Bookstores are my favorite stores - and Patchouli Joe's in Denton is another fabulous bookstore! Anytime you have a bookstore in an old historic building you already get my attention. And you create a space that honors the building and updating it with warm wood and fixtures, you're doing it right in my opinion. I loved the selections offered here and so did my daughters and granddaughter. Yes, I bought books here and my granddaughter was thrilled. There's a dedicated children's area with nice seating for them. There was a touch of magic there. Kids were happy and couldn't wait to get to the next book. That is what a book store is supposed to be about. I met the owners and both are genuinely nice and they care about their customers and their business. Both are very knowledgeable and more than happy to help in any way. If you're in Denton, you need to drop in and browse around - I bet you walk out with a great book! read more

Patchouli Joe's Books was an okay bookstore for me. After reading some of their amazing reviews, and exploring some of the other bookstores around Denton I had high expectations for this store. However, I don't know if we caught them on a bad day, if their inventory was really low after Indie Bookstore Day the weekend before, or if the stars just weren't aligned that day but the store itself was very empty. The book selection was minimal and the staff was not exactly helpful. Frankly the store felt too big for the minimal amount of books they had. Also customer service was absent that day and after asking some questions to the person at the counter you could tell he just didn't want to be there. The difference in customer interaction between this store and others around Denton was like night and day. Would I come back to Patchouli? Maybe, but it wouldn't be my first stop when visiting Denton. read more

Ever find a bookstore you feel like you could just move in and live there and live happily ever after? Or has a has a coziness to it that makes you feel right at home? Such is Patchouli Joe's Books & Indulgences. This is one of the most charming bookstores you will encounter. They have books for everyone, but I was taken back with the adorable children's sections I have seen in a bookstore. This Indie Bookstore really has a nice vibe to it. Part of that comes from the helpful people who work here, part of it from the other customers in the store. Altogether, everyone seemed to be relaxed and enjoying each other's company and the coffee/tea that they provide for their guests here. This is a fantastic bookstore; it's very welcoming and has a wide variety of books. The two girls who work there are amazing--they always recommend great titles and are wonderful to talk to. I am a sucker for a bookstore; I will ALWAYS stop if I see one. If I'm running late to something, I'll see a bookstore and BOOM: running later. Out family took a little road trip to Denton for no reason other than to just get out of Dallas for a bit and had the very good luck finding a parking spot right outside of Patchouli Joe's. Did the Patchouli in the name scare me? Yes. Did it bring up visions in my Gen X brain of unshowered white dudes with locs playing hackie sack while debating whether to follow the Dead or Phish that summer, and would their parents fund it? Yes. Yes it did. But IT WAS NOT LIKE THAT AT ALL! The vibe was "upscale hippie", the scent was not at all overwhelming. It changed my mind about patchouli tbh. But I digress. This place is fabulous. Lots of great displays, great recommendations, great representation of non-white and queer authors on display mixed in - not in a "look we're checking boxes during a celebration month", more like "we all live together, therefore we'll all be shelved together". Lots of local authors, and lots of romance/fantasy. The best part of the whole place was chatting with the two women who were working there: Mariana and (I didn't get her name wtf?!?). They were so helpful when I told them I was in a reading rut; they asked about what I've read and loved and we went around and found some interesting options, ultimately landing on a local author (Kayla Olson). Walked out two books heavier and thrilled to have found a new book spot to visit! read more

It takes some serious confidence to open an independent bookstore just down the street from a multi-story used bookstore just down the street. However, after stepping inside Patchouli Joe's it will be quickly apparent that confidence is justified. Featuring a small but quality selection of books, along with a variety of other products, this bookstore is a delightful place to visit. It also smells nice, perhaps due to the patchouli! Prices are pretty standard for an independent bookstore, though they do offer a discount for teachers and others! Check it out! read more

The service here is amazing! Everyone is always so friendly and can help you in any way you need. I love coming here on my days off for a sticker, book, or soap, plus I can drink some free coffee while I browse. The children's section is amazing and they have a wide selection of products to choose from. They also have an amazing rewards program where after 6 purchases if you're signed up you get 10% back!!! The only independent bookstore in Denton who takes care of the customers like family. read more

I've absolutely love this bookstore! It has all of the right elements of a cozy bookstore! I happened upon this place while taking a stroll after leaving a nearby restaurant. I am glad I walked in. Both times I've been in I have been warmly greeted by the staff! On the second trip one of the members brewed a fresh pot of coffee for us to enjoy. Did I mention they have free coffee?? Of course a donation doesn't hurt, bc the coffee is delicious and is locally roasted and the staff grinds it right at the bookstore. There is a good stock of books and a very well appointed area for kids! We love supporting local businesses and this place has a special charm that is missing from a lot of corporation owned stores. We all enjoyed our visit and will return in the future. read more

I love Patchouli's! My wife and I were visiting Denton for an evening and happened to walk by Patchouli's. I have a conditional where I must enter all bookstores I pass, so naturally we entered. What a welcoming and peaceful environment! Not only do they have a wide selection of books across a wide selection of genres, but the whole place is clean, organized, tidy, and thoughtfully laid out. We spent around 30 minutes roaming the shelves and point out different titles. We also love the kids area, which it's beautiful books and miniature reading chairs. Super cute independent bookstore nestled downtown! I popped in to look at books while I was pregnant and found a pregnancy milestone journal to document the memories of carrying my little one, as well as, some children's books. They have a great selection of books on hand but if there is a particular book you have your eye on that isn't in the store they will order it for you! read more

This is one of my favorite places in Denton. I've been looking for an alternative to b&n for a long time to try and support local business instead and i finally found the perfect place. I love that you can search the website and even order a book if they don't have it. I found this store while exploring the square with my mother and two sons (7 and 10 years old). When we entered we were really excited about the natural soaps and incense that were close to the entrance. We spent about 10 minutes exploring this area of the store which was directly right of the checkout area where two of the store's employees were hanging out. I realized after some time there and more time walking around the store that we were never greeted by the employees nor were we asked if we needed any assistance. It was as if we weren't there. This was rather odd since aside from 1 other person, we were the only customers in the store. We continued to walk around and look at books and my sons even stopped to play a game of chess on the chess board they had set up in the store. The employees still made no contact with us whatsoever. Some time thereafter a woman (who happened to be white) walked in and was greeted by the employees. At that point I chose to leave. We weren't even told "thank you" as we left as is a common practice for other stores that I have shopped in. As a Black woman, the lack of attention was jarring and I was especially disappointed because I had planned to make a purchase but chose not to after the lack of customer service. read more
