For the last 3 summers our kids have attended private swim lessons at Pat O'Brien. I will say that the instructors can be hit or miss. We also recently attended a birthday party here. It was so nice that it was a private party and the kids had both pools and the splash area to themselves. Overall staff is always super nice, facility clean and great prices. Southgate Rec Water Aerobics class, Saturdays in August 11:30AM-12:15PM. The class runs from August 6th to August 27th, a 4-week session and is ages 12+, all fitness levels. Technically the activity location is officially called the "New Aquatic Center" at 8025 Waterman Rd, not the Pat O'Brien Community Center but I'm leaving this review here for now until the "New Aquatic Center" gets its own business page. For only $30 for 4 classes, I signed up as something fun to do and cool off to end the summer, and to complement my Orangetheory workouts and Zumba classes. The 45-minute class is meant to help improve flexibility and range of motion, and to build cardiovascular fitness and muscular strength. I brought water shoes, a towel, swimming attire, and a hat. They didn't recommend any need for pool noodles. Check in at the window and after entering the gate, grab a pair of foam water dumbbells (black, blue, or purple -- I'm not too sure the difference) and choose a spot in the water. Winnie had a speaker with music playing and a whiteboard with the moves written out to follow along/refer to. The warm-up consisted of jogging a few laps in the water around the pool to start, followed by frog leaps around the pool. Lastly, butt-kicks underwater in place. First set was jumping West/North/East/South and back to center underwater. Next was the Superman, then Flutter Kicks for more core work. Then we did Front Raises with the water dumbbells. (The water dumbbells offer resistance underwater that will help tone and strengthen the arm muscles, abs, and back.) Set #2 consisted of Lateral Raises, a Standing Row, and Chest Fly moves with the water dumbbells. Finally, the cooldown was another jogging lap around the pool, one lap walking around the pool, then stretches for hamstrings, triceps, shoulders, neck, obliques, etc. It's a neat exercise alternative, and our instructor was Winnie (although her last class will be the August 13th as she's going back to college in SoCal). The class size isn't too big, and all ages represented! For the first meeting we were in the shallow end of the larger (laned) pool as there was only one lifeguard. They also have water aerobics offered Monday and Wednesday evenings 7:30-8:15PM, which continue into September and October (not sure about the Saturday ones). UPDATE: Instructor changed to Brittany (sp?) for remainder of the August Saturday sessions. Lots of parking. I know at the Pat O'Brien Community Center they also have Zumba classes, and Citizens Church meets on Sundays too. There's a walking path and basketball court too, sometimes they have craft fairs, car shows, and you might even catch Rico's Tamales for sale. read more

I'm hesitant to write this review, because I want to keep this lap pool a secret. However, I feel as an avid swimmer, it'll be selfish of me. This is probably the best lap pool you can swim in Sacramento. I have been to multiple swimming pools in Sacramento... 24hr Fitness and California Family Fitness. Visited for an Easter event. First time here and if I recall correctly this was one just a field. Most of the community center was closed off due to the pandemic and probably because it was around 9am when we arrived. It was a cold day but we figured being one of the first families for the Easter egg hunt in the pool was a good idea. The cold weather and wind started to make me thing it was a bad idea but it ended up being quite pleasant. The pool was heated to a decent temperature and while I wasn't the one who entered the pool, the kids enjoyed it. It ended up being much harder to get them to get out of the pool once it started. Regarding the event, it was quite well run. We didn't have any issues and the staff was friendly and got things moving quickly. They followed proper COVID precautions and we generally didn't get within 6 feet of any other families. Being new, the location was extremely cleaned and well-maintained. I will likely visit this place again for any events they might have in the future. read more

I've been here twice. Once for an indoor party & once for an outdoor pool party. Both times were great experiences. The facility is great. Kid friendly. Very accommodating. We enjoyed ourselves here, specifically the pool areas. Would definitely consider having future parties here. read more

I never leave reviews! But this place deserves a very negative review!! I can't believe I left my young children in the hands of these people!! You should be very ashamed of yourselves!! My young daughters, 6&8, were left in their care for the first day ever of a new daycare facility!! I was out of the state when I got a call that my youngest daughter fell and had a cut!! I said ok I'm out on business you have to call me husband. The young guy at the front says ok what's your husbands number. I gave it to him even though he had it on file with the emergency paper my husband filed with them that morning!! She had more than a cut. She was impailed in her right side by a latch from something in a room they were playing duck duck goose.! I was told a boy who I will not name but should be punished...was tripping our babies! He literally tripped my 6 year old and she was impailed by this latch!!! She screamed bloody murder and my husband picked her up and took her to the hospital. She got 7 stitches and was examined for internal wounds. WTF????!!!! Who would put up with this? I've examined this room several times. I've requested one day credit which is very nice of me. I've requested how to protect these latches! Not one person has gotten back to me in 2 weeks! Beyond livid!!! We paid for days that we just forgave because my child is traumatized and now we have hospital bills.! So if the director is now reading this you may want to get back to me before further action is taken!!! I sought action through your teenage staff a few times and that got me no where!!! My 6 year old deserves further action for her injuries and now she will never trust a place like yours again!!! read more

Family friendly place for the kids to go swimming or running in the water. There's two pools. One for lap swimming and the other pool ranges from one to four feet deep. There's also an area for the kids to run through in the water, so much fun. Lifeguards are present and ready for action. Great place for the summer fun for 5 dollars per person. read more

