Perfect place to have breakfast! I was visiting Lisbon for work and staying at the doubletree close by. My boss loves pastel de nata and we were on a mission to eat them every chance we had. He found this little cafe and we walked on over. This place is classic, beautiful chandeliers in the ceiling, mirrors on the walls, gold trimmings. You can either order and eat at the counter or you can get a table. We opted for a table which was great because we were able to look at the menu in English. There is a case full of all different kinds of pastries as well. We ended up getting two different kinds of breads and a pastel de nata and two Americanos. The pan de deus was my favorite with the sugar on top. The bread was airy and fluffy and delicious when dipped into the coffee. Service was fast and the place was clean. read more

Landing in a foreign airport unsettling enough...sleepless, hungry and blurry eyed. The waft of fresh French pastries redirected our attention to this café on the concourse caught the attention of a majority of our senses. Most polished, black and white tiled Versailles offered a clear array of sandwiches, beverages and seating options-albeit some occupied as 'sleeper sofas' for weary wanderers. So this is a delayed review--going thru my drafts and trying to write the ones I missed a while back! Came in April 2022 for a light morning snack based on seeing good reviews. Based on the items I ordered, everything was just passable. Maybe I'm not really appreciating the difference in textures between similar pastries in different countries, but even compared to several other bakeries and cafes in Lisbon, this was my least favorite. (Overall outside of pasteis de nata, I found pastries and baked goods in Portugal to be a bit drier, breadier, and sweeter than some other countries.) The chocolate croissant I ordered used melted chocolate sprinkles on top and inside, and the bread was laminated on the outside but kinda dense and dry on the inside, no airy pockets, just bready. The palmier tasted a bit stale, like when a crispy cookie has been sitting out and softened. The croquettes were average. The espresso was pretty normal. I sat outside since it was a nice day, they had a number of tables and patrons dining outside. They seemed to be understaffed bc it took a while for the server to come out and take my order, though the food came pretty quickly once ordered. Inside it's a very old-school feel, very ornate with many mirrors and liquor shelves along the wall. Not sure about prices now though will say in 2022 they were very reasonable. read more

I heard this is the only place that has chocolate pastel de nata. I didn't see it in the case and asked about it. They said it's not something they always have, the last time he's seen it was 2 months ago. He suggested the chocolate cake since I asked for the chocolate pastel. So I got that and a coffee and coffee with milk. The chocolate cake was very rich but rather thin I wish the chocolate part was twice as thick. The crust on the bottom was also chocolate. The chocolate cake and coffee came out to 5.95€ I thought that was quite pricy at least compared to Porto. I guess I'll find out in the next few days as it was only my first day in Lisbon. read more

I love the overall service in this restaurant. We had to wait a couple of minutes to get seating but it was in the middle of lunch time. The two servers were on the lookout for us and as soon as a table opened up we sat down I had a double expresso and it was really nice and strong. I also wanted to try queen cake because that's a seasonal item and my friend got the Hungarian cookies with chocolate. The queen cake was good, it's just a little dry so I focused on the cookies. They were delicious and nice and soft. I especially like the chocolate with the shortbread. We actually brought some home to have in the apartment and I wish we had gotten more. I would definitely come back for the service, the ambiance the nice strong coffee and heavenly cookies. This is a very popular place with a lot of people coming in to pick up delicious desserts for the holidays. This was my first of several stops for pastel de nata, and it wasn't bad. The interior is bright and lively, a great way to get the day started. There were many different options for pastries, and the almond pastel was another one we tried. The tart came out cold; it's premade and sitting behind the counter until picked up for orders. I guess you have to ask for it to be heated, and it was on the sweeter side, but the crust is nice and flakey but holds together decently well, and the egg custard tasted great with cinnamon and a cappucino. I would like to try some of the other options though, as I was told that you cannot go wrong with any selection here. read more

