The first line went fast and at first she wasn't too friendly. But after cracking some jokes I got to see her break down her wall a bit. Why do DMV employees feel the need to be cranky? Sure you come across jerks, but everyone does. Coming from Oregon.(where they are fast and super nice) I realize CA dmv people really need to lighten up. I've been to DMV many, many times in my life at various locations throughout the state. I understand that any time I visit the DMV without an appointment, a long wait is to be expected. This particular branch of DMV is a rather small location, and they have an adequate number of staff. Therefore I was confused at why I had to wait such a long time (nearly 3 hours) for a simple monetary transaction (paid my registration fees) that took me less than 30 seconds to complete. Apparently the clerks behind the counter have to double up and pull additional duty as driving instructors. So what happened is I would see the clerk behind the window helping people for 30 to 45 minutes. Then she would disappear for about half an hour, then return to help people for another 30 to 45 minutes then disappear for roughly a half hour again. The third time she disappeared I actually followed her, and this was when I saw her get into a car and take some one on a driving test. This was happening with at least one other clerk as well. Based on this, I would not recommend this particular branch. read more

After visiting both the Lompoc and SLO DMV offices multiple times in the past year, I could not ask for a better DMV than the Paso office. Plenty of parking, the staff are pleasant, and even without an appointment, the wait to check-in is minimal (despite having an appt, we inadvertently stood in the wrong line - yet were amazed at how quickly we still were served, given our experience with the insanely long check-in line at the SLO DMV). The behind-the-wheel drive test examiner was calm and friendly and at ease, unlike other examiners my daughter experienced. She confidently and adeptly passed her driving test with a perfect score, and I cannot recommend this DMV more. Worth the drive for a good experience. read more

I have been in several DMV'S but in all even with a long wait most of the people behind the counters seem to be busy. Always makes that the people standing around talking and laughing aren't going to a window to help someone waiting. But happened to be in Paso Robles and to go to DMV 1 lady working the crowd wrapped around the building and helping inside. 1 lady working a window. Other people there but not to help people. Although coming to the DMV is never really a "fun" experience, this DMV office makes it much more pleasant. The last few times I've been here I've gone without an appointment and haven't had to wait longer than 20-30 minutes. The employees I've interacted with were all pretty nice and helpful. The last time I went in, I needed to pay a license fee but had no paperwork with the car's license number, and could only give the lady my name and address. Even though the office was pretty busy, she was so nice to look all up all the info for me and without any sense of irritation on her part. I would of course recommend an appointment any time you visit a DMV office, but even without one the experience here is still pretty painless. And just a tip, if you don't have an appointment, before you go down to the office, you can go to DMV.com and look at the current estimated wait time for the Paso (or any) DMV office to g I've been to several DMV offices in larger cities and without an appointment you may wait for hours and the employees are stressed and usually not too friendly or helpful. We're lucky to have a small DMV office with friendly and helpful employees. read more

My husband waited for an hour and a half to pay a bill. When he went up to the counter the guy looks at the paper, looks at his computer and says "oh, that's not good." Then he proceeds to tell my husband that they cannot accept the payment but that it has to be mailed to Sacramento. Um, the paper clearly said to make the payment in person at a local branch, but Ok. So,he tells my husband he can't accept the money but that it must be postmarked that day. So, another 30 minutes at the post office, wonderful! Being that we didn't trust that guy at the local branch, we called the Sac branch of the DMV to let them know the payment was on it's way and guess what? They said that he absolutely should have taken the payment. Lame. What a waste of time because of someone's incompetence. read more

