This is the second time in a few years that Patricia Jimenez helped me get a perfect shoe with the perfect fit. Patricia is very attentive, communicative, and caring, all wrapped up with extensive experience. Patricia spent over a half hour carefully selecting several shoe options for me, which resulted in another great find and perfect fit! The store itself has great staff, the same prices you would get elsewhere in other physical or online stores, and, at times, a limited selection( which is why I could only rate it a 4 star). My wife shops here as well for her nurses shoes for wearing at work in the Operating Room. The service from staff like Patricia is the reason I shop here!! Keep up the great work!!

Finally, feeling much more positive, I got up, went back to the counter/register, told a man--someone other than who I'd paid the first hundred to, "Why don't I just pay nearly balance, " or something to that effect, and handed over another hundred dollar bill. Second, big mistake. My last mistake was not checking my receipt after they handed it to me. I only looked at it the night before picking up the orthotics and was very unsettled and hardy slept that night. Because it said my balance was 125$, not having credited me with the second hundred but only the initial 100$. Instead of 225$, 325$ was the amount I ended up having to pay. But, hey, I assumed I was dealing with (mostly) honest people. Stay away from this store. Instead, find a good honest podiatrist, and if you need your orthotics refurbished, the HANGER CLINIC at 210 e 86th does that service and does a superior job. (Except you need a prescription, which is why I went to Eneslow.)

When I found out and the office manager suggested I go to one of those, I was told I had to keep with the tech I had in NY city for continuity. I had broken my ankle and the brace was for use after I came out of the orthopedic boot to give extra support as my ankle continued to heal until I would not need any additional support. I was told by the tech it would be ready in 1-2 weeks so I stayed in the boot an extra 2 weeks. The office manager said she wished the techs would not say that because it is always longer, like 3-5 weeks. I had already paid $650 and I paid another $150 for expedited delivery and got the brace over 6 weeks later. Since this was over the holidays, it was understandable there was some delay, but six weeks is a long time, and especially when my doctor wanted me to have the brace as soon as I was able to come out of the orthopedic boot. When I finally got the brace it did not fit at all. It was terribly painful. After many trips and attempts to make it fit, it never did. (I had to pay in advance). While waiting for my tech, a man in the waiting room, who did not introduce himself, said I should probably see Ryan, a different tech, but then my regular tech came and I was led into a room with him. I found out later that this man was Andrew, that was the president of Eschen, but stating I should see Ryan, he did nothing to get Ryan involved at that point. The original tech was not able to do anything for me. The president said the brace didn't fit because my foot was too difficult for a brace. (It was not Eschen's fault) I asked the tech about a different brace and he said this one had to be the one since the doctor ordered it. (As an RN, I frequently call doctors to change prescriptions when the originals don't work). I wrote two letters out of desperation to the president, Andrew. He told me not to send him letters, but to call him on the phone instead. I can only surmise that this was so that there would not be a paper trail. His emails were general. After speaking to the doctor and my physical therapist about the situation, Andrew suggested my physical therapist call him and he would speak to my doctor. My therapist called him, and he said he spoke to my doctor resulting in another kind of brace being made for me. I was measured for it by Ryan who became the tech working with me. Andrew made it clear multiple times that he didn't have to make another brace for me because he already had tried and it didn't fit, but he would give it one more try at no extra cost, but there were no guarantees it would fit due to my difficult foot, and this was the last time and no refund if it didn't work. He told me that so often that I expected it to fail. When Ryan put it on me, it fit perfectly other than the fact that the imitation leather was of low quality and started breaking down the first time I wore it. This ended up being 23 weeks from the time I was first fitted for a brace. (That being said, I was out of town a few weeks in the mix, but that is long after the time it was needed to help transition out of the orthopedic boot. There were also orthotics ordered that were also late and very substandard. Though, when measured for orthotics, I showed the tech my old ones that showed where I needed support, what I was given what looked like something out of a box from Walmart. Cheap and flat. On the second round requiring more visits a change was put in. That should have been done at the beginning but did help take away the pain. They are not very supportive at all . Since I had already paid up front, I was stuck with it. I initially signed that I was not satisfied with either orthotics or brace, but in the end I was mostly satisfied with the new brace and thought I could use the flimsy orthotics in dress shoes for some support. I really do not trust Eschen at all. The only good thing about it is Ryan, so if you go there, get him. Andrew was not honest several times. I brought a friend with me every visit and we just looked at each other when he contradicted himself, and from my view, he lied. (Perhaps he did not remember what he had said before?) He frequently interrupted me and did not want to listen to anything about orthotics, only the brace. I spent a total of $800 on these two products and they came too late to do any good, which resulted in my condition getting worse. With all the parking and gas for multiple visits it cost me more than $1,000. I would never go back to Eschen. I do not recommend them unless you get Ryan as your technician.

