If it helps any, both restos are named after popular districts in Peru. The owner also operates two other Peruvian eateries in Montreal so this one is their latest endeavor. I ordered 2 ceviches--one to eat and one to go. The only difference between the ceviche Miraflores versus the Mixed is the presence of 1 green mussel, some tiny octopus legs, and a few chewy calamari pieces. The place was really quiet at lunch on Sunday and happily, parking in the city is free before 1pm so we found a spot literally across the street. Inside, there's booth and regular seating. In the summer, the front of the restaurant opens completely to the street but it's about 3 feet above the sidewalk. On the tv behind the bar, they have Peruvian music videos playing and a tall stack of alfajores under a glass dome on the counter. I think the newness shows. They didn't have any chicha morada (gasp!!) even since the very opening. So I opted instead for the fresh passion fruit juice which was really good! They surprisingly also didn't have yucca fries on the menu which seemed like an obvious item to have. But the kitchen was nice and assembled on the fly a first attempt at yucca fries and charged us for the price of regular potato fries. For their first month of operation, I'd give them a 6.5-7/10 since they're still ironing out some issues like presentation. They're not as hip as Barranco and the vision for the menu is not quite yet clear. The staff was nice and accommodating even though they didn't have some items on the menu. Taste wise, the food needs just a bit more refining to really nail a solid concept/identity. The ceviche was fresh but a touch too tangy and the impromptu yucca fries were more on the mealy side. The pesto tomato appetizers were a nice little treat. They've still got a little ways to go if they want to be neck and neck with the neighbor (Barranco) but I'll watch where they go from here in the next couple of months!

There used to be more places like this on the plateau but not anymore. Thankfully Chez Doval is still hanging in there and doing it old school. Like a lot of the places on the plateau people go here to have a good meal, and a good time, and you will often see groups having a great time here. All that cheap Portuguese red wine really loosens the clients up. The service over the years has been a mixed bag of super-friendly, charmingly grouchy, laissez-faire, or professionally efficient. It depend on the night, depends on the era. The joke back in the day was you'd call and make a reservation and when you showed up it would be crazy busy - just pandemonium - and you'd tell them you made a reservation and they'd act like you had one, but essential you were just waiting in line like everyone else. Somehow it always worked out and it was just part of the charm. So if you do try it out, just go with the flow, get a little sloppy and enjoy the vibe. On our recent visits the place seems less frenetic, which suits us just fine. The one thing you can count on is a great rib steak - and when we go back (which is less often because we used to live in the neighborhood and now we live in a different city) we go for the steak. It is always delicious, and it comes with a side salad. I always enjoy snacking on a Portuguese bun and little olives with a glass of red wine before the steak arrives. Good times!

Both were refreshing and easy to sip. All four of us opted for the three-course dinner, which included an appetizer, main course, and dessert. For appetizers, two of us had the cod croquettes and grilled chorizo. I chose the grilled sardines and also added an order of grilled calamari. Everything was delicious, well-prepared, and full of flavor. For our main courses, two of us ordered the fish and seafood rice, one chose the grilled octopus, and my husband selected the catch of the day, which was tuna. Every dish was expertly seasoned, flavorful, and very satisfying. For dessert, two of us enjoyed the flan while the other two chose the chocolate mousse. Both desserts were excellent and provided the perfect ending to a memorable meal. Our cousins also ordered espresso, which they thoroughly enjoyed. The hospitality was exceptional. Our server, Jaden was warm, courteous, attentive, and genuinely easy to talk to. The owner and chef, Luis, also stopped by our table to check on us. He was gracious, down-to-earth, and incredibly welcoming. His kindness made us feel less like customers and more like guests in his own home. The décor and atmosphere created a comfortable and inviting setting for a relaxing dinner with family. From the delicious food to the outstanding hospitality, every aspect of our experience was enjoyable. We highly recommend this restaurant and will definitely return the next time we visit Montreal.

Our server Alex was super chill and attentive, and one of the owners, Melanie, came by and was incredibly kind. We even got the chance to speak with the chef, which made the whole experience feel really personal. Food-wise, everything was fresh and full of flavor. The spicy shrimp were a standout so delicious, I'd go back just for those. I had the turbot (yes, it's a real fish ) and it was cooked perfectly. The potatoes on the side were also amazing. We also had a seafood medley with rice (loaded with clams, mussels, shrimp, salmon, cod basically everything) and it was super saucy and satisfying. Drinks were on point too loved my old fashioned. To finish, we had a porto-braised pear with ice cream and it was honestly the perfect dessert. Beautiful location, especially if you can grab a window seat. Definitely a spot we'll be going back to.
