We depended on our hometown appliance store, Smith Appliances. I recently purchased my grandparent's home in Warsaw when my grandfather passed away. The intent was to turn it into a rental home. There was a need to replace all the appliances including the refrigerator, dishwasher, range, hood, washer and dryer. Being so far away, my first inclination was to look at Lowes and Home Depot, thinking they might be better suited for what I needed to do. However, I also remembered my roots and before I made any purchases I checked with Smith Appliances. Well, that was the best decision I made. Not only did I pay substantially less for every appliances, they provided free delivery, took away the old appliance free of charge, they service the appliances they sell. I'm not talking $25-$50 cheaper either. I'm talking hundreds of dollars cheaper than Lowes and Home Depot for each appliance and the exact same appliance! And when the deliver, they don't give you a 4 hour window. They give you a specific time and call you when they are on the way! From my experience, I can't give Smith Appliances anything less than 5 stars. I will refer friends and family to then.

Upgraded the prices to Moderate. ---- I come up here regularly to visit in-laws. I really wish I'd known this place was a bead shop. I only ever looked at the name and based on that, thought it was an art gallery. At any rate, it is at the time of this writing, in the throes of a retirement sale and there are all sorts of beads and beading supplies and jewellery going at ridiculous prices. And - mirabile dictu - the owner is selling off much of her fabric stock at prices that actually made me feel a little weak at the knees. Get over there while it is still there and be glad I decided to be fiscally prudent while I was in there.

As someone who for several years lived within a short distance of several really good record stores…read moreand has for years made pilgrimages to record stores in Chicago, I'm admittedly spoiled and can't honestly be fair to Karma. While part of a small regional chain, their first priority is staying afloat financially, which means they pretty much have to carry mostly items that cater to local tastes and buying habits. As a result, much of their stock is head shop merchandise. As such, you'll have better luck finding Scooby Doo "tobacco" pipes and everything you need for a good "tobacco" blaze than that record you can't find at Wal*Mart just down the road. The music they carry -- again, dictated by local tastes and conglomerate radio station outlets -- tends to be a mix of classic and/or mook/grunt rock, "hot new" country, mall punk, and whatever's popular in the hip-hop/r&b realm...with a large dose of stoner music. I can't really fault them for carrying very little decent independent rock, blues, folk, etc., when the chance of it getting sold is very slim, but it still really makes browsing the store no fun unless you're after something you can hear on the radio anyway or will go well with that bong and Zippo. Again, in their defense, they're working with local taste -- and the one record store left in South Bend isn't a whole lot better, even with plenty more reasons why it should be. Solid positives: They're very open to vinyl and quite willing to order pretty much anything... and usually even give me a couple bucks off when I order a vinyl record. The staff does a good job of helping customers. Occasionally I've had to stand and wait for 5-10 minutes while the lone clerk helps some kids sort through the "tobacco accessories" case, but they make up for it in friendliness and acknowledge the wait, which is really what matters. Overall, it is what it is, and I want to support local shops even when it's tough. They do the best they can (and better than many others), and they earn that 3 star rating for their willingness to order indie vinyl releases for that one guy who wants them. Stop by and support them if you can.

After hours of research and varied recommendations about incredibly expensive commercial machines, I finally decided on the Sailrite Ultrafeed SLZ-1, mostly because I already knew Sailrite for their product quality and exceptional customer service for their fabrics and notions. This machine is a true workhorse compared to my old Singer! It's robust motor powers through my slipcover project with ease. It's like driving a Maserati after owning a Yugo for 33 years! My one and only request would be for more home sewing feet attachments. I'd love to see feed dog covers and a free form quilting foot attachment. I'm "sew" happy with my new Ultrafeed!!
