We went in Sunday at around 12:30pm. Parking is limited. We were welcomed and told to seat ourselves. It was early enough that we had no problem finding a seat. First table was very wobbly so we quickly relocated. The interior is pretty basic with about a dozen tables with black tablecloths. Our waitress came over just a few minutes after we sat down to give us menus and take our drink order. She was pretty nonchalant and straight faced the entire time but got the job done. She even applied my father-in-law's senior discount without him having to ask. My husband, son and I all had the 1 entree meal with 2 sides - $16.99. The fried & smothered chicken is available daily Wednesday thru Sunday (closed Monday & Tuesday). My father-in-law ordered the 1 piece fried catfish fillet with 2 sides - $18.99. We also ordered peach cobbler and banana pudding -$5 each. The food came out fast and some of it was piping hot. Everything was very tasty especially the chicken and yams. The least favorite was the banana pudding but it was still not too bad. Solid soul food experience

I ordered the 2 piece catfish dinner that came with 3 sides and dessert. I got the dressing, Mac n cheese, and greens with banana pudding. The catfish was a 5/10. It was not as crispy as last time, and was bland. Definitely lacked some salt. The Mac n cheese was a 8.5/10. It was clearly baked, and very The greens were a 10/10. I prefer my banana pudding with a little more cookies, and not as much pudding but the flavor is definitely there so im going to give it a 9.5/10.

I wanted to love this place so bad but the food wouldn't let me. The restaurant was old but clean and the staff were pleasant but again the food just wasn't up to par. As someone whose family is from Monroe Louisiana and a current GA resident I assure you soul food doesn't taste this way. I read their health scores thankfully after I ate the food. I still wish this business the best. I'll come back after they tighten up.

Father-in-law found this spot on Groupon and recommended it to us. On a Friday night, no one wants to cook. We decided to go out and try this spot. We like Soul Food but don't often pay to have it. Quite frankly, I know how to cook Soul Food so I don't wanna pay for it. One of the those things were you like it a certain way. Boy am I glad that we tried this restaurant out. This food hit the spot on a cold Chicago night. For food we got pork chops and fried chicken. Those Smoothered Pork Chops were perfect. The gravy, the onions and the pepper were just 5/5 stars. Husband grabbed White Meat Chicken. He enjoyed his chicken. I tried some of it and it was okay. Would prefer more seasoning on the chicken skin. Sides were all delicious. I throughly enjoyed the mac & cheese, greens and dressing. My husband got the spaghetti and that was good too. Spaghetti reminded me of the bbq shack Spaghetti. That hits too on some white bread. Anyway...got side tracked. I would order my meal again. Cornbread needs some work. Drinks and service were good. Also super props for having a side of cranberry sauce (the canned kind), lol to go with my dressing. Dessert was an added plus, peach cobbler was delicious. Banana pudding was good but they used imitation banana pudding and would prefer just vanilla versus the imitation bannana pudding. All in all, local spot with good food. Covid19 precautions taken and enforcing vaccine mandates. Support local businesses. No regrets here. I am going to give this a 3.5 stars. Not quite 4 stars but I enjoyed my meal.

Never been here b4. Nice decir...old school. Nice area

New spot fir me. Greeted nicely by the family. Food was ready when we got there cuz it was originally ordered for takeout. Once we got here. Decided to sit down in the restaurant. Service was very good. Pleasant servers. My gurl ordered all sides....corn, lima beans, greens, mash potatoes. All good food. I ordered chicken with Mac n cheese and lime beans. Along with their peach cobbler. I will say their cobbler was one of the better ones we've had in a while. The chicken was good. The Mac reminded me of old school Mac. Overall, very good and I will be back

The restaurant is somewhat dark inside but they had The Little Mermaid cartoon on which was interesting. The service was good, friendly and prompt. We tried the baked chicken, jerk chicken and smothered pork chop. The seasoning was all very tasty but the baked chicken was a little dry. I loved the macaroni and cheese best. The green beans and greens were just okay. My husband loved the black eyed peas.

