On Tuesday, January 14 at a little bit before or about 3:30 in the afternoon we arrived at Patao safety check station in Wailuku on lower Main Street there were two red cones blocking the entrance of the station The website and signs at the businesses location say they're open till 4 pm On Tuesday. [[HIGHLIGHT]]We drove all the way from Haiku to get our safety and after a couple of minutes of non-responsiveness one of the agents waved us off first.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] I went to see the agent and asked him if he could do the safety. He told me he was closed early because he could not finish the safeties he had until 4 o'clock. There were two cars in the location. The average safety takes less than 10 minutes to do. He refused to do the safety, even though we explained to him, we drove from another part of the island. [[HIGHLIGHT]]When I told him I thought I was there a little bit before 3:30 he quickly yelled out Hourse Shit and walked away from me[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]]. My partner who made a special trip for the safety, decided she would ask him if he could make an exception that was not a pleasant decision. [[HIGHLIGHT]]The businesses agent was beyond rude, vulgar and sexually aggressive with gestures in his private parts and showing his Butt to my girlfriend after he refused[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] . This is a man of over 65 years old and this is the best he could do with a small dispute after this verbal abuse. An obscene gestures. My 60+ panter went back to the car . I felt the need to talk person a bit more. He went on to tell me that my partner was rude to him, only after his verbal assaults and sexually explicit gestures did she stand up for herself and gave him some of the speech and attitude. Wow, fastest safety check ever or what? It's like I pulled up to the shop, blinked, and *BAM* I was done. They are located on Lower Main St. by the gas station. They have 2 "lanes" and there were 3 cars ahead of me. I wasn't sure what to do, so I just waited until the guy signaled for me to pull up behind the car in the left lane. Once it's your turn, you present your registration and previous safety check. Make sure your registeration is current or you'll have some back and forth you have to do between the safety check and registration at the DMV. You stay in your car and they tell you what to do to make all the checks (turn signal left, right, honk your horn etc). Once all is good, they take a photo of your car, print out the documents accordingly, stick the updated sticker on your car and you're on your way. Even though there was a car ahead of me, I was seriously out of there in less than 15 minutes and I didn't even have to leave the comfort of my car. I've heard of them for years and my other half is normally the one that gets it done for me here. Now having experienced it myself, I can say it's an amazing and quick service and only $26. It's so easy, I wouldn't hesitate to come back here myself. Just note that they run pretty old school style and only take cash or check. So be prepared with the appropriate payment. So went here to get my safety check as I live 45 min from town or more depending on traffic. They have 2 sections you can drive into and you should have the following readily available. *Registration *Mileage *Insurance Card - if you're using your app just ensure you've downloaded the PDF version of your cards since they won't accept the info in your wallet or just the app Friendly environment and quick as long as you have the proper info provided. How can one give less than 5-stars to this literal drive-thru safety inspection service? While I've heard of these guys for years, I've always done my safety inspections at car dealerships. So what finally brought me in? My spouse's car, a vehicle skid control light on and Maui Toyota's refusal to perform the inspection because of that. Hello, it's a feature that can be turned off and on so why should it matter? LOCATION: The infamous Patao's is on the Waiehu side of Lower Main Street right across from the Asian Market & Fast Food store. The Patao's recently purchased the Hashi Car Wash down the road which has yet to reopen but the safety inspections are still done at their current location. EXPERIENCE: It's a one-way in and out so enter from the oceanside of the property and choose one of the two lanes. Stay in your car and have your car registration and insurance card ready. A friendly man came up to the window and said "Gimmie what I need!" in a jokester manner. After checking that the documents were in order, he asked how many miles were on the odometer. He then had me turn on the headlights, high beams, turn signals, hazard signals, reverse lights, horn and windshield wipers. One of the turn signal bulbs were burnt out but he said "Eh, minor. Just change da bulb." Thanks, eh! He then had me drive up onto an elevated platform where I waited for them to process the paperwork and apply the new safety inspection sticker to the bumper. In about 15 minutes and $26 later I was done. He thanked me for coming in, said to stay safe and will see me next year. Awesome service. The only downfall for me is that they apply the new sticker on top of the old one. My OCD personality has an issue with that but it wasn't my car so I don't care, LOL! Shhh, don't tell the spouse that. TIPS: No appointments are taken. They're open daily. Cash or checks only. OVERALL: The best and most convenient place to get that annoying and outdated safety inspection done. Highly recommended! read more

I have tried calling several times. When I finally reach an employee they told me that the mobile app would be sufficient to get our truck safety check. After driving to town and waiting the app was apparently not sufficient. What a waste of time and gas. Had we been informed correctly this could be all avoided. Now I have to wait for a paper copy to be mailed to me since printing out my policy with all necessary information is also not sufficient. Pretty much the only place that I come and do safety checks. Patao's makes me feel at ease and even if it is hectic I have never felt like they've rushed me or the check for my vehicle. I have never had any issues with customer service from the people who work here. There is an older gentleman who tells some jokes to make the process a little more pleasant. I also noticed that there are some plastic chairs under the awning where people get out of their cars and sit as they wait their turn. However, do expect that there will be a wait and to sit in your car for a bit. Patao's gets busy and has a line fairly quickly. But this is a local "mom and pop" type of business so that goes along with it. Just a tip: Try not to come when the huli huli chicken business is going on in the parking lot nearby because the smoke can be off putting. But that's nothing that Patao's has control over since it's a separate business. Oh and bring cash to take care of your transaction, no cards or check. read more

Their service reminds me of the classic gas and go. The exception is that they are "Tag and Go". Consistent in their service, I can only recall going to one other place for tags and that was only because I wasn't in Wailuku. Things to remember about coming here: Come with your paperwork ready - registration, insurance, ID. Make sure both of your license plates are affixed to your vehicle. They have to take a picture for the state, so don't waste anybody's time with the plate in your glove unless you plan on bolting it on While you're in line. Follow the queue - the signs are clearly marked. Don't try to snake people by cutting in line from the street. Be prepared to smell the huli huli chicken. If you're lucky, you'll get one for now and later. This is a real Locals Spot. As in, the neighborhood is in the heart of history when it comes to Maui neighborhoods. Aloha begets Aloha. If you're intimidated by not too much small talk, then you're better suited at Shell or something. Good luck getting an appointment. Did I mention these guys are tag and go, unlike other safety spots that require an appointment and are sometimes booked weeks in advance. After you get your ok (ya know, check those brake lights, horn, etc.) you're off to the DMV for one more transaction (Thats a quick trip down to Kahului and back). Customer service service sucks. There were three older cantankerous types moving at a slow pace. The guy who I was lucky enough to get was uber grouchy. Very short and barked orders at me.