I had a 4 1/2 hour layover in Lisbon and decided to leave the airport to see what I could find that was in decent distance and wouldn't stop me from catching my flight home. After googling quite a bit, I came across this establishment and I was very happy to say that the takeout line on the Sunday was actually a lot less than the seating line. I got half a dozen Natas and a Nutella filled doughnut. I'm so impressed at the level of freshness because they not only lasted my flight home but my fridge until five days. They were on a celebration for their 97th year in business so we had to try it out. However, the pastries were so so. The egg tarts were very sweet and soggy. Befitting the name, the interior of this pastry shop is rather grand, with all the wall mirrors, chandelier and old world decor. They have a very long counter, so it was exciting to see trays after trays of different types of pastries as you walk along the long glass case. However, maybe because they need to make so many pastries to make the cases look good... I don't find them very fresh even though we went fairly early in the morning (flight from US arrived at 6ish am, left luggage at hotel and went searching for breakfast). The pastais de nata were cold! We had coffee and tried a few things we randomly picked from the cases, not quite knowing what they were till we bite into it. Gorgeous, old-school place with an even more gorgeous pastries display. It's cool because they have both desserts and whiskey, so it's my husband's wet dream. He and I shared a chocolate croissant, and it was delectable. It tasted so fluffy and fresh and the chocolate doesn't taste like Hershey's crap because it's real chocolate. My hotel was located far outside of the tourist zones of Lisbon, but the added bonus is being able to see a real local neighborhood. Pastelaria Versailles bakes up dozens and dozens of different, beautiful, and delicious pastries...and most are priced just about €1! As in €1.10 or €1.25! Or even less than €1! Even the famous Portugese Pastel is only €1.10. Sadly I was only in Lisbon for 2 nights, so I only had enough stomach to try a few tasty things here. Since its located outside the tourist zones, the staff here barely speak any English, but they were still friendly enough. Everything is displayed in a long glass case alongside the equally enormous and elegant bar. Just smile and point to what you want. The gorgeous old world interior feels like a time warp back to the 1930s-40s. Each visit I was the lone lost tourist surrounded by locals. As the name would suggest, beautifully decorated interiors with French flair, a well stocked wall shelving with fine liquors, and beautifully presented pastries. In addition to the delicious nata, I tried some vanilla and strawberry gelato. Top notch service, welcoming ambiance and enough to have a casual conversation while enjoying a coffee or tea. I plan to try breakfast next time as it is highly recommended. Well worth the trip here if you visit Lisbon. read more

This is a distant third behind Belem and Manteigaria. It's a nice enough place with good hot chocolate, alcoholic beverages for the adults and more dessert choices than anyone knows what to do with. I opted for one of the natas and a small glass of the cherry Portuguese Brandy, which actually wasn't bad. As far as natas go, this wasn't even close to the other two, but it was still good. I feel like they just don't do the volume that some others do, so maybe that has something to do with it. I did have a nice time here and it's a sit down place that is beautiful. read more

This place has a very old school feel, and there are much fewer tourists here since it's farther from the main tourist area. We happened to be staying nearby, so it was convenient for us. They do full meal service and have lots of pastries, but I had read about their pastel de nata. You can eat on the patio or get a table or eat standing at the counter, which is what we opted for since we didn't want a full meal. The pastry case has all the items on display, so you can walk along it and see what you're interested in. - Pastel de nata: more like vanilla pudding - too sweet for me. The crust had good layers / flakiness - Chocolate pastel de nata: like chocolate pudding in the filling - unusual - Shrimp fritter: smelled better than it tasted - not a lot of shrimp, thicker batter - Veal croquette: the clear winner of the croquettes - freshly fried, meaty, flavorful - Cod croquette: classic With 2 espressos, it was €7.70 for everything - pretty reasonable! It had an old Viennese cafe feel, with lots of locals and an older crowd. It's worth checking out for the experience. Definitely try the veal croquette! read more

