It's official -- as of last night, I have a new obsession.
We saw a stellar (and I don't use that word lightly) performance of "Carmina Burana" by Carl Orff. It was performed at the First Congregational Church in Pasadena by the Pasadena Master Chorale, with members of the Washington Middle School Glee Club. I got chills several times, including the thunderous opening, "O Fortuna," complete with percussion instruments and crashing cymbals. During the up-tempo segments, the singers became animated, really getting physically as well as vocally into the soul of the piece.
The church venue, with its (I'm guessing) very early 1900's architecture and vaulted ceilings, was an aesthetically and acoustically perfect setting for the Chorale's performance.
Before, during, and after the concert, I looked around, and was so gladdened by the sight of attendees of all ages and walks of life. What a wonderful way to spread this art form to the community, and enrich its collective life! I'm already making plans for us to attend the Brahms Requiem in June, and to make a donation for the Chorale's ongoing support. read more
