I recently went for a crack of dawn 5:30am breakfast at Patty Cakes in Glastonbury. My coworker had raved about their bagel sandwiches. She was right! Great...the bacon is round and shaped to cover the bagel perfectly with the eggs and cheese. Yum! The coffee very delicious. The cakes look incredible and I will be back to try the pastries. This review is primarily based upon my everything bagel with veggie cream cheese order this week, but I'll provide some insight about other aspects of Patty Cakes. Patty Cakes does a number of different things. They make cakes to order. They have individual servings of desserts and pastries. They have store made bagels, bagel sandwiches, muffins and other things that you might want for breakfast. They sell pizza and pizza dough. They also sell coffee beverages and roasted coffee in bags. I ordered a bagel this week. It was a step up from some of the franchises that sell bagels, but a step or two down from the best general area bagel places. The bagel had less everything seasoning than most great everything bagels. The color of the outside of the bagel wasn't as attractive either. The outside of the bagel texture could be better. The veggie cream cheese had good flavor and was slightly above average. Basically, Patty Cakes is a decent bagel option if you're in the area and don't want to drive to one of the best bagel places about 15-20 minutes away. The service is generally pretty friendly at Patty Cakes. Our family has ordered birthday cakes (rainbow, German chocolate cake) from there and they've ranged from decent to very good. I've also had individual dessert servings from there and they're also decent to very good. I'd say they're better at desserts than they are at bagels. I made my first trip to Patty Cakes about 8 years ago when I was still living in Connecticut and I remember loving whatever treat I had. Saturday morning I was making way to Glastonbury and needed a quick breakfast so I once again stopped into Patty Cakes to fix my hunger. This semi small bakery offers a plethora of different beverages, donuts, cookies, sandwiches, and other treats to fill you up but on this day, I ordered 2 donuts and a chocolate chip cookie (I swear the cookie was for later). I picked out a glaze donut and a chocolate donut and I was not let down. Both donuts were pretty darn okay and although I wasn't in love with the things, I would still eat them again. The cookie that I consumed a little later in the day was pretty average again did the job I was hoping it would do. Overall, I had an okay experience at Patty Cakes. I did order an everything bagel for my girlfriend also and when they forgot to give it to me totally looked at me like I was the devil when I asked for it, but hey, what are you gonna do? Either way, if you want some treats and snacks this isn't a terrible place to go, give them a shot. read more

We've been coming to Patty Cakes for years as they're right in town and do some things really well - especially cakes! We love to order party cakes from here with our favorites being Red Velvet it recently, a cookies & cream cake! They are priced really well and look beautiful enough that guests will think you dropped a pretty penny. They do bagels & cream cheese really well but their breakfast sandwiches are lacking compared to others nearby. They definitely could use more meat & cheese. The bagels are the best you'll find in close vicinity though and perfect if you're looking to bring a bag to the office! The service is hit or miss but they're a local Italian joint and if you're Italian, you get it. I've also been told very good things about their pizza and stuffed breads but haven't had the pleasure to try those yet. Picked up a broccoli and potato sciachiatta on Saturday, absolutely the worst I have ever had anywhere. It was full of broccoli stalks, no heads, which you could not even chew, very little potato. The broccoli is usually ground up with no stalks, all heads. Anyway I threw it out, waste of money. This is a first from this establishment, I always get a good product them. I'm excited to return to this Family owned and operated bakery in the days ahead. Right on the Shunpike Highway (Rte 3) in Rocky Hill is their playful business sign "Patty Cakes". Trust me they are serious about their goods and craft. A co-worker had been there a number of times of breakfast and lunch. I finally decided I had to investigate for myself. FRYday lunchtime and bing Patty Cakes it was. Park in front of their shop, if the parking spots are taken there's plenty of parking in back with a rear entrance. From the front door you walk past a glassed window of the kitchen and bakery. Busy people and all seemed like family, each efficiently tending to their task. You round the corner to the order counter and cash register. The counter and display cases are full of the days fresh baked goods, i.e. donuts, bagels, breads, cupcakes, danish, pies, cakes, dessert treats, cookies....well you get the picture. Another foodie paradise. Looking up, an order board, Breakfast, Lunch, and Special order items. All decently priced and Breakfast/Lunch made to order. I had heard from my Philly born and bread co-worker that their Steak & Cheese sandwich was the closest to home he has found. Trust this guy knows his food. Well I ordered one, in about 5 minutes it was ready, neatly wrapped and with a drink about $11 plus a buck for the Bucket. My intention was to keep this wrapped until I got back to the office, but first my car needed and wash. Yup, you may have guessed right, it was devoured as I road through the carwash. I'm so disappointed in this