I went with the spaghetti with tomato sauce, prosciutto, and parmesan. It comes in a plastic container, but don't let the appearance fool you, it's very tasty! One portion is only 4 euros, and it comes with unlimited water and a cup of wine if you want. There are no chairs, so you stand and eat. The spaghetti was perfectly al dente, just how I like it! Every menu is 4 euro. Well, there is only one menu with two options. Pasta 1 or pasta 2. The difference would be the type of pasta and the sauce (I think the sauces are always the same though). It's so simple and yet because the pasta itself is so chewy and good, you fall in love with this place! They also provided free lunch on Christmas Eve! How generous! We ran over from the Spanish steps since I had read that if you don't get there early (1-2pm on weekdays), they're likely to run out of pasta and the line that form runs out the door of this small unnamed pastificio (translates to macaroni factory). There are a few stools scattered around the store with large bottles of complimentary water on the counter and bags of their pasta for sale (a bit pricey at about €6). The €4 price also includes complimentary house wine that they keep up at the pasta counter. Self serve! This is a truly authentic, quick, and local experience that is NOT to be missed! read more

What you come here for: good cheap pasta. Notice I said good cheap pasta, not the best pasta you'll have. However, for the portion and price, it can't be beat! So when lunch time rolled around, we got on line, got one of each pasta, went back to the Spanish steps and ate our lunch :) What a great meal, enjoying the scene below. If you're in the area, do it! Went around 9PM, they had 2 options which were pitched to us as "with pork and no meat" so not really sure what I had, but both were red sauce based and not very impressive. In November 2013, I stayed a couple of weeks in Rome a few blocks away from Pastificio near the Spanish Steps. It was one of the eateries that stood out. During lunch, there are only two types of pasta offered for 4 euros each. Both were excellent! I never saw meat in the pasta (kind of a bummer for me) but eating meat every meal is an American thing. All you can drink wine (either red or white) and water is offered. I did not bother to ask the type of each wine since it was a madhouse in the little establishment and the guys at the counter didn't speak English well. Any wine not sweet works for me and how can you beat FREE?! Don't expect seating. In Rome, most people eat standing up at counters along the wall (no stools). This is customary for lunch. BTW, this location is perfect for the shoppers out there with the high end stores all within a few blocks. The Metro (Spagna) was only a block or so away too. read more

Undoubtedly the best and cheapest pasta I've had in my life!! We made sure we were here by 12:45 pm (they open at 1:00 pm) to beat the crowds as this place seems to be super popular among locals and tourists. After a 15 minute wait (which seemed like forever though given the amazing smells that were coming from the kitchen), we were the second group to get in. They had only 2 varieties of pasta (one tomato based, another pesto based with mushroom and ham). Being vegetarians, both me and my husband got the tomato based pasta (which seemed to be the more popular one) and savored every bit of it. For the price of 4 euros each, this is without doubt the best pasta you will ever have. There is only one word to describe the tomato sauce - 'heaven'. I could easily eat their tomato sauce pasta 3 times a day for a month without flinching - no kidding! The space to stand (they have no chairs to sit) is very limited. Not more than 10 people can probably fit in the space. So, if you don't get there early, there is a good chance you'll have to do a take out - but trust me it's totally worth it! read more

I have been here a couple of times and would definitely revisit, it's cheap and quick and good food. Best to take home or to eat by the Spanish steps. This place didn't live up the hype. We went twice, and they only have one or 2 max. pasta dishes available at the same time. Nowhere is indicated what are actually those dishes, so you have to guess - and the waiters are clearly not motivated to help you out. Now the pasta. They definitely are cheap (€4 for a quite large portion). They probably are fresh. But the sauces are not homemade, very oily, and turn the dishes into a canteen-like style. I think this place is just ok. The location is great! Near the Spanish steps... Maybe I've been spoiled by excellent pasta all over Italy but i think this place is just so so. There's a line up out the door typically for their pasta, and for €4 you get a choice of 2 types of pasta only. One with meat, another vegetarian. I tried both and found the pasta to be a bit too over cooked and salty. There are a bunch of sit down places in Trastevere where u can get a primo or pasta for around €5. If the commute isn't an issue, I'd rather eat there.... And be able to sit down... Rather than stand around and eat pasta out of a plastic container near the spanish steps. read more

We just got into Rome and we hadn't had any lunch yet.....maybe 2:30 in the afternoon. With favorable Yelp reports, we figured we would see if the place was still open.....and we were in luck! I wouldn't trust the other reports that they are only open from 1:00 to 2:00 PM. We left at about 3:00 or later and they were still serving pasta. They were out of one of their daily pastas, but we did get to have some of their FABULOUS large pasta tubes (not sure technically the name of the type of noodle) with fresh pesto.......all nice and coated with that basil, olive oil, garlic goodness! Over-hyped. Went an hour before close and there were two options the quasi-carbonara with bacon bits and a sad looking tomato basil. Went with the latter as the former was just an abomination. Was not offered the wine until I asked. Had to eat in which was fine the place was empty so lots of room. It was fresh pasta a little undercooked rather then al dente and not really flavorful though it is sitting in sauce and basil all day. The cheese was the saving grace but space and no parmigiana in site. Costs extra. Definitely not a huge portion as others have mentioned. I would say it is more of an appetizer sized amount.
