They allow you to sample the food to see if you like it. Which is a bonus to sample before you make your decision to purchase. Heard some good things about this place and wanted to see for myself. It smelled like a home cooked meal upon walking in the establishment. It was very cozy, not a lot of space and nowhere to dine in, so expect to take the meal to go. Cashier was pleasant and friendly. Everything I wanted was sold out at 5 pm. I settled for the smothered pork chops, Mac and cheese and dressing. Food is packed right in front of you and they are very generous with the portions. My "plate" (styrofoam container) was so heavy it cracked! I was given a second bag to catch spillage. I commented that this would be dinner and probably lunch tomorrow. The cashier and serving gentleman chuckled and agreed. I saw the passion tea and ordered that also. Now, the taste. The pork chops are delicious. Gravy is good, meat is tender and not too salty. They're good size chops, I didn't finish one. Max and cheese is very cheesy. Well seasoned and noodles are firm and not mushy. The dressing is not it for me. It's a little "mealy" and not much flavor. I can taste the sage but it feels undercooked to me. The cornbread muffin is okay. Not as sweet as jiffy mix, but too sweet to be hot water cornbread. I will return and try some other sides. Prayerfully next time they'll have the turkey wings or fried ribs I wanted to try. Wife heard about this place from a friend and wanted to stop in, so we did. Located in Oak Park, in a stip mall on two main street, North and Harlem. You have to enter the strip mall lot off North bound Harlem or Easbound North. Trying to enter the lot any other way is going to more than a chore with the traffic in this area. We stopped shortly after opening, so eveything was freshly made and hot. Service was friendly and inviting. We were treated like long-time customers, although this was out first time. When ordering, we noticed how tight the space was. There were two seat to wait but there wasn't much more room. We ordered and waited in the car. I'm also thinking you could phone in your order as well. The set-up was buffet style with fried foods prepared to order. One protein comes with 2 sides. They offered a wide variety of sides. My two sides were cabbage and mac and cheese. Other sides offered: dressing, garlic mashed potatoes, sweet potatoes, green beens, rice and gravy, collard greens, red beans and rice. My protein was beef short ribs, all of which had just been freshly made and was kept warm. My wife opted for cabbage and sweet potatoes with the catfish. The order took about 20 minutes to prepare. Since it was our first time, we were offered to taste any side. This was a nice gesture and we appreciated the customer service. The taste: The beef ribs were tender and seasoned. The mac and cheese was excellent, not too cheese, with the perfect cheese crust on the top. The cabbage was also good but I would prefer it to be cooked longer. The portion size was perfect. I think the plate was well balanced. Just enough food. My wife let me taste her fish and it was perfectly crispy. Not fired hard......Crispy not crunchy. Say 4.5 Catfish - PERFECT. Super tender not overcooked, not greasy at all, nice seasoning. I learned to cook fish form my uncle who was a seafood chef at a high end restaurant and I love blackened catfish. This is as good as it gets. Mac n cheese - 4/5 maybe a little more seasoning but overall really tasty Collard greens - 4.5/5 well cooked, i like mine with a little more bacon flavoring Mashed potatoes - 5/5 buttery, peppery excellent Peach cobbler - 3/5 lil bit bland Sweet tea - I won't judge this because I hate sweet tea , but is super super sweet and I couldn't even stomach the sip I took. The food is really good! I got 2 pork chops, mac 'n cheese, greens, and a corn muffin. I wasn't a big fan of the greens but I still enjoyed my meal and will definitely be back. They fried my chops once I ordered, but the sides are already prepared. My food was hot and fresh. The restaurant itself small and clean; just be mindful that there's no seating. This is a great addition to the neighborhood. It is a carry out restaurant. They have delicious soul food. A few of my favorites were the catfish which was some of the best I've ever had with a good spice. The dressing is very flavorful, macaroni and cheese was a good texture and flavor, the greens were well done and the sweet potatoes were cinnamon sweet delicious. The mashed potatoes are garlicky as a note. My husband really enjoyed his smothered pork chops. They also have a sweet passion fruit tea that everyone enjoyed. The customer service was not good, I ordered 30mins ahead and I had to repeat my order several time before they completed my order. After waiting for my food it was not up to par. I have had to south side location 10 times and the food was amazing this location was no where near the same quality. I have been coming here for the past few months and Passion Eats has never let me down.I am always greeted with a warm welcome and professionalism from Shakira and she does an amazing job with the orders and call-ins.She always makes sure my order is visually and verbally correct every time and asks if anything else is needed before I leave.I had a previous Soul Food spot before but I have not been back to it since trying Passion Eats lol.The taste and value here is really unbeatable, especially in this economy. I have tried the majority of the menu and love everything that I have ordered.You get so much food for what you pay and I have never been disappointed with The Portion Sizes.You can't go wrong with their Amazing Fried Chicken,Baked Chicken, CatFish or Chops which are my go to for Dinners. I ordered food from this restaurant of 10/16/24 and The peach cobbler was absolutely the best I have ever tasted and the serving size was generous, a full 8 oz container. I had beans and cabbage and they were delicious also. The place is small but It tastes just like it could come from a mama's kitchen. I ordered the fried chicken, greens and dressing, it also came with a corn muffin. The greens and fried chicken were really good, freshly fried chicken. I realize everyone's taste with dressing varies so I'll try to be as objective as possible. The dressing was...well, not bad but it tasted like cornbread and broth, corn meall- ee at that. I would like for them to add more onions, some bell pepper, celery and a tad more sage. The side corn bread tasted like sweet boxed bread although it did not taste like the base cornbread used for the cornbread. The service was friendly and welcoming and they even offered a taste of something as a 1st time customer. The environment was clean. I would also recommend moving the chaffing trays for the sides to the back instead of at the front. Overall, I would eat there again and suggest you try it. read more
