He also leaned that there was not a quick fix ...healing takes time. Our Story: In the fall of 2016 my 16-year-old son had the first of several football/sports concussions. We went through the suggested protocol of sustaining from sports for an allotted amount of time. My son also had a CT scan an MRI and neurological evaluations none of which revealed any issues. My son continued to play football but symptoms such as headache, ringing in ears, feeling aggravated, and always tired were becoming more prevalent. He actually pulled himself from the last came of the season and the playoff due to his symptoms. I don't think any of us realized we were dealing with a real problem. In Jan of 2017 my son was snowboarding in the neighborhood after an unexpected snowfall. He was just playing but fell and hit his helmetless head. That week he came home from school at 4:00 on a Friday and went straight to bed not waking until 11:00 the next day. When he woke he was having sensitivity to light & sound, vision was impaired, head ached on the side of impact, and he just wanted to sleep. He literally slept in a dark room all weekend. It was only then that I realized we were dealing with a real head injury. It was devastating to see my son in this state! I called Sarah late Saturday night in a panic with hopes of getting my son into the Hyperbaric Chamber as soon as possible. She was so accommodating and truly helped to relieve some of my anxiety. From the first meeting to discuss treatment I felt as if she was truly invested in my son's recovery. While waiting for a SPEC Scan appointment at the Amen Clinic's we aggressively started treated my son 2x a day for 2 weeks, then 1x a day until completion of 40 "dives". During this time he was falling into a depression because he felt terrible on a daily basis and other than school was not socializing. All he did was go from the hyperbaric chamber straight to bed. He pushed through the weeks and after the 40 dives was definitely starting to feel some changes. We were finally able to get into the Amen Clinic for the brain scan which confirmed my son did have a minor TBI. The Dr. suggested it was probably worse before the HBOT and this was a treatment they would have recommended. We also changed to a gluten free diet and added brain healthy supplements to his daily routine. Not to mention refraining from high intensity activity ( No more football!!! ). Because he still had symptoms and proof there was in fact a brain injury we decided to treat him with 40 more dives in the chamber. In Sept 2017 my son started his senior year of high school. Although he has occasional headaches when he over exerts himself he is definitely on the road to recovery. Without a doubt my son would not have been able to heal his brain and make such a successful recover without the HBOT or lifestyle change. He also leaned that there was not a quick fix ...healing takes time. We also witnesses other patients have amazing outcomes after their treatments. The team at The Hampton Roads Hyperbaric Therapy became like family. They made us feel safe and comforted during this traumatic event. My son still reaches out to Sarah to check in and ask random questions ~Jill
