Ah, so this is what they mean by a cool, crisp morning. Temp around 30F and very dry - the sun was bright and the sky was beautiful. There were a few other people on the trail today, though no bikes. We even saw a tri-color Corgi-mix with beautiful blue eyes! The trail is very well marked, although I typically get lost around the washout, but that's me being stubborn. Sorry for the dead end footprints, y'all! Found my way quickly along the trail past the Day Use area this weekend - I didn't ask for directions, of course - and had a great workout. He's short and I'm old, so we make a great hiking team. Just sharing here - I picked up a set of bone conduction headphones and listened the book of Psalms while hiking through creation - it was a deeply spiritual day and I'm very grateful for the opportunity to share that moment here. Definitely check out the hiking trail, it's about 5 miles with only a couple mild - moderate climbs and makes for a nice Saturday adventure. They've done some improvements and now the Gorge trail is great! I love this park because it's well maintained with lots of trees for shade. Just a little hilly during some parts of the trail to get a bit of a workout. When the weather is nice it's really pleasant. It's a great place to go with the dogs. I'd like to go horeseback riding there one day too! read more

I decided to camp at Bogue Chitto State Park for an event. I was volunteering for on sandstone Road. Kayla Gabbard ministries meet me in the water. I came there from 30 October through November 2. Who knew that they would have such a turnout of Halloween trick-or-treaters. What a great idea! The folks that were across from me, let me know so I had to run to the store and grab a bunch of candy. I was extremely tired from volunteering all day. I left my bowl of candy on my doorstep of my rig. I must say the kids that were trick-or-treating that night were awesome! Gone are the days where they dumped the whole bowl in their sack and runoff. I could hear the parent saying take one or two and that's it. What a wonderful experience. The campground is amazing! Is horseback riding, interpretative area, hiking trails, bike trails, mountain and road. Vicki at the main office was such a source of information. And one of the kindest people I've met on my many adventures. read more

We decided to make the drive up to Bogue Chitto State Park this past Sunday 10/14 for a family day. What drew us was the hiking trails we saw online. It tooks us about 1.5 hours from Baton Rouge and it was an easy drive. It costs $3 per person to enter and I think 3?and under were free. They have a lot to do here from tent camping sites, and RV sites, horse riding trails(they have a seperate parking lot for horse trailers), several different trails that are clean and well marked with colored diamonds, a park with a water feature and a water slide, and tubing/canoe rentals. We took advantage of the hiking trails, specifically the Gorge trail which is 6 miles and can be accessed from the park. There were alot of mosquitos so be aware and spray yourself down thoroughly with bug spray. I mistakenly thought this was a flat trail ha! Turns out LA does have hills and they're in Bogue Chitto!! I was able to push my jogging stroller through most of the hike, there are a couple of patches of sand that make it very difficult and there was one stream crossing that didnt have a bridge. I wouldn't bring a regular stroller period or even a jogging stroller if you are coming by yourself, you will definitely need help carrying the stroller across the stream. At the end of the hike we set the kids loose on the playground and water slide perfect end to a hike. read more

We checked this park out for the first time. It was a pretty big park with lots of things to do. We would like to rent a cabin one day but we have know idea what they look like inside. They look pretty nice on the outside. The Park rangers and staff said look it up on YouTube which we did they were 12 years old and not very good pictures. If this Park would pay a couple hundred dollars to hire a professional photographer to take pictures of the cabins inside and out and the river, beach, pond and everything else it would attract so many more tourists to visit the park. Definitely need pictures of the cabins inside so we can see what the $200 a night is all about. Fun park to explore, just terrible marketing!! read more

