycle. I had bought one from the location on the south side a few years ago. All of the used bikes were the same price as a bike I can purchase brand new at other businesses. Customer service was lacking as well. I walked all around the store and was not greeted nor asked if I wanted some assistance. Will not be back. I'm not saying I'm not going to ANY Play It Again store, but it won't be this one! read more

I very much wanted to buy a quality tennis racket that was both used and from a local shop. I was quite happy they had a few options. I almost purchased one of two options. Both were overpriced. I learned that the racket I was most interested in was overpriced (like $50) relative to what I can buy (same model racket) from every source I looked at online. Most of those sources were selling "new" rackets $15 cheaper than this used one. And it wasn't even the exact model I wanted. I seriously considered compromising in order to buy used and local. I like this store, prefer to buy from this store, but am disappointed. I'm hoping for a better experience next time. I didn't barter because I just didn't have the energy, and didn't think they'd actually budge enough being that they started off telling me the racket is $235 new (not accurate) and the price was so high above where I would value the purchase. Instead I bought a brand new higher end model (the exact one I wanted) with a 30-day guarantee for less than the one they were selling. I couldn't pass it up. Anecdote: my friend just told me of her experience wanting to buy a used squat rack. She ended up doing the same thing I did, buying new elsewhere. No shade to the store. However I would advocate for better pricing. Help me buy more used and local. Don't leave it to me to heavy bargain. read more

Had such a great experience here. I bought a used single speed bike - the staff took care of us the minute we walked in until we literally drove out of the lot. Brakes were tuned up, they wrapped up the handle bars with new tape, and even helped us load 2 bikes into my tiny Corolla so we wouldn't have to come back the next day to pick up. Amazing place where I always get just what I need. I am an adult who finally has some time enjoying some various sports. I am an amateur but play various sports across the four seasons and always come here for a great set of advice and helpful staff. Especially, the owner is unassuming and really helps out pick the best kind of sports equipment that I am looking at my level. Purchase a bike and was not what we expected. Spoke to owner Mike and let him know that sale boys on staff that day where not so experience and left some information out was told. That we need another part and would be 30-45.00 dollars and was actually 98 dollars purchased it through Amazon after going back and forth within the course of 4 days. Due to no answers on text messages which that was good Mike was like text me personal. But was told to bring part in by Matt the repair guy on Thursday would be there and work on the bike. Dropped off and was waiting to here back that bike was down and ready to go. However nothing again for 2 days. After told would be done by Friday. Called in on Saturday 1- bike was no where to be found. I assume he sold it. Once I asked for money for the part I ordered she actually gave me box back and they never opened it so he never intended to fix the bike. It was a chain ring so my son could change gears on bike. Terrible service. They do need more attendants that know what they are doing and no don't leave bike unattended also. I felt bad for my son as he really liked the bike and owner also very very rude. I first called him to inform in of all that happened. I ask for a refund but I wanted to give them the chance to get it corrected and we did get part. He yelled at me and said I sell 300 hundred of theses bike and if I don't antes refund he yelled on phone tell me now so I can do but he said he doesn't do this. But like I said I gave them the chance to get done. But they never intended to do anything since day 1. Even me paying out of pockets for the part. read more

I don't know what the deal is with this place but this place provided no customer service at all. I called ahead of time to check if there were roller skates and was reassured that they had some on stock so I drove 20 minutes only to get there and find none on the shelf. I went to the front desk and the guy wouldn't look up from what he was doing when I asked for help. They had a teenage kid working there that ultimately answered me and went to get the owner who brought me a pair from the back. No one asked how I was doing, if I needed help or anything. When i went to return the box the guy who ignored me suddenly looks up and asks " all good?" as if I was going to buy. So you can't look up to answer my question but you will to take my money? I just walked away from this place. Someone else mentioned below potential racial bias (I'm a young black woman) so maybe that's it and if so that's really shameful. I had to rehab my shoulder and needed some weightlifting equipment and resistance bands. I talked with an employee over the phone about cost. As soon as I heard "Its .69 cents a pound for used dumbbells" I was sold. The selection at the store is excellent for many things. (I even found some lightly used Burton snowboards for $200. Retail price is $600). However, the layout of the store seems straightforward but is a bit confusing your first time in. Luckily, the gentleman who runs the place is extremely helpful. He was helpful even to the point of saving me money. When he totaled up my weights he quickly asked me if I had looked in a certain place to find a product used and much cheaper. We also shared in common the fact that we both had had multiple shoulder injuries. I did disagree with him about the efficacy of physical therapy but I will not hold that against him. Anyone who likes everything they buy to be as shiny as a mirror won't be happy here. Some of the dumbbells definitely needed some Formula 409. This stuff doesn't bother me however. In addition, they do sell new equipment; including new dumbbells. Next time I need sporting goods I will be going back to this location. I like dealing with good people. My bike was stolen, and I went to PIA that night for a new (used) one. I got a nice Diamondback for a reasonable price, and owner Mike threw in a free helmet because he felt bad about the theft. Went back after I couldn't shift the gears, and without making me feel like an idiot, Mike figured out it was because I had put my lock holder around the wire. This place has a ton of used sporting equipment (along with new stuff). It's super easy to find stuff that's very gently used (practically new). Why pay full retail when you can get a great discount for the same item? The owner (I think he's the owner), Mike, is so nice and helpful! I've sold some used equipment to them, and the prices are fair, and they really helped me out by taking things we no longer use. They're so easy-going and the whole process is quick. If you ever need any sporting equipment, I would highly recommend checking this place out first before you go to Dick's. The people here are much nicer, friendly and knowledgeable.
