I figure the raving reviews by locals should mean something, and thankfully, I was right!! I won't call this a small bakery, as inside it is rather big with many tables. We wandered in, admiring all the pastries and bread they have, and I am sure looked very much out of place. To our delighted surprise, the owner came up to us and asked in excellent and polite English how she can be of assistance. She told us their specialty is pão da avó (which is in fact recommended by one reviewer) so we ordered that, plus a few other items to try. My husband loves pão da avó (which translates to grandma's bread) and he declares this to be excellent, much better than all the other places we've tried so far, including the much-scorned-by-locals A Padaria Portuguesa (even the uber drivers tell us to avoid that!) The owner told us that unlike the chain who uses frozen dough, here they make everything fresh, from scratch, starting at 3 in the morning. Some of the bread we got were still warm. For me I was delighted that they have ovos moles, a specialty from Aveiro much further north, the chestnut eggs, and the chocolate salami, to satisfy my sweet tooth. Needless to say, like any pastelaria in town, they offer the pasteis de nata. The owner even offered us one to try! The bread is ridiculously inexpensive, €2-3 for one kilo! We ended up getting a bunch of this and that, to fill up any luggage space we may have. Surprise again, the owner has some beautifully printed hexagonal tubes for us to put the egg tarts in, so they can survive the trip home! And oh, they are open on Sundays too!

I thought after Pasteis de Belem I wasn't going to get a pastel de nata that good again, but that's…read moreuntil I came here. The one from here was absolutely amazing. The layers of pastry on the outside were super thick - the most amount of layers I've seen on the double-digit ones that I've eaten. This makes the crunch earth-shattering, but still so easy to bite through. The pastry layers cascade down into the center, creating ripples of individual crunches along the way that is so immensely satisfying to consume. But what's truly spectacular is the inside. Upon the first bite, the custardy center oozes out like molten lava. You better make sure you have a plate under this, because the bright yellow goo is as addicting to taste as it is dangerous to your hands or clothing. The flavor is simply perfect - just the right amount of sweetness, citrus, and egginess. It's honestly unbelievable how good and irresistible this is. Comparing it to Pasteis de Belem, I think I would actually put this slightly over. The extra layers and the more liquidy center just do it for me. That's an iconic place, but comparing simply on what I liked better, I think this takes the cake (or tart). Overall, pretty close to the best baked good I've ever had. 9.75/10

This was the first place I came to eat something in Lisbon! A custard tart for lunch! I can't tell…read moreyou how right the foodie's videos were about the original place where the pastel de nata originated. Actually it was better than the claims! I "ubered" out to Belem from my hotel. There was a small line up but it moved quickly. Cute and quaint place in blue and white. We walked across the street to a park to enjoy them. The pastry was so flaky that it flaked off very easily. The pigeons were aware of this and stood guard for any fallen morsels. The custard was so smooth and creamy and you could see the heat bubbles! I may have to go back for more!

They were seriously so good! And it sort of made my first bite more of a whole experience. Yes, the line here can be a bit long. But again, I think in a way it sort of added to the fun/overall experience of it. Considering the popularity, I don't think the wait was too terrible. Would I come here every day or every time I wanted pastel de nata? No. There are countless other spots that are amazing too! But I feel like this one was worth it once! The nata came out nice and warm, with a creamy flavor, a fluffy but firm texture, and a caramelized sweetness with bit with that hint of eggy savory-sweetness, too. The crust was flakey. I decided to eat inside and I also feel happy with that choice. The decor was cute and very "Lisbon"- lots of blues and whites. I also ordered a latte which was nice and had whipped cream with cinnamon, which paired really nicely with the nata actually.