Where do I begin to tell you my nightmare? I went in back in Feb to renew my CDL. I figured...I would start process for my new I.D card that will be required in 2020,thinking they are 2 separate things. I was missing a document & was told to come back with a list of handwritten items by the clerk,with her signature,showing what I need to for the new I.D. card. I continued with what I thought was completing my renewal of my drivers license by doing the eye test & paid my $35.00 fee. I was handed my temporary license & out I went. Three months later when I hadn't received my new license,I called Sacramento to find out what the hold up was. This person was extremely rude & condescending & said,"I hadn't completed the eye test."I told him,"I had at DMV,"then he proceeded to tell me,"I hadn't completed my application for the I.D card...now they tell me!!!anyways...don't know where he got the eye test excuse? So, I decide to finish up the I.D mess with my list in tow & wait in line thinking I can't wait to get this done. I get up to the counter & clerk says," I now need my marriage certificate" I told her to look at the list the other clerk made & signed...she never wrote that on the list,UGH!!! She apologizes & says she can see it was their fault & set me an appointment for another day. Well... I come in thinking this should be a breeze now. But,NO! clerk says my last name is 2 words because there is a capital in the middle. I told her it is not ! She argues with me...that the way I sign my name on my social security card looks like 1 word. Are you kidding me??? Now they are telling me how my name should look when I sign it, after I've been doing this for 32 years OMG,craziness!!! She goes to back & says I dont think this is going to work & has their boss look at it. Then she comes back & asks me if I got an okay from my eye Dr. I'm like...What the hell are you talking about??? I was never told I needed a letter from my eye doctor,I don't even where glasses. She tries to force me to take another eye test in which I told her NO!because I already did it the first time I came in... how else could I have got my temporary license? Then she asked for my original letter from DMV for when I first came in...seriously lady...don't you know I handed it to you the first day when I was renewing my license & never got it back? I don't know what they are smoking in their back room?but,I have never been through so much crap in all my natural born citizen days! As far as a California State office of something, this place was very good to me each of the three times I have used it! It is easy parking, nice staff, and with no appointment, I was able to be served it 10 - 15 minutes and I am quite pleased with that. The License place collection on the wall is quite a nice addition. An for car people, is worth a drop in. The place sure beats some of the lines from SLO office. I'm a positive person. I do my best to spread kindness, tolerance, and acceptance throughout the communities I live and work in. And, specifically, I've spent the past many years suggesting to my audiences (I teach in several colleges) that we lighten up on the poor DMV people, and that we should quit promoting jokes and memes about how mean they are. AND THEN...I encountered the meanest, most nasty, unhappy, unpleasant, unhelpful woman I've ever met in my entire lifetime at the Paso Robles DMV! It was almost unbelievable, like some sort of SNL skit about "the mean DMV lady." I went in to accomplish three specific tasks, and this woman seemed to take personal pleasure in being rude, surly, and cuttingly sarcastic throughout the entire duration of our interaction. She was quick (and eerily joyful) to point out my paperwork errors (some of what I was doing was quite complicated), and was literally mute when I asked her for help in how to correct my mistakes. (At one point, another DMV employee--a very nice woman--looked over at me sympathetically, as if to say, "I'm sorry she's treating you this way...") I went away vowing to never go to the Paso Robles DMV again--which is probably exactly what this mean woman wanted, but why should I take abuse like that? So I went to the SLO DMV the next day, where I was treated with friendliness, dignity, and helpfulness. (Thank you, SLO DMV!) I'm very disappointed that the Paso Robles DMV management would allow one of its employees to treat a customer this way, which only reinforces the negative reputation that most DMV offices have throughout the US. I believe that DMV offices--even though they technically have a "captive audience" of customers--should be required to practice reasonable customer service skills, that DMV employees should be required to take customer service classes, and, perhaps most importantly, that rude, obnoxious DMV employees should not be tolerated by the management. Take my advice: head to Paso Robles if you want to be abused, but head to SLO if you actually want assistance. read more

I needed to renew my drivers license. I am handicapped and required special accommodations. The office was easy to find. There are two handicapped parking spaces in front and I was able to get one. They have a red carpet that indicates to wait in this line for assistance. I was given a number and waited only a very short time to be assigned to an employee. She was very pleasant and professional. I provided the requested items and paid my fees. They have a special place for handicapped to take the written test. I was missing one required document, so I will need to return for the new ID license. But extremely pleased with the service! read more

