We were referred to this clinic by our doctor because our child needed a helmet. Our first…read moreappointment we met with the pediatric specialist certified orthotist named Jessica Feeney. While first impressions seemed promising, she made several comments that made both my husband and I raise our eyebrows. Her first comment that rubbed us the wrong way was more upon the unsavory delivery of how she corrected us about babies not having a side preference. Neither our pediatrician or neurosurgeon told us that babies are incapable of having a preferred side, and they both determined that he did not suffer from torticollis. Our physical therapist also confirmed this. While she educated us on how torticollis is more likely the true cause of our son's plagiocephaly, her bedside manner in delivering this information was rather patronizing. We respectfully did not agree with her but said nothing to refute her claims. She spoke with certainty and a kind of scary confidence when doling out a dangerous comment that our 6 month old should be sleeping on his stomach by now. Per the American Academy of Pediatrics, babies under 12 months of age should only sleep on their backs for all naps and overnight sleep, to reduce SIDS, prevent suffocation, positional asphyxiation, and rebreathing. Her comment was irresponsible as a healthcare professional. She made several other comments, such as which one of us was the nurse, since we had 1199 as our medical insurance. Seemed to be a stereotyping comment. She could have just asked, "What do you guys do for a living?" Or better yet, "Do either of you work in healthcare since you have 1199?" Next she commented about what to do "when" we have our second child to prevent them from needing a helmet too. Presumptuous again on her behalf. These comments were not as bad as the previously more egregious and negligent comment made earlier, but they were nevertheless unprofessional. My husband and I are both medical professionals and we take infant safety seriously. Her comment about our 6 month old sleeping on his stomach was irresponsible and dangerous should she have made the comment to another pair of parents who might not be inclined to fact check her words. While babies can sleep on their stomachs when contact napping with caregivers, it is highly recommended that they sleep on their backs during overnight sleeps to reduce SIDS and other potentially fatal accidents. Our baby is older now and tends to roll over to his side and stomach but we flip him back to the safer supine sleeping position. The other comments were just unprofessional and she needs to learn how to speak to patients without making assumptions about them, from what they do for a living to the certainty she speaks that a couple is going to have a second child. I would recommend Jessica undergo some sensitivity training because we were uncomfortable with starting our son's treatment in her hands. While we know not all overlapping healthcare professions undergo sensitivity training, we believe that if you're ever going to be patient facing, a company or perhaps school programs that produce providers like orthotists, should include it in their curriculum. I don't recommend Hanger Orthotics for your child and their cranial helmet needs. I feel as though treatment here would have led to more unsolicited and unprofessional commentary from this specific orthotist. We transferred our son's care to Boston Orthotics, and needless to say all of our appointments at this clinic are professional and comfortable. As they should be. I am 64 years old. I was born without legs from just above the knees, , and have been in and out of…read moreprosthetics facilities since I was 18 months old. Over the years, I have seen very good - and very bad - prosthetists. Chris Kort and Prosthetics in Motion is, hands down, the best experience I've ever had. My journey to Chris started over 20 years ago, in a facility that I loved at the time. I was receiving excellent care - until I wasn't. That prosthetist is a superb limb-maker, but over years he and some of his staff became arrogant and the process, which needs to be collaborative to work - became a power play. Chris worked with this prosthetist, and takes a lot of the same positive approaches, but he has none of the arrogance. Nor does anyone else in the facility. Prosthetics in Motion provides excellent care without any drama. From the moment I first called Prosthetics in Motion -in crisis - I knew this place was different. The person who answered the phone was respectful and kind, and clearly educated in the the business. She immediately told me the person with whom I should be speaking, gave me the name of the practice manager and said Rebecca would call me back. I spoke to Rebecca that day and I immediately felt comfortable and willing to trust. She was knowledgeable in her intake and discussion of the facility and the process, and she gave me more than sufficient information, but she clearly also was an educated and effective listener. In the course of the first phone call with Rebecca, I felt hope that my several years of depression about my legs was lifting. The first consultation appointment was six weeks away, but when I stressed the urgency of my situation, she spoke to Chris and fit me into the schedule within 6 or 7 days. My initial appointment with Chris gave me extreme confidence that Prosthetics in Motion was the place for me to be. He is a smart, kind, talented professional. And the other prosthetists are, too. They work as a team, and it is evident that they really learn from each other, so even the less experienced folk are truly excellent. In between the arrogant guy and Chris, I used another prosthetist. He, also, is kind and smart and has no arrogance, but the facility simply did not have the depth of knowledge and experience with above-knee bilateral amputees that Prosthetics in Motion has. That experience and education, along with Prosthetics in Motion's deep vendor relationships, has once again made my life one that works really well and seamlessly with prostheses, rather than a life that is all about prosthetics and constantly filled with limitation. Finally, I cannot emphasize enough how pleasant it is to go the facility. It is airy and bright and filled with natural light. There are parallel bars and a full size ramp and stairs, as well as a treadmill and other machines and lots of room for walking. Last week, Chris spent almost an hour with me teaching me to walk down the ramp, something I have never been able to master in 25 years of using C-legs. I urge anyone who needs a prosthetist to interview the people at Prosthetics in Motion. I do not think you can find a better facility. -Eve M