If I lived here I would probably be here every morning for a quick breakfast. Other info / details: Portuguese pastry shop. Has a long counter for quick eating, but table seating is available as well (probably at a higher price / table fee). They speak a little english, but try some Portuguese, it helps. Wonderful place, we actually had breakfast here twice during our visit. We arrived for breakfast looking for something more substantial than pastries and were rewarded with the finest bacon and eggs I think I have ever enjoyed, a wonderful omelette and great cafe con leche. The waiters were wonderful on both occasions whether we communicated in English, Spanish or our broken Portuguese, they made is feel very welcome. We loved the pastries and fruit as well, especially the chocolate pastel de nata, the only chocolate ones we found in the city. This is my favorite pastelaria in Lisbon. I try to make it here every time I am in town. When you walk in the door, you feel as if you have been transported back into into the 1900's but in a good way - the decor it without equal and the food and service matches. Pastries and the usual assortment of finger foods are all excellent. This place is not as crowded as the usual tourist traps downtown and better in every way. Definitely a must while in Lisbon and its only a short walk from the Sheraton and Saldanha Metro station. read more

Luckily, this was pretty close to the Sheraton, so we went here for breakfast one morning and were pleasantly surprised by the lovely, vintage interior--love the Victorian old shop vibe. This place offered what I call a "carbonanza" --a bonanza of carbs. Every form of pastry, bread and dessert you could dream up can be yours here. The #1 thing we went for was the chocolate pastel de nata, which we saw nowhere else, and is, as you might imagine, awesome. Not sure if I was there on an off day, as others raved about the croissants, so I was expecting some Parisian amazing croissants, but it was really dry and underwhelming. That's why it didn't get 5 stars from me. Loved our waiter. He anticipated that we might pay with a 20, and when we did, he took one tray off the top, to reveal the exact amount of change, which felt like a magic trick. We all laughed and it just made the stop more memorable. He didn't speak English, but we managed just fine. If you want to find one of the vintage/ historic spots with desserts that is not flat-ass packed with people, this is a good alternative. Loved the ambiance of the place and being able to sit outside. Came here for breakfast and they were accommodating to serve eggs from the lunch menu. The decor inside is traditional and classic European with dim lighting and glass chandeliers on the ceiling. The bread basket served carried an assortment of freshly baked breads that were delicious to eat just by themselves. The host was helpful with recommendations and was very friendly. Us speaking English was not an issue at all. The fresh cheese sandwich on the breakfast menu is a must try. The ham and eggs scrambled was ok. They also have a bakery with a wide array of options to choose from. We tried the chocolate cake which goes on the have to try list and the custard cakes they served complimentary were excellent too with the custard inside being really light. read more

My first meal in Portugal was here and it was delicious. This restaurant was recommended to me by a friend from Spain, who once got stuck in Lisbon and happened upon this place. I was super excited to try it after my 40 minute walk from the hotel in slightly drizzling weather. I was not disappointed! Used to be "one of the most go" places in Portugal, unfortunately, the quality of the food has gone done quite a bit, some cakes and pastries still hold up, but the same can't be said about other aspects. We were staying in Saldanha, and wouldn't you know we HAD to walk by this shop to get to metro every day :) Truth is besides the McD across the street, a steakhouse and a burger place, I didn't really see any other food option nearby. We ate at Pastelaria Versailles almost daily during our 4-day stay in the area. 1st day we sat outside and had lunch. The "steak with egg in sauce" was fabulous! Their lunch menu is on the pricier end (€10+ for alot of the dishes). But their coffee & pastries are very reasonble - hence they're packed during breakfast time on weekends. The inside, as already mentioned, is gorgeous. We never really learnt what was the correct order of ordering. There always were people at the counter ordering (to eat at the counter or to-go). We ordered at the counter, but we would then sit down. Amazingly a waiter would then bring us the right items every time. We ordered at the counter only because we could point. There were so many pastries, and but I always stuck to the old standby, pastel de nata. I even bought some and took them home to my dad (along with the coconut and almond macaroons). For the most part we got by with English, but it's very clear that this is a local joint. The food, pastry and coffee are all solid. Definitely stop by if you are in the area. read more
