Lovely campground and beautiful lake. Campsites provided full hookups. The pier had a lot of goose poo so if out walking piers be prepared to walk with caution because the geese are everywhere. The Bathhouses were clean but one shower ran water day and night because the faucet was stripped. The park was buzzing with business and was packed. Hopefully the State will let them regain their funding because they desperately need it. We will for sure camp here again! Side note: if looking to rent a pavillion there is a large one located inside each campground but is not rentable but first come first serve. Our large RV group was able to claim it and have a potluck there. Also every Sunday at 9:00 am there is a Sunday service available inside it as well. read more

We looove it here. We have visited twice, and we had a pleasant experience both times. The staff are friendly and efficient. The park is beautiful. The sites are level. The hookups work well. The grills, picnic tables, and fire rings are nice additions. There are some geocaches here too. 5 stars - highly recommend :) read more

Visited here for one night in a regular camping spot. Overall, it's a decent spot and I would easily visit again and also recommend. Additionally it's 5 miles from camp Shelby for those on or visiting the base! Strengths: Offers both primitive and regular camping Bath houses have coin laundry!! They also have cabins!! The have a main lodge area with an old school arcade and chairs to sit and watch the lake You can swim in parts of the lake People camping generally seemed nice Primitive spots are not defined so it feels more primitive than other places I've been to Regular camp spots are supplied with a picnic table and grill Bathhouses were moderately clean and had mirrors Lots of lake view spots Areas of Improvement: The front desk... If my dealings with the lady making reservations and dealing with this park was the sole basis for a review I would give this negative three stars. She generally was unprofessional, uninformed of camp features and inefficiently in executing tasks. Should you come across the same situation try to bear with it... We reserved site #2 in the campground, the sites are well maintained, have water, sewer and electrical hook ups. Our was very level too. We were not a self contained rv so we had to use the bathhouses which were not well maintained the whole time we were there. Other campers did not treat these facilities well either and the park didn't clean or maintain the bathhouses the whole weekend we stayed at the park. While the park is great for boating and the closeness to Hattiesburg has lots to offer for families the part is older and not as maintained as it could be. We would come back and camp. read more

Wow! The 225 acre lake was absolutely stunning. We had campsite number 71 and has the perfect view. Tons of watercraft in the water. They had 5 ducks roaming around always looking for food- you can feed them out of your hand! Nearest town is only a few miles away. We will be back! read more

One of the nicest, we'll maintained state parks I have ever stayed at. Clean, quiet and a view of the lake at almost every site. Just gorgeous!! I will definitely stay here again. Only negative was a couple of spots are not level but the park ranger helped us find one that was. Very helpful indeed. Spots have plenty of room for a 43 ft RV. It was also nice to have the park ranger keep an eye on things by driving around to make sure everyone was good. read more

Great state park! We prefer the straight away or the new section but all are nice. Well suited for RVing but has a shortage of shower facilities. Most if not all sites offer power, water and sewer connection. Sites and interior roads are paved in average condition . Leveling can be an issue on many sites as the concept of a level site escapes the designers. No fire rings but picnic table supplied. Large lots with room to roam. There is some wildlife mainly of the bird variety. Eagle, Hawk, Bluebird, Muscovy Duck and a variety of song birds. We stayed about 10 days in a Class A motorhome and had a great time. read more

Man, this is the place to go in the Burg. There is a huge, huge lake where you can kayak or jet-ski, or even use a small boat. The entrance fee is only $5 or so. I haven't stayed the night here and camped out, but I have gone on day-trips. We parked under a tree, kayaked, BBQ'd, and enjoyed the sun! Dogs are permitted. There is also a small beach with volleyball. I love it at Paul B. Johnson's! read more

Awesome park for RVs. Sites are full hookup and decent size. Our standard site was under $30/night and we could walk maybe 50 yards or less to the lake. Pretty empty during the week but seems to pack up over the weekend. read more

Went to Paul B Johnson State Park last weekend for a group retreat before the end of the school year and had a great time. The park is definitely geared to the fishing/boating/RV set, but we had a great time hanging out, laying around at the fake lake beach, and grilling to our hearts' content. We stayed in Cabins #4 and 5. They cost us $60/night each and were WAY nicer than we expected. Each has two queen beds and a pull out couch in two separate bedrooms. Stocked with clean linens, toiletries, and towels it seemed more like a hotel room and less like a cabin! I was very impressed. No bug problems inside to speak of either, which is always a concern for the squeamish folk in the group. The kitchen came with pots and pans and two cans of Hormel Chili in the cabinet, which we left for the next group to enjoy. The official website lists canoeing as an activity than the park offers, but canoes are not available here. Its BYOC. There is a canoe rental place about 15 minutes away though called Black Creek Canoe Rental. Check out my review of them too. This park would be a great choice if you have a boat or want to relax outside while watching people boat. read more

