I just had to visit Surf's UP - Maywood after discovering its collaboration with Good2Go Veggie which I have tasted at Vegandale, a vegan food and drink festival. Surf's Up serves a Good2Go product on their menu being the Shock N' Shrimp. When I discovered that, I just had to visit because since Vegandale I have been on the lookout for Shock N' Shrimp throughout Chicago. As a vegetarian, I am always on the hunt for plant-based foods. So, I chose and made my way to Surf's UP which sits within a short distance of the hospital I work at in Maywood. I ended up ordering their 8 Pieces Shock N' Shrimp which came with Fries, figuring that it would fill me up rather than the 3 Pieces Shock N' Shrimp. I always love ordering online via yelp because it is convenient! Most of the time my orders are completed upon my arrival or near complete. I encountered the issue of my order not going through via Grubhub, resulting in me having to call Grubhub to cancel. All went well with that process, and I was refunded in a timely manner by Grubhub. And at the time, the employee was patient, even when receiving the call from Grubhub. Since I was already onsite, I resumed the ordering process after the employee got off of the phone with Grubhub because I just had to have the Shock N' Shrimp. And no more than 10 minutes from the time I placed my order with the employee, he completed it, and I was well on my way. As for my food, the Shock N' Shrimp tasted wonderful! To complement the taste, I was given barbecue dipping sauce with them which I absolutely loved. And I just cannot go without mentioning the Fries which were not too overly seasoned. I enjoyed the Fries equally as I did the Shock N' Shrimp. With there being other items on the menu that I would love to try, I am very well open to visiting and ordering from Surf's UP - Maywood, or any other Surf's UP location again. While i don't get here as often as i like to, BUT WHEN I DO it doesn't disappoint. The meal was prepared and served with care. When I hear "your order will be ready in 15mins" I already know that it's being made to order..and guess what i like that! I dined in and grabbed a window seat for my lunch, the seating was decent, the music was soothing as I sat and destroyed my lunch! I am not sure why they serve the sauce (rhetorically speaking) because my shrimp were cooked to perfection and the wings were like being at a family member's house. Only went to the oak park location because I heard such good things about it.defiantly not the same caliper of food my Pobo was dry the fish had a smell to it. Fried shrimp were just ok, the grilled fish was absolutely delish! Wish they would have put more in the order. Eight Wings, 1 lb. Fish and Fries: I could get better wings at KFC or Uncle Remus. They were ok. Fries were not good at all. No seasoning and for some reason, the food was hot but the fries were cold. Fried Whiting: Good crisp on the breading BUT NO SEASONING whatsoever!!!!! I had to add so much hot sauce just to eat it. Fried Catfish: Seasoned well in a cornmeal breading. Very good! Banana Pudding/Peach Cobbler: Ordered but was told at the last minute TWICE that they had no desserts. They were also out of lobster and I was informed after I placed order and waited. Henny Jerk Sauce: 1.75 for a SMALLLLLLLLL cup. It was ok but not worth the markup. Literally it was about two tablespoons of sauce for almost 2 bucks! Fried Green Tomatoes: Best part of the meal! Hot, tart and season well. I would order these again The service was good and they were apologetic about the order mixups for I would like for them to be consistent between their different locations. This hole in the wall gave us old fries with old grease that tasted funny. When I called to tell them my food was cold and old tasting they responded everything is made fresh to order. But I find that impossible because the food wasn't ewarm to the touch at all. read more

Stopped in during early evening and was greeted by the friendly manager. He asked if I had been to this location before, I said no only OP. Ordered a 3 piece catfish dinner with 3 extra pieces and a side of Mac n cheese. He repeated my order at least 3 or 4 times to the cook before he left with a large catering order. Leaving me and the cook. At this point the cook tells me that the manager just left with all Mac and cheese and the rest of the catfish is still frozen. I've already waited a good 20 mins so I said no just give me a refund. It didn't seem like to cook could provide that as an option and subbed me chicken wings for the fish and the only side left of dirty rice which was not good. I got home and I only had one wing and catfish. Definitely disappointed and really should have called for a refund. This not how you should do business. read more

I was so disappointed because I wanted to support this business. However, I placed my order for yams and macaroni I was told my order would be bought to me. I waited and had to go back in for my order. That wasn't the problem when I went in I seen a gentleman putting my order in the microwave. You're charging 6.99 for small portions and food that is not fresh!! The macaroni was horrible I didn't even see cheese. Saw a sign for FRIED LOBSTER when driving to our hotel the other night and just had to stop by. They were super nice and let us take our time with the menu. They let us know about their special (Soulfood Sunday) and made some chitchat (us being our first time and out of town). They said it'd be about 15mins for our meal which was fine, atleast there was seating. They brought us some of the fried biscuits and no charge and they were awesome! By the time the food came it was hot, fresh (made from scratch) and SUPER flavoured. No blandness here. The lobster was juicy and pretty big chunks. Definitely a spot to checkout :) read more