Try to do this hike before it gets hot! I enjoyed this hike but it started to get hot midday so be prepared for that and a lot of bug spray! I didn't realize I was on five mile hike with elevations from the top of the gorge. A lot of bridges throughout the trail that are marked but sometimes they you can easily miss them. I followed the red diamond trail which goes around the lakes of Bogue Chitto. They do have horse riding trails and biking trails too which are separate from the hiking trail. You can go canoeing or tubing in the lakes/river and there is also a camping ground too. It's a pretty drive when you exit the Robert exit off Hwy I-12. Make sure your well hydrated and a lot of bug spray! I also was admiring a lake that had a sign to not feed the alligators! (No wonder the gravel was very deep to walk in!) I wasn't able to see a lot of wildlife because it was in the middle of the day but I get to enjoy the sounds of the birds. The path of the hike is well-travelled and dogs should be on a leash. I was actually surprised I saw one family with a double sport stroller along the path?! There is also a white diamond marked route too so I'm certain they took that path. There also are fishing lakes you can fish and one lake has an air conditioned bathroom- a good cool pit stop! I followed the Upper/Lower Gorge Run/discover trail where one part you have to travel a little bit of the paved road and sometimes you have to cross the streets to the other side of the trail. But that was okay for me. There a few benches along the trail and several bridges you can hear the babbling brooks. It was a good hike and is considered a moderate level for hikers. read more

Bogue Chitto State Park is one of the best parks of its kind in Louisiana. I remember when this park opened a few years ago there was a whole lot of fanfare and news articles. I didn't think much of it then, but always kept it in the back of mind as I love Louisiana's state parks. A couple of weekends ago I decided the time had come to explore it and I was amazed that such a nice park is part of our state's park system. This park is located in the middle of nowhere. It's north of Covington almost all the way to Franklinton (Frank-ill-ton if you're local). The drive to the park is quite beautiful especially if you come from the New Orleans area. On the way you will leave the below sea level flatness you are used to and see hills, horse farms, massive plant nurseries and experience all the back roads of Louisiana have to offer. If you have ever been to a state park in Louisiana you will be somewhat shocked when you enter this park. From the moment I saw the sign I knew I was in for a treat. This park is truly amazing. First off, the park is massive. Despite encompassing a smaller area than Fontainebleau State park, Bogue Chitto has more usable area. There are several miles of roads to explore so that's just what I did. The first area I checked out was the overnight camping area. There were 81 camping spots with water and electrical hookups for RVs. I saw several groups using these spots for tent camping so even without an RV you can use those areas. In the general area around the camping spots were shower/bathroom facilities so even if you were tent camping, you wouldn't be totally "roughing it". Next up was the lakes. This park has several of them. After checking that out I found the cabins, group camp area and meeting areas. These facilities were all top notch. Apparently there are only four cabins available and they fill up quickly, but they would make a great weekend retreat. The final feature I checked out was the splash park. This area was filled with kids splashing and playing and enjoying general ridiculousness. If you visit the park and have kids, I suspect you will be spending a lot of time here. I guess I could end my review here, but that wouldn't really tell you about my experience. Driving around this park was incredibly relaxing. Even though I just paid my $2 for day use and didn't stay overnight, I had a great time. There were several spots at the park that were secluded and devoid of any sound other than good ole mother nature. Finding those spots was pretty easy and once I did, I was able to snap a few photos and enjoy being away from it all. I highly recommend you get away and experience that for yourself. read more

I stayed here for 2 nights with a group of friends. It was relaxing and exactly what we needed to recoup after another year of Mardi Gras festivities. The cabins were new and spacious, much nicer than we all expected. We were recommended here from other friends who spent some time up here. The kitchen was well equipped. It says it sleeps eight, but 2 would have to sleep on the pull-out couch which is not the best. We had a crew of 6 and that was perfect. We spent an afternoon wandering the trails and hanging at the day beaches. We especially enjoyed the completely screened in porch. It was bright during the day, and we didn't have to worry about bugs! The only thing missing was a picnic table out by the grill and fire pit. We tried to have lunch out there, but there was just no place to sit. And the place advertised a DVD player, but there was not one. All in all, highly recommended for a quick trip to get away from the city. read more