Pat O'Brien's Community Center is exactly was the Sacramento community needed!!! We have been eying this place for quite some time since it's so close to my in-laws and the day finally arrived where we attended their grand opening! This is located near the end of Waterman Road where less traffic tends to head unless you live near that neighborhood. So bicycling with your kids on that side of the entrance is perfect. The other entrance, which is the main one, is on Vintage Park, where it offers plenty of parking spaces and even has a safe drop off zone roundabout. Near the front entrance they have two play structures. These play structures are not gated off like the aquatic center. Therefore, families may simply arrive with their kiddos to enjoy the playground! The aquatic center has two pools, one with two diving boards (one short & one tall), their "Fun Run" which is their inflatable water course, and a closed off area for kids and adults to swim in. **Children must demonstrate to a lifeguard that they can swim one lap without stopping in order to go on the Fun Run. Once they pass their swim test a wristband is then provided** On the other side of the center, I would identify this as the younger kids pool. I believe the deepest the main part of the pool goes is 3-3.5 feet with the end cap of this large kid pool just a little deeper. Plenty of lifeguards everywhere who were fully vigilant, giving us parents a peace of mind. A shaded area for people to sit and lay on the lounge chairs. Lastly, they have a spray park too! This is also where their showers are located to clean all that chlorine off. Life jackets are provided by the center and easily accessible to swimmers near their snack bar. I'm not sure on the pricing of their food because we got it for free since we came on their grand opening day! If you haven't heard of this place, don't waste anymore time and go check it out! I didn't realize the Pat O'Brien Community Center was even open and just a mile away from the area I live in. Until I decided to sign up my son for swim lessons and it brought me here. This swim center is probably all of a year old, and is a nice small swim center is you're in the area on a hot day. I signed my son up for his first set of one-on-one swim lessons, and his instructor was very friendly and attentive to my sons needs. While my son was having his one-on-one lessons with his personal swim instructor, I could see other people enjoying group lessons a little further out in the deeper portions of the pool. While the deepest portions had swimmers swimming laps on their own accord. Also in the most deepest portion is where the diving boards are located, for both class instructions and for the public when a class isn't in session. We came back a couple of weeks later after my sons swim lessons, and saw that later on in the afternoon the entire pool was open to the public. So it was a lot more busy both in and out of the pool. read more

We had my niece's 1st birthday party at this aquatic center. My sister had acquired about the rental for a week and has communicated with the event coordinator/ manager. We made an agreement to set a date to come in and pay for the rental. However, we received an email a day before the appointment to inform us that the rental was no longer available. We were so upset. We've planned the food pickup and sent out invites based on the appointment that was confirmed. We assumed that the appointment to make the payment was a confirmation to lock down the day and rental. Who would have known it wasn't. My sister had to call the director to see what happened and was informed that it was indeed available, there was a miscommunication. Can you believe it! If we didn't call and follow up, the party would have been cancelled! We were informed during payment and signing the contract that there's no set up time but it's up to the life guards discretion if we can come in 10-15 mins early to set up. On the day of the party, the supervisor was so rude. When she saw my brother in law's brother, she was smiling. But, when she saw my sister and I, her demeanor changed and rolled her eyes. She told us we can't go in until our set contract time, which is 5pm. She said, I don't know Who told you guys you could ask, it's not ever possible. She said the prior group made a mess and will let us in at 5 pm. We felt discriminated because of our race. We knew there was a chance that we couldn't go in early. It was 10 minutes earlier than our contract time but she should not have been so rude! If it wasn't for the nice life guards on duty, I wouldn't have given any stars. read more

I was taking my morning walk around their parking lot. I see a summer camp activity going on with the kids and staff outside on the grass. Kids are not 6 feet apart from one another and no masks on. Not sure how parents feel about sending their kids here for summer camp during a pandemic that is surging. As a parent myself, I wouldn't want to send my child to a summer camp like this. You may not know what's really happening at the center. There were 3 staff members, 2 had their masks on and 1 had hers pulled down to her chin. Again, no kids had a mask on or even carried one. I'm assuming parents are having their kids wear a mask when being dropped off. read more

It's perfect for families with little ones. The kid pool is huge enough for the little ones to roam and play.

This review is for the summer camp. Not thrilled that they have a bunch of teenagers watching younger kids and it's just chaotic. My friends and I unfortunately had to draw out kids out of the summer camp because other kids within the program did not know how to act. No adult supervision. I do not tolerate racial bullying. SUPER UNHAPPY W THEIR SWIM CLASSES! For 67$ every 2 weeks you're not getting your money's worthy. The instructors waste time by doing Simon says and wall time using swim strokes . At little whale swim school they actually swim with each child across the pool and tweak their moves and teach them different strokes. I hope this for this for this community center. read more

Absolutely the best if you want your child to come back in tears. My daughter attended swim lessons today and came back, not wanting to tell us why she was crying. We later found out that her teacher, a grown woman, told her to shut up twice, when she said nothing. She is quite shy and dislikes speaking to new people, so I believe her when she says she didn't say anything. The staff at the front desk for the new aquatic center are lovely, it was just that one teacher. I don't understand the time tables for classes, but that teacher taught my daughter for barracuda, and she could be teaching a lower tier class, making the environment almost toxic. My first impressions aren't great. If you're looking for a good place for your children to learn how to swim, I recommend Rutter Swim Center. The teachers care about each student and will remember your child from the last time and are generally the best teachers your child can have. read more

We had a BLAST at the Halloween swimming for pumpkins event ! Staff was awesome! Price was cheap! Lots of games and candy candy ! Life guards were very strict I LOVED that! They take their job very serious and I appreciate it! My children were definitely safe. Staff was awesome ! Especially the mermaid!!!! She made ALL the kids happy! She even swam with all the kids! We definitely will be returning and can't wait for it to re open ! read more