Oh lucky day! I just happened to pass this location on my way to take my mother to physical therapy. When I first saw the sign I thought I had to be dreaming but when I turned around and went back past it, I realized it wasn't a mirage. And I must admit I got very happy. Having heard about this place and their wonderful food, I said I had to try them. Unfortunately I hadn't gotten the time to go to their other location in the Austin neighborhood, even though its not that far from me. When I saw this location I said I had to try it, but it was not open yet. So I ended up going someplace else to grab something to eat, I was too famished to wait. I did return though and tried the fried green tomatoes, and they were delicious. I am looking forward to my mothers next appointment with the physical therapist so that I can try some more of their delicious food. I will definitely do an update when I get to try more from their menu. First of all, my order was cancelled though a 3rd party app and I was Informed once I arrived to pick up my food. The person was very apologetic and quickly took our order, which was appreciated. After taking our order, the young man then informed us that they only accepted cash and that they were out chicken tenders (which was in the original order that was cancelled) , so I needed to find an ATM nearby .. I've gone to Surf's up many times for their fish, chicken and shrimp. I really like the fried biscuits. They've posted pics in Instagram of their Soul Food Sunday items so I decided to check them out since I didn't feel like cooking. This Sunday they had Cornish hens, baked chicken, fried chicken and the sides were candied yams, greens, mac and cheese and dirty rice. They were out of dressing. You get your meat and 3 sides so I got chicken wings and greens and since I had a taste for mac and cheese and I didnt want rice or yams so I got a double order of that. The wings and greens were good. The greens had a lot of smoked meat in them (so if you are a vegetarian and think you're just getting greens, that is not the case here). The mac and cheese was not that great. Could have been cheesier in my opinion. Nothing to break your neck over.. The people working there were very nice so I'll be back. This review is about their NEW Oak Park, IL. location. My co-worker visited the location in Maywood and loved it so we were very excited to see them open in the former Felony Franks location. I work in Downtown Oak Park and this was on my way home from work so I stopped because it was a Grand Opening. The cashier was very friendly and I ordered the Shrimp and Lobster Combo. The restaurant was very crowded and people were always coming and going but it looked like the cooks had everything under control. I am willing to wait for Lobster and since I never had one fried I was excited. A woman came over to me and offered a fried biscuit drizzled with Chocolate and dusted with Powder sugar, so good nice and warm, what a treat. When I received my order the gentleman was very nice and apologized for the wait, again no problem, its fried lobster! I left to drive home to the north side and had to stop and try my delicacies because it smelled so good and I wanted to eat it hot. WOW! not only did I get fries, small Coleslaw and a biscuit but 3 LOBSTER TAILS! 4 HUGE SHRIMP! I ate 2 Lobster tail and they were very fresh and tender, not at all gummy or rubbery. The shrimp was the biggest fried shrimp with tails on that I ever saw. I was in heaven. I saved the last 2 shrimp and lobster tail and treated my 94 year old Cuban neighbor to an awesome dinner. He was so happy because he loves lobster! This place is not it. It doesn't nearly compare to the Oak Park location. I gave this location many opportunities to redeem itself, but it just doesn't cut it. Firstly, the customer service is terrible. One day I went to order and they were closed an hour before closing time. The second time I was able to order, but they were out of fried green tomatoes. Talk about disappointed! At the OP location I literally order them every time I go. I ordered the catfish dinner during my second visit, it was good but not spectacular. They make orders fresh so that was a plus. Third time I visited, made me vow to never go back. I ordered online, and when I went to pick up my order the guy told me he didn't get the order! I thought he was joking, but he wasn't. He claimed the system was down, and they were about to close so he couldn't make the order! Let's just say that didn't fly with me at all. He got very unprofessional, and basically told me he wasn't making anything and to talk to the manager who just so happen to walk in. I explained it to him, who didn't apologize, and said the order was received but I guess the employee didn't know how to work the computer. This place is a small restaurant tucked in next to a shell station. When you first walk in you do not get a warm feeling that this place should even be open. Nevertheless I decided to order. Looking at the menu everything is way overpriced. This is one of those instances where just because you pay more does not mean it is better. Normally I don't complain about mediocre food, but this food way way bad. I paid $30 for 3 pieces of swamp tasting fish, a small dis of slaw that was ok at best, some brown rice that I could not eat because it must have sat all day and congealed and took the for of the dish it was placed in. 8 chicken wings and a pile of crap seasoned fries that were not good either. This food was way overpriced and to be honest I ended up having to throw most of it away. I don't understand how the food was this bad. Small little place, but lots of options! I got a fried lobster Po boy, and loved it! I was stuck in rush hour traffic for a 1/2 hour, but it was still warm when I got home. It consisted of two succulent pieces of grill catfish seasoned to perfection over sautéed tender baby spinach, kale and vibrant colors of red, green, and yellow peppers and onion... Fried fish, grilled shrimp and fries is my go to meal, once or twice a week. I had a spot I would go to in Arkansas but when I moved here I had trouble finding somewhere that's actually good and reasonably priced. I found Surf's Up after trying a couple of places and I haven't been anywhere else since. If you're not into fried foods, they have several grilled options so you'll definitely find something. Aside from the good food (that's ALWAYS made fresh) is the customer service. They're so personable and most of all patient. It's hard to find that with most businesses in the area. DON'T ORDER DELIVERY (GrubHub) FROM HERE IF YOU ACTUALLY WANT FOOD. On 3 separate occasions I tried to order from them. In all 3 cases they took the order, sent me a confirmation notice, sent me a notice saying my order was being prepared and then ultimately got a call saying they couldn't deliver. I would like to offer a review on the food but I didn't get the chance. After seeing ads on both Restaurant.com and Groupon I wanted to try this local cajun place. But before I could order he saw my coupon and said "we stopped taking those". Clearly, they were active on both sites and getting the promotion. Groupon was even featuring them that day. If you want to stop the program, pull your ad and honor what has already sold. That crap annoys me and speaks to the owners ethical standards. I left and decided to go to Don Alfredo up the road in Melrose without a coupon as they previously honored certificates they offered happily. Too bad.