place because the service is so bad but the sandwiches and bakery items are delicious. First of all, every single time I go I know better than to just walk in for my egg sandwich, I always call ahead because they're very busy in the mornings. I go in to get my sandwich, while there's 9 people in line, and I tell the woman behind the counter my name for my pickup and she tells me to get to the back of the line. Why would I have to wait when there's 1) a break in the line, 2) my food is sitting behind the counter getting cold while all the other people in line have no idea what they want. This business is trash. They mess up constantly. We order pizza and are told to get it at 12:30. We come at 12:30 and they say sorry we need at least another 30 mins. Custom ordered a cake for my fathers birthday. Picked it up and it looked great! A few hours later, cut into it and it was wrong :( I ordered a yellow/white cake because the frosting was mocha with a chocolate ganache (really wanted a contrast) instead it was chocolate. So much chocolate. No one could finish a slice and now we're left with a lot of cake no one really enjoyed. I do have to say the cake was moist and if it was presented in a different way it would have been delicious. Insult to injury though, the mocha frosting could have used more coffee and we all could have used a little less of it in general. All that being said, we ordered a birthday cake from them a few weeks ago and it was awesome, fresh strawberries, great white cake, good frosting ratio. Not sure if it was a different cake decorator (whose piping writing is not very good) Adding 2 hours later: I called to discuss the issue at 8am and I am still waiting for someone to call me back, now 10am. If you're going to charge $2.00 for a single cookie, at least make them fresh daily. I got one today & I was very disappointed. Gving 2 stars instead of one because I learned something today. Cookies get stale from the outside in and the center wasn't too stale to eat. Most bakeries reduce prices to avoid selling old goods - like 1/2 off. This place is a joke. When I asked them for prices on their sheet cakes, they refused to answer, and when I spotted the price list posted next to the register, I was given an unwarranted attitude over wanting to take a photo, which I was told that I couldn't do. So apparently I was supposed to come in knowing the exact sheet cake I wanted and have the exact amount of money ready, somehow divining knowledge of their offerings and prices. Eventually, the snot behind the counter relented and permitted me to take a photo, but was not at all pleasant about it. Way to treat a prospective customer. (FYI: I understand why the prices aren't out there for all to see...you can pay half for the exact same cake from a grocery store). About their pastries: Their cookies must have concrete in the batter, especially the abomination they call a red velvet cookie. It is the worst red velvet anything I have ever had. I will give them credit for the cinnamon rolls; they are great if you have one soon after they open (i.e., when they're just out of the oven). But if you like icing on your cinnamon rolls, you are in for some disappointment, as they are icing-less. The donuts are okay, and the bagels are okay, but you can probably find better donuts and bagels elsewhere and you can definitely find friendlier customer service. Finally, the layout of the place is really awkward and easily feels cramped with as few as three or four people in line with you. In conclusion, going here isn't a pleasant experience. Always wanted to stop in, after watching the morning news on WFSB channel 3, and seeing some of her handy work, and how they were raving about the place. Located in an easy to find small shopping area, and with an eye catching sign, it's hard to miss. Going thru the front door, you have to turn left and down a small hallway. Turn the corner and then you're greeted by a case, full of temptations! We came in a little after lunch time, with my wife wanting to try a half dozen of bagels, but they were almost sold out, and nothing that was left was for her tastes. BUT, fear not! The pastries in the case are enough visually to give anyone sugar shock. In a nut shell, if nothing there tempts you, then I don't know what to tell you. Prices are a little high, but these are quality pastries, and after a few bites, then you know that they're worth it. I'm glad they are not in my home town, because there would be no way to avoid stopping in. My wife has loved the bagels here for years. And for years of bad service, long lines and a generally disorganized mess we have said "never again" to only find ourselves back a month later. As I am sure we are not the only ones with such feedback, why have years gone by with no effort from management to improve? No matter. Today was the final straw. My wife called to order ahead one single bagel. We do this to avoid the line out the door with no organization part. I sat at the register for 5+ minutes, 4 customers, 3 employees and Patty herself while noone even acknowledged I was standing there. Eventually I got the attention of someone, who asked me if I could go to the back of the line. I answered- no. What is even the point of calling ahead? If that is the policy, why even take call ahead orders? The girl sighed and rolled her eyes at me as if I was the bad guy. My first thought was frustration with all the employees who ignored me. But I thought better that it isn't their fault, it is management who set them up to fail. Then I got mad at management for never seeking improve such a glaring and common fault.
