Paraiso Tropical was celebrating their anniversary a couple months ago. They had a sale on Birra tacos and Papusas. I like this place and they have a good selection of grab and go meals in the warmer near the front of the building. So if you are feeling peckish just choose whatever looks good. I haven't had a bad thing here and it is very affordable. So even if you don't like something it isn't a big commitment. Both items were delicious but for sure the papusas were the favourite. Thick corn tortilla stuffed with seasoned pork meat and cheese, served with tomato salsa and pickled cabbage salad! And I loved the crisp cabbage ontop. The Birra tacos - beef, onion, cilantro, corn tortilla, and spices. They have a great little convience store that sells a whole lot of Latino products. Paraiso Tropical Latin Market I checked this place out, it's a popular Latin market that sells imported and traditional goods from Central America like corn flour, beans, jars, music, movies and magazines. What I like about this market was that there's this small food bar beside the front cash register that sells authentic Latin cuisines like tamales, pupusa, tacos and many more. Here's what I got and tried. Carnitas Taco. An order came with 4 tacos with 2 corn tortillas to each of them. It had a good amount of meat and toppings to them, but I found the pork to be so dry and was very hard to chew and swallow. Mexican and Colombian Tamales. There was 3 different tamales on the menu, but they only had the Mexican and Colombian tamales at the time. The Colombian tamales was wrapped in plantain leaves and stuffed with corn masa, carrots, potatoes, chicken drumstick (bone in) and pork. I wasn't expecting any bones, so that threw me off, I would have preferred chicken without bones. The Mexican tamales was perfectly seasoned and had the right amount of chicken and corn masa, which was wrapped in corn husk. Pupusa. This was a thick corn tortilla that was stuffed with seasoned pork meat and cheese and it had a nice crisp exterior on either side. Flautus (Taquitos). An order came with 5, each stuffed with chicken in a corn tortilla and deep fried. There wasn't much of the filling, but more so of the corn tortilla. Empanadas Argentinas de Queso y Guava and Pastel Brasileiro. The Empanadas Argentinas looked puffy, but it only had a thin layer of cheese and a small dollop of guava jam with sugar on the exterior. The Pastel Brasileiro was stuffed with ground beef, olives, eggs with a secret blend of seasoning. Overall, food was good, but my favourite was the pupusas, Mexican tamales and the pastel brasileiro. read more

Went in on recommendation for some authentic Mexican food for takeout and I was not disappointed! Grabbed the Yuca with Chiccarones, and it was super good. Fried pork sides and fried yuca with sauce. I also tried the Argentinian empanadas. It was tasty. Took a tamales and some Pazole home too and will try those later. This place also has so much other stuff like a grocery store of authentic Mexican and Latin products. Tons of chillies and tortillas and canned items and hot sauce. I've been wanting to try Paraiso Tropical ever since I saw a couple walk out with takeout food. I remember thinking, "you can order hot food at the grocery store?!?!" and then attempted to find more information online. Good luck with that because there's not a sniff of a menu online. That meant we were going in with no idea what type of food there would be but I was hoping for good things. While I waited for A to show up, I browsed the aisles. They have everything you need to make your own Latin American food - spices, beans, masa, hot sauces, drinks and snacks. They even had my favourite Mexican sauce (Valentina)! I've never seen this anywhere else in town - pretty happy that I found a spot that has them in stock. Didn't know you could get them by the litre! The menu! You're welcome. They have tacos (only on the weekends) and pupusas (Friday and the weekend). They only had boiled cassava (no fried) when we were there so we passed on that. Their food is pretty heavy on the starches and carbs, so keep that in mind when you order. We ordered a couple different things to try and taste most of the items available from their food cart. There's no room to sit so it's strictly takeout. Lucky for us, it was a beautiful Friday in December for lunch outside. That's right, we picnic tabled it up! - 2x pupusas ($3.00 each) - the pupusas had a pretty generous portion of pork stuffed inside them. The man working the counter topped things off with a good amount of cabbage and tomato sauce. They were almost out of them when we ordered but he went to the back and was able to replenish his pupusa goodie basket. Good but wish they were warmer. Nothing beats fresh from the kitchen - these were lukewarm at best. - Flautas ($6.00 for five) - the flautas were great with a nice crunchy outside and tasty inside. Topped with tomato sauce and some chopped lettuce, it was refreshing and light. I'd order this one again. - Chicken empanada and Salvadorean empanada ($3.00 each) - both types of empanadas were pretty good. If they hadn't been sitting for awhile, they would have been even better. The Salvadorean had an excellent filling and tantalized the taste buds. That one I would easily eat again. - 2x Argentinian tamale ($3.00) - we each got our own tamala but we could have easily shared one. Or better yet, we should have tried the Mexican tamale (in a corn husk) to compare. The masa was light and moist while the filling had potato, chicken, chickpeas and even an olive inside. Pretty decent. Paraiso Tropical is a solid spot to grab any Latin American staples along with harder to find items. As for the food itself, I'd give it a decent rating for what it is. If you can somehow time your order to coincide with the food coming out hot, it would be perfect. Otherwise, it's merely decent. Tough to recommend over El Rancho when it's only four streets down the road. read more