Living in NYC, where walking is a way of life, I felt crushed, fearing my mobility would continue to decline. I desperately tried various over-the-counter shoe inserts from brands like Sof Sole, Orthofeet, and Birkenstock, but none offered any relief. I consulted a podiatrist, and X-rays revealed bone spurs on both my left and right heels (though only the left was symptomatic at the time). My podiatrist explained that there wasn't a definitive cure for bone spurs; instead, the focus was on pain reduction to enable a normal life. She strongly recommended I visit "the best Certified Pedorthist in NYC," Spencer Weisbond (her exact words), for custom-made orthotics. At that point, I was willing to try anything for even a slight reduction in pain, so I promptly scheduled an appointment. My experience at Orthotic Solutions was excellent from the start. Spencer made the molding process easy and comfortable while he explained everything thoroughly and efficiently. A few weeks later, I returned to pick up my custom orthotics. Spencer trimmed them to fit the shoes I brought and provided instructions on their care. My hope was that they would at least ease the pain enough for me to walk short distances around the city. What happened, however, was far more profound. In just a few weeks of always using my custom orthotics, the pain in my left heel had completely disappeared. That was two years ago, and I remain entirely pain-free when using my custom orthotics. Occasionally, if I walk for extended periods without them or go barefoot, I can feel a hint of pain starting to return, reminding me that the bone spurs are still present. But the custom orthotics properly distributes the pressure on my feet, allowing me to walk without pain. Frankly, if I hadn't experienced this myself, I wouldn't have believed that custom orthotics could make such a significant difference in my life. Thank you, Spencer, for giving me my mobility back!

She said, "that has nothing to do with me. You'll have to go ask the front desk." I had taken off my shoes and socks for the exam. I looked at her for a moment and realized she was dead serious. So she watched me put my shoes and socks back on, knowing every step I take is painful, and limp up to the front desk to ask them. What an abysmal human being. Then, she looked at my MRI report for less than 5 seconds and said "there's nothing here so I don't know what you expect me to do." The MRI report noted three major issues, the most serious of which was the cause to all my pain. There certainly was "something there." She was of absolutely no help to me and basically told me to "walk it off." She did prescribe me an anti-inflammatory....except she seemed unwilling to actually send it through. I grew up thinking that there were systems in place, people in charge that would ensure the world wouldn't tumble into utter chaos...and now I've grown up to find that that is categorically untrue. There are no adults in the room. I could go on with this unrelated, unprompted tangent, but all this is to say that the Hospital for Special Surgery restored my faith in humanity. My mother needed an partial knee replacement, and as her primary helper in all things, I handled the communication, brought her to her appointments, brought her in for surgery, waited, and took her home. Please believe me when I say that every step of the process was handled efficiently, and every one of the many, many people we dealt with was not just good at their job, but they were also courteous and usually downright lovely. Having spent time in several hospitals, this was not what I expected. It was what I hoped for of course, but certainly hasn't been my past experience. From the security personnel who welcomed us to the check-in desk to the intake folks to the nurses who prepped her to the surgeon who operated to the folks who run the Family Atrium where we wait for our people to get released to the nurses who took care of my mom post-op, everyone was organized and impressively on top of things. We had a very slight hiccup with her prescriptions, and the nurse in charge was mortified and immediately worked quite tirelessly to make sure it was taken care of, and later followed up with me to make sure we were all set. I'm not pretending that this will not be an annoying and repetitive process. There is waiting involved (less than you might think though). And if you have surgery, you're going to have seventeen different people ask you who you are, your birth date, what surgery you're getting and more...but better that than them replacing the wrong knee. Best of all, the surgery went smoothly and a little more than a week out, my mom is doing great. If and when I need surgery of my own, I will gladly come to HSS.

While first impressions seemed promising, she made several comments that made both my husband and I raise our eyebrows. Her first comment that rubbed us the wrong way was more upon the unsavory delivery of how she corrected us about babies not having a side preference. Neither our pediatrician or neurosurgeon told us that babies are incapable of having a preferred side, and they both determined that he did not suffer from torticollis. Our physical therapist also confirmed this. While she educated us on how torticollis is more likely the true cause of our son's plagiocephaly, her bedside manner in delivering this information was rather patronizing. We respectfully did not agree with her but said nothing to refute her claims. She spoke with certainty and a kind of scary confidence when doling out a dangerous comment that our 6 month old should be sleeping on his stomach by now. Per the American Academy of Pediatrics, babies under 12 months of age should only sleep on their backs for all naps and overnight sleep, to reduce SIDS, prevent suffocation, positional asphyxiation, and rebreathing. Her comment was irresponsible as a healthcare professional. She made several other comments, such as which one of us was the nurse, since we had 1199 as our medical insurance. Seemed to be a stereotyping comment. She could have just asked, "What do you guys do for a living?" Or better yet, "Do either of you work in healthcare since you have 1199?" Next she commented about what to do "when" we have our second child to prevent them from needing a helmet too. Presumptuous again on her behalf. These comments were not as bad as the previously more egregious and negligent comment made earlier, but they were nevertheless unprofessional. My husband and I are both medical professionals and we take infant safety seriously. Her comment about our 6 month old sleeping on his stomach was irresponsible and dangerous should she have made the comment to another pair of parents who might not be inclined to fact check her words. While babies can sleep on their stomachs when contact napping with caregivers, it is highly recommended that they sleep on their backs during overnight sleeps to reduce SIDS and other potentially fatal accidents. Our baby is older now and tends to roll over to his side and stomach but we flip him back to the safer supine sleeping position. The other comments were just unprofessional and she needs to learn how to speak to patients without making assumptions about them, from what they do for a living to the certainty she speaks that a couple is going to have a second child. I would recommend Jessica undergo some sensitivity training because we were uncomfortable with starting our son's treatment in her hands. While we know not all overlapping healthcare professions undergo sensitivity training, we believe that if you're ever going to be patient facing, a company or perhaps school programs that produce providers like orthotists, should include it in their curriculum. I don't recommend Hanger Orthotics for your child and their cranial helmet needs. I feel as though treatment here would have led to more unsolicited and unprofessional commentary from this specific orthotist. We transferred our son's care to Boston Orthotics, and needless to say all of our appointments at this clinic are professional and comfortable. As they should be.