Maybe it has a lot to do with all the memories of this place, or maybe it's because this state park truly is an absolute piece of heaven on earth, but this park is definitely worth 5 stars and it is definitely worth the 80 mile drive north from Slidell. My memories of this park start in 1988 when my father would bring my sister and I the week of Thanksgiving while my Mother worked. She would join us for a day or two then leave. Back then, we stayed in the same cabin every year, 14B. Back then it was fun enough to slide our butts down the slopes from that particular block of cabins down to the water to play in the stream and woods. Back then, they didn't have microwaves in any of the cabins, so we had to heat our food on the stove or... outside on the fire. ;) Ah! The good old days. But that was... 27 years ago and things were different then. But... My father STILL gets a cabin every year, tho he prefers cabin 3 now because it's right on the lake, and my sister (along with her husband) and I STILL go out there with him. It really is that awesome of a place. There is a big rec house where you check in and it has a game room that used to be fun for us kids. Not so much anymore; cuz we're not kids. There is a large lake where you can swim, boat, fish, etc., The entire park is basically structures around Geiger lake, which is a large man-made lake, I believe. There is a "nature trail" close to the entrance of the park that has a couple of lookout towers and is about 2 miles long and definitely a pleasant trek. When entering the park and on the way to the check in area, you have to drive over a levee that holds the lake on one side and drops off to a gorge about 30 feet below, which is an interesting sight to flat-landers. From there, you go over a bridge that is situated BELOW the water level of the lake, so water is often rushing over the road. It's all very beautiful. The park offers a nice primitive camping area, though not as nice and secluded as it was before Katrina. After the storm, this park saw LOTS of evacuees and had to expand to accommodate them. Into the primitive camping area was the only place to do so. They do have another area set up though, a little further from the previous area. I have not camped there since be Katrina, but if it's anything like it used to be, it still pretty. They also seem to "feed" the area cut up timber from felled trees throughout the park, so finding firewood isn't a big problem. The cabins have modernized from three decades ago, that's for sure, yet they still retain a rustic feel to them. It's all brick on the outside and wood on the inside. The three cabins by the lake are fine and the lake is just a few feet from your back door. Cabins now include a microwave, fridge, ac, and cable tv! Lol. Though...... what are you gonna need cable tv for?! You should be outside, sitting by a fire, exploring or walking around! They rent canoes and kayaks, though, we only did that one year. I can't recall how much it was. I DO recall that across the lake, where there are no cabins, my father and I came across a few old ruined docks and walkways, probably washed away from a storm long ago or something. I don't know. I was a kid and my imagination ran wild when I saw that. They do have a separate camping area for larger groups. I've never been a apart of any of that, but I can often hear them from across the lake at night. Over all, this is a really fine state park and camp ground. There are plenty of places to stop and chill and enjoy the forest and the lake. I've not seen too much bigger wildlife out there, however there are lots of ducks and geese around the lake. Definitely worth a little drive to go check it out! read more

We brought our own blankets, a cookie sheet, a frying pan and a pot in case we needed it to cook breakfast. We grilled outside for dinner. We like camping here because you can see the lake from most of the campsites. We prefer the "new campground" because the sites are more spacious. The picnic tables could be improved as they are wooden and ours was splintered and cracked. Overall a mostly positive rating. We've camped here several times because it's close enough to home for a quick weekend trip. read more

My husband and I took our two year old camping in June 2011 at Paul B. Johnson State Park. Which was stupid on our part considering it was severely hot outside. We had a great time, we fished, swam at the lake, and hung out around the camp site which was a superb location right by the lake. We had a great time. There is so much for the family to do at Paul B. Johnson, we will consider going back when the weather is right. read more

I always go here to go tubing, kneeboarding, and wake boarding. Its always fun although sometimes the lake can get kind of crowded and pretty choppy. They also don't to good of fishing. But a Great Lake to do any type of watersports!! read more

The website is updated quite well and provides many local attractions besides what the park offers. Many amenities can be found here from fishing, camping, hiking, biking, swimming, and boating. If you are not one for the wild, stop into one of the cabins or go to local Hattiesburg where you can get a bed and breakfast or a hotel near one of America's Great Places as named by the American Planning Association. The park would be a great day get away staying near the Hattiesburg area. read more

We've been here a few times now. The park itself is beautiful, large lake, lots of land, very relaxing. The cabins however are horrendous. The cabins clearly have not been renovated since the '60's. They all have plastic 2" thick mattresses, they are extremely dirty, doors that won't close, mold, minimal utensils and 2 pots per unit. Overall we love the scenery but this place is in desperate need of a good cabin cleaning and renovation. read more

Nice well maintained state park. Bathhouse facilities have seen better days. Some recently rebuilt and other are just atrocious. Paved roads and concrete pads. We have stayed here many times, but the newest staff just is not as friendly as the old. Getting anything done in the office is very difficult. But when we needed help on our site they were Johnny on the spot. The lake is stocked each year and fishing off the piers is good. We will return to this park for sure. We camped here in a Motorhome. read more

Thanksgiving wekend, when they know it will be packed, and they drain the lake for winter???????????????????????what....at least wait till after the holidays. There is plenty of time for the lake to fill by spring. This park has gone so down hill since they put sewer in. They charge more for their campsites, no garbage cans on the site ( they have dumpsters you have to take it to). We never saw a Ranger, the whole time we were there. There are some nice campsites there, but., the one we had was terrible. a 2 foot drop off from the pad to the ground...Really???? and this was what they called a "premium site" which cost us $24.00 a night.....Also we took a boat with us to fish...Ha Ha Ha Ha.....the lake was down at least 4 foot, but we launched it anyway, after reading the sign posted that said "Absolutly No Wake"....Okay we still could fish right????????The only think we caught was a PICERILLE (Garfish) Really, in a Lake that is suppose to be stocked??????No wonder we didn't cautch anything the Garfish are eating everything........What a major let down and waste of time and MONEY.I think we'll go to Flint creek next year. read more