Food is my passion, so finding the correct ingredients can be challenging if you're looking to replicate an authentic dish. I was SO stoked to find a market that stocked tons of Latin spices, chilies, tortillas, Tajin, masa and more...so much more! I plan on trying my hand and tamales soon, so I'm set for that. I also grabbed a few cans of hominy for a big batch of pozole and some chilies to keep on hand. Yum! There were a few delicious goodies in the hot food case, so I grabbed a Mexican tamale for $3 (score). I got to the truck and unwrapped my lovely, warm treat. I have no shame and couldn't wait to get home, so I devoured the tasty shredded meat, enveloped in tender, fluffy masa. It was for science...I needed a baseline tamale to go off of. Today I had Latin food with my mom. This was something different than what I usually eat. I'm more of a burger guy. When we ordered we had a bit of everything on their menu. Their food is pretty tasty, delicious and offers a variety of flavors. One of my favorite things that we got was their Empanada Brasilera de Queso. The cheese they put in was the perfect amount and the pastry blended in really well with the cheese. Overall I had no complaints to give and I'll make sure to come back. read more

Embarrassed I hadn't been in before, but hadn't felt too much of a need. Lately though, the homesickness for Texas has been getting to me, and I needed some supplies. Since i couldn't find hominy anywhere else in town, and really wanted to make some posole, I checked them out and YAY! Big honking cans of it. Plus white cornmeal, which I had also been looking for and unable to find. The only thing I was disappointed about was that they had none of the coarsely ground cornmeal I've also been looking for. To me, it ain't cornbread if you don't have that nice CRRRUUNCH to it. They told me they have had it, just didn't have it last weekend. But Bob's sells it online, so not to despair. Paraiso also has the queso fresco I've been looking for, and the epazote that is recommended as an addition to pots of beans (to remove the fart factor). I'd just spent oodles at the grocery store right then, but I'm planning on putting Paraiso on my regular agenda. They're so close, and one can never tell when one might go on a tamale-making binge and need and entire bag of masa and the contents for the insides! read more

Ethnic grocery stores are great! They have such awesome, yet quirky things that they sell. Paraiso is one such Latin American grocery store in the Alberta Avenue neighborhood. From outside, it has the uninviting exterior of a cage with vertical railing securing the place from robberies and possible patrons alike. Shoddy wiring makes its way across the barely translucent glass that's covered with dust, grease and such from historic eras. Is there anything more divey? They've got it all. A good variety of canned beans, raw packaged lentils too, a pretty large selection of spices from the south, weird coffee and morning milk mixes like Ovaltine, interesting kitchen tools and utensils and a decent spread of produce and dairy. I love that they carry roughly 6 flavors of Jarritos, a Mexican soda. Jarritos means "little jars". They have bottled sodas that come in fruity varieties like guava, pineapple, hibiscus, strawberry etc. Biscuits, triscuits, cookies and such tailor made for the Latino taste are also available. Now comes the great part. Fresh food! A small menu of items including pupusas, tamales, chips etc. are available for purchase. We picked up the fried cassava chips. They serve it with chunks of sausage, salsa and a cole-slawish mix of carrots and cabbage. I love cassava so I definitely enjoyed gorging this snack down while walking up 118th Ave. Yes, I like this store and will come here every now and then. It's not very hard to find. While Tienda Latina on the south side provides a larger selection of items than here, I'm still a huge fan of this store. They sell El Mercado tortillas, Don Panchos Chips, and gigantic cans of various chiles. And virtually any kind of dried chile you need. If you want to make authentic latin american food of any sort, this is the place to buy your ingredients on the North Side. And their street food is also fantastic - I greatly enjoyed the Colombian (corn-meal) empanada I purchased. read more

Stopped in the other Saturday late afternoon picked up a few tamales, they were delicious at 3 bucks each but had to pay almost 6 dollars extra for a little slaw and thinned out sauce . Strange that I'd be charged when it comes free with Papoosa's for the same 3 dollar price but we're sold out of . First off, the staff are all very good looking... I know that is not crucial, but come on, it helps! We got there at 3:45 on a Sunday...15 minutes before closing. Holy Monkey, the place filled up with people buying their "to go" food. It smelled pretty good and looked pretty good and judging by the line up of Spanish speaking patrons,must taste pretty good too. We were there to buy unusual latin style groceries, we did hat, we did OK, we have to go back to try their food, and enquire about the assortment of weird items behind the counter. It is a cool place, cool good looking latino people, cool weird latino foods and drinks, lots of Mexican hot sauce and yummy looking food to go, gotta check it out again when it is not so busy. read more

Checked out the last day of the kaleido festival along 118 th ave, stopped at a Latin market named Paraiso Tropical North. They were selling papupas home made! Such a simple snack which is a traditional El Salvadorian dish of a corn tortilla stuffed with pork and cheese topped with a tomato base sauce and coleslaw. Just an FYI they made them every Friday and Saturday fresh! Pretty good price of 3$ each. read more

Just stocked up for our Peruvian friends that live in BC. Whenever they come they stock up themselves but it's our turn to visit now and of course there was a list lol! I've Ben to this store many times over the years and they're fabulous! So helpful and friendly. One Peruvian lady (sorry I didn't get her name) almost did all the shopping for me! My husband and I have been going to this grocery store to buy some latin food essentials for some time now. There's a variety of salsas,chiles,beans for those who like mexican food, the people who work there are quite nice and speak Spanish and English. We always buy our Bustelo coffee there, and don't miss the cassava and plantain chips. Sometimes they have hot food near the counter, tamales,pupusas, empanadas. Very disappointed. The food was dry, the attention too bad. The groceries zone dirty and messy. The staff not great people. I went there because I wanted to try with mexican food and I found in internet the place to buy dry chiles but I did not like this store. I do not recommend the food because I noticed the cashier is taking order and go immediately to serve the food and did not use gloves and took some of the food with her hands. Bad sensation. read more