I'm 75 years old (next month) and handicapped. I walked into the DMV office in Paso Robles on a Tuesday morning to renew my CA DL. I had my paperwork, check and all necessary documents. I arrived to take my written exam and was given a number, told to wait. I did, I waited and waited, only one window was open for service. Almost two hours later, I had to use the bathroom. I went in and came out in less than three minutes. When I came out of the bathroom, I saw that my number had been called, I saw the window number, ran over as they were calling the next number. They had not even started processing the next person, I ran up and told the man behind the counter I'm here and that I was in the bathroom. He told me I had to go back to the information line. I did and was told I had to go to the back of the line and start over!!!!! Are you kidding me? I've been waiting now two hours, I was just in the bathroom! Too bad for me, I had reschedule a new appointment or wait another two hours. So when did human kindness disappear! Where is the competence? This is not the way to treat people. The woman at the information counter could not have cared less, the man at my window could not have cared less. I get it, they have rules to follow, to deal with, but this was devastating. I've had pretty good experiences with this office in the past. Making an appointment is a great option and guarantees one the ability to pretty much zip through the process... That is until today! A few exceptions to every rule though. I agree with previous comments on the unnecessary rudeness of some. Some employees clearly don't want us there (or they don't want to be there) and we don't want to be there either, so why can't we all make the most of it?? Is nice just too much to expect? I am a person with a disability, a problem hip that renders me unable to stand for a length of time in one spot. I thought I was taking care of that problem by making an appointment to renew my license. They were not busy and I felt confident this would go quickly. Everyone I encountered was pleasant (mostly everyone).... The lady (lady number 1, very nice) at the front window gave me a number and directed me where to take my test and how to do it. It went quickly... Took the test via computer and then was told to get my photo taken. This by the way was done by a very nice red haired lady (number 2 lady). Everything was going well and quickly... I was then told to go back over near the computer test area in a hallway where bathrooms are located.... at the other side of the building. Seems they are out of room and unorganized a bit. There were two lines with several people in them. I didn't see until much later, there was tape on the floor at the front of each line stating what the line was for. No one else saw them either since people were standing on the taped areas. I also realized from standing there for some time that some other people in the lines had no appointments yet were being taken by their status in line. We were all clumped together! There was one lady (lady number 3) taking care of all of us one at a time. There was no place to sit which is what I badly needed. I was increasingly in more discomfort standing there and ended up in line for over 25 minutes. When I got to the window I expressed my concern to lady number 3 that I had an appointment and have a disability and was at that point in pain having to stand for over 25 minutes. She didn't care one bit! She said Maam... You have to tell us if you have a disability and an appointment and you could have gone right up to the next window. Like I was magically suppose to know that, further no one in the lines who had appointments knew that either. I told her I was directed to this area and was given no options for that. There were no signs posted either for appointments nor disabled persons any where around the area. And further it was acknowledged at the front window when I arrived that I had an appointment thus I fully and rightfully expected I was being directed to the correct place. She again repeated that they couldn't help if we don't say something. Her tone was cold and sarcastic. It was as if she didn't hear a word I said. With that I told her when you first come into the entrance of the DMV there is a window that says, for disabled and for appointments. I said why would you post a sign there if we must ask for help on the other side of this building?? She was nasty, no empathy whatsoever, while she was sitting comfortably on a chair at window #1. She clearly attempted to make this the customers responsibility and not the DMV's. Why should we make appointments if it doesn't seem to matter to the staff?? Sorry, but It is the DMV's responsibility to be able to clearly direct us to the proper areas, making sure appointments are respected as well as those with disabilities. We don't make the rules, you do! I did my part by making an appointment, now you do yours. Really, Is this expecting too much DMV?? And for the obviously miserable maam lady, I hope you learn to respect people more and very much hope you never find yourself having to stand in pain to do your job, unable to sit down... This DMV takes Cesar Chavez's birthday off. It is so difficult to get an appointment with the 1-877 number that I ended up going on the last possible day, my birthday. The appointment process made everything quick! My disappointment comes with the person who took the photo! Five years ago, the person who took the photo let me look at it and approve it. Well this woman did NOT. My photo looks like a mug shot. Now I have to look at that for 5 years. I went on 4-27-15. By the way, the license came in one week! Giving this DMV 5 stars cause living in two places one being the Bay Area (Fremont) to go to DMV there is a complete nightmare the line literally goes around the building and moves very slow , so when we are in town in our other home we go to this DMV where the wait is on no comparison to Fremont dmv. So to start off my experience today everything was going well up until the lady that drives with me to take my behind the wheel test gets in. Everything going good, start the car, drove forward & I HAD TO ASK HER WHICH WAY I WAS GOING because she was worried about something else. As it goes on she tells me to pull over & park. Which I look over & see that when she told me there were cars on the side of the road. She clearly was worried about the clipboard when I was looking in my mirrors at the time so I COULD PARK. At the point I was getting nervous even more than I already was. On the way back to the DMV she asked me to turn, well when I was turning a car was coming straight at us, not slowing down, & this lady yells at me saying, "GO!" Long story short she failed me because of an idiot not slowing down while I was turning, then fails me because she claims(she wasn't paying attention) I didn't look in my mirrors. In her words "dangerous maneuvering". Another thing is that all she told me was what I did wrong the whole time, nothing of what I did right. read more

Sorry to have to write this. As former state workers, my husband and I are both familiar with the opinion many hold of public employees in general, and we feel they are often unfairly maligned. But twice in the last month, we've dealt with DMV staff at Paso Robles who clearly didn't know their jobs and couldn't answer our questions - and had no inclination to try to find out the answers from someone who could. It's too long a story to go into here, but our issues pertained to 1) exchanging an existing personalized license plate for a different style, and 2) a letter regarding the REAL ID residency requirements fiasco. The solution DMV came up with on the second issue is actually very good - except that they had a typo in our address, so we could not simply sign the letter they sent and return it in order to verify, as was intended. And the woman at the counter in Paso was unable AND unwilling to help straighten it out. And when I instead tried to use their telephone "Call Center," as instructed in the letter, it turned out that topic is not one of the five you can select when seeking assistance, and there is NO option for speaking with a live agent. The woman who's been running the entire department for many years recently retired amid the Motor Voter and REAL ID disasters; maybe having new blood at the very top will result in a much-needed transfusion in the local offices. read more

I went into the DMV today, though my service was not horrible the service that I saw provided by the woman at the check in counter was horrible. The woman first of all was not dressed for work, she was wearing spandex jeans, an overly tight pink t-shirt and her hair on top of her head in a hair tie. The woman was apparently upper management at some point and was the auditor that day as apparent by her interactions with customers. I have never seen an employee at any business be so rude, cold, and unwilling to explain her self as this DMV employee. I waited for 45 minutes which was not unexpected but the worst part of my visit was watching her repeatedly treat other humans as if they were no better than the dirt on her dirty non work appropriate shoes! read more

Absolutely the worst DMV. Of the six service windows available, only 1 was staffed. Wait inline 20 minutes to get a number and another 2-3 hours to see the one and only clerk helping those with numbers. And the staff really doesn't care about getting people through quickly.