We stayed a weekend in cabin 4 and LOVED every minute of it. We arrived around 4 pm that day and picked up our keys from the front desk. After we drove a short distance to our cabin. We passed up several trail heads and a horse rental area. The cabin was a spacious 2 bed/1 bath with two bunk beds, a queen bed, and a sofa sleeper. They had toilet paper, a small thing of dish soap, and dishwasher detergent (but no sponge or paper towels so bring your own!). Kitchen had basic utensils and bbq tongs, a pitcher, and some pots. Satellite cable tv. No internet so come prepared! The best part had to be the screened porch in the back which was amazing, especially with the weather finally getting cooler! There is a bbq spit and spot for a fire right in front of the cabin which we used quite a bit. Cabin 4 has the lodge visibly next to it; the other cabins are close but not visible through the trees. So if you want a bit more privacy, the other cabins are a good choice BUT! Cabin 4 is the only one with handicap accessible parking. The others have a bigger distance between the parking and front door. The trail was basically right outside our door. It's a 7 mile trail around the park. There are some stairs that lead to a small platform at the bottom which was really nice. Saw lots of animals: deer, snakes, lizards, squirrels, and spiders... lots of spiders so be warned! Also, if you're a fan of Pokemon Go, there are plenty of spots in the park. There are also various trees that are labeled with what they are. The cabin also had a bird watching guide if you like that sort of thing. We will definitely be back again to rent a cabin and stay in this beautiful park! read more

This place is great! They have tubing, kayaking, canoeing, horse back riding & hiking on nature trails! It's a great place to spend the weekend or an afternoon with friends and family!!! Great family camping location! We stayed across from a pond where kids can fish. There is also a short trail to the "beach" on the river. Extensive trail system... Easy for kids to hike portions. The gorge is a neat surprise for this area, too. We stayed in the lower campground. read more

Beautiful Louisiana state park. We went there for a Friday afternoon hike. $2 per person day pass. The 10 mile hiking trail loops around a red sandstone gorge, small lakes and white sand beach streams, and swamp forest. Well marked gravel trail and educational tree tags to explain the trees, We saw butterflies and woodpeckers. Would definitely come back and maybe try an overnight stay in the cabins. read more

First of all, I would have given a 5 star rating based on facilities, scenery, and park personnel. However the drill sergeant that they hired as "Park Police" must think he's running a prison camp full of inmates. Inhospitable would be the nicest word I could use to describe this guy. Let me set the scene, 2 married 40 somethings show up at the BEAUTIFUL park, and are greeted by "Sgt. Slaughter". After minutes of fumbling around and incompetence, a cheerful young lady who was like a ray of sunshine, stepped in and kindly rented us a campsite to pitch our tent for 1 night. She even pointed us toward a more sought after site, and one better suited for a tent. Yay! So nice. Rain was in the forecast and we were on a motorcycle and lookin forward to the challenge. To make a long story short, a great time was had by all. Until the next morning when the Sarge threw us out in the rain, lol. Park has a 1:00 check out, that's awesome. At 12 o'clock it's raining so I call the front office and speak to the nice lady again. She tells me that since no one is scheduled to come into that site, that I can go ahead and just hang out and it would be okay. About eight campsites immediately around me, and not a single person in one of them. Obviously not the busy season. So I'm still trying to get my stuff together, but because it's raining, and because I spoke to the nice lady in the office, i'm not in such a frenzy to be done by 1:00. Until Sgt. expletive shows up and says that the nice lady has no authority to allow me to do such a heinous thing, so I need to pack up my stuff and leave. I say,"but she said no one else is scheduled to come into this site". He replies "1:30". So me and my wife stood in the pouring rain, packed up our entire campsite, loaded it on the motorcycle and left. But then again this was a Sunday, and I know how you get that mad Sunday/Monday rush of campers. What a clown, I hope he catches a flat tire on his way home every day for the rest of his life. I'm just glad he didn't taze me. Beautiful park, "almost" everyone there is super friendly. $34 bucks is a lil steep for tent camping, but I'd pay it again. read more