After my run on a nearby trail in River Grove I searched Yelp for what vegan restaurants were near, but didn't have any luck. Well at least luck finding anything that caught my eye which led me to seek out southern food restaurants as my taste buds craved as well. And lo and behold, 6978 Soul Food showed up being that it was nearby. The restaurant has a sports bar-like inner appearance rather than like a mom-and-pop restaurant which is what I imagined because of its options and its restaurant exterior. The restaurant does have its own parking area, but it is very slim. If you find yourself unable to find a parking spot there is still the option to park within the neighborhood along N Sayre Ave or possibly along W North Ave. After entering the restaurant, the waitress acknowledged me and took my order. I wasn't able to order just three sides because sides come with an entrée which is a meat option. The waitress worked with me allowing me to choose four sides (dressing, collard greens, mac & cheese and red beans & rice) w/ dessert (peach cobbler) because I wasn't interested in ordering meat which I am currently abstaining from. While waiting on my order I examined the menu which had a selection of southern food options. Every day, Tuesday thru Sunday the menu has featured meats which are slightly different each day. After a wait that I was not even concerned about, a different waitress asked me if I had ordered? What was my order? And what was my name to confirm the order. Moments later she came out with my order which now that I think about it should've come sooner, but oh well. As for the food, the food was decent! The mac & cheese didn't have much of a cheesy taste to it; the peach cobbler had more peach rather than crust, and the cornbread was very plain as though something was missing. I guess I had high expectations because what my taste buds craved I didn't taste which is no shade at this restaurant. As a rating I have to give it 3 1/2 out of 5 stars, but definitely not a 4 star. To conclude, I cannot say that I had a totally bad experience; it was just the food did not satisfy my taste buds. It was eatable and hell I did fall asleep right after eating it. I can't blame the run I went on before the visit nor the shower after my run, it was definitely the food, hehe. If I were to visit again I wouldn't mind trying their catfish which may have resulted in a different rating if I ordered it initially rather than just sides. ~Blessings~ Thomas G

This spot was incredible! My son and I were in town for the godzilla fest. We found this on Google. It was so good my son asked who is in the kitchen cooking! Next time I'm in the Chi I'm definitely coming back.

We were so elated with our selection! I just love their address signage. It's very inviting.

It was very cozy, not a lot of space and nowhere to dine in, so expect to take the meal to go. Cashier was pleasant and friendly. Everything I wanted was sold out at 5 pm. I settled for the smothered pork chops, Mac and cheese and dressing. Food is packed right in front of you and they are very generous with the portions. My "plate" (styrofoam container) was so heavy it cracked! I was given a second bag to catch spillage. I commented that this would be dinner and probably lunch tomorrow. The cashier and serving gentleman chuckled and agreed. I saw the passion tea and ordered that also. Now, the taste. The pork chops are delicious. Gravy is good, meat is tender and not too salty. They're good size chops, I didn't finish one. Max and cheese is very cheesy. Well seasoned and noodles are firm and not mushy. The dressing is not it for me. It's a little "mealy" and not much flavor. I can taste the sage but it feels undercooked to me. The cornbread muffin is okay. Not as sweet as jiffy mix, but too sweet to be hot water cornbread. I will return and try some other sides. Prayerfully next time they'll have the turkey wings or fried ribs I wanted to try. However the gravy from the pork chops on some mashed potatoes would be heavenly.

Seeing that Shake A Leg was not that far from where I live, I decided to drop in to check them out. I ordered catfish with sweet potatoes and macaroni and cheese. I give them high marks for the catfish. It was nicely seasoned and breaded enough to give a crust but not too much that it took away from the meatiness of the fish. Big ups on the crisp to the crust. The sides were perfect, which again I say they deserve high marks. The highlight dish for me was the Cajun pasta that I ordered with shrimp. This reminded me of the same that I enjoyed in Louisiana. There was the right amount of sauce so that the pasta was not drowning in it. The seasoning was neither salty nor overpowering nor all over the place. Plenty room for seating and spread out enough that people are not all on top of each other. I got there early, so it had not packed out as I'm sure it does later in the day. For nights that I don't want to cook, they may get my dollars. The food was certainly worth it.

We arrived and the parking lot was full but I squeezed into a street spot. The line was too the door but they were moving pretty fast. The decor is outdated but that's not what you come for. Loved the history reflected with the photos of customers including former President Obama, current Governor Pritzker and Mayor Johnson. The photos of Jesse Jackson before and after his health deteriorated shows the legacy of this community bedrock. There's also a spot to donate books. This place has changed so have realistic expectations. It is cafeteria style (to go) but you can sit down and eat from your styrofoam container. First the online menu was wrong. We were told that they don't have fish on Sundays. Honestly if I knew that beforehand I wouldn't have gone that day. I decided to get fried chicken, greens and dressing with a side of mac and cheese. The chicken was dry, the greens were a lil salty and the dressing was dry but tasty. I wish i had gotten the gravy on the side. The macaroni and cheese was yummy. My guy got the short ribs, greens and string beans. Like the greens the short ribs were a lil salty. The ribs were cooked to perfection. The meat fell off the bone and melted in your mouth. Overall, I would say try it for yourself. If you like things on the salty side this might be ideal. The meals come with a muffin. It was sweet and so soft that it fell apart in your hands. Please note that individual sides are $3.04 with tax which isn't too bad. You also only get one muffin nit two like the website says. I plan to return on a fish day but it probably won't be soon.
