Paul is a great bakery chain and was our breakfast stop near our hotel across the street from the Gloucester Underground stop. Thinking back, we could have sought out a traditional heavy english breakfast but we did not know where to go and this was convenient on our trip to the tube. Sure beat the breakfast offered for purchase in our hotel lobby. Boyfriend chose a toasted ham and cheese croissant sandwich and I went for the Montagnard sandwich: brilliantly bright colored fresh Coppa ham, Comte cheese, tomaotoes, olive paste, salad leaves on poppy seed bread. Bread was so yummy and the sandwich combination complemented each other deliciously. Staff was so nice, courteous and provided customer service with a warm smile. Lovely. Our sandwiches to go for breakfast/brunch/lunch sure hit the spot and fueled us for our day of adventure in London. read more

Paul is a chain found all around London, and a few in Paris too. I fell in love with the salad with goat cheese and sun dried tomatoes at this location. Each location has different salads and sandwiches and some locations have no salads at all. It was the perfect meal to take along with me while sightseeing. They had yummy pastries too. I remember the first time I went to Paul's and it felt so fancy and so francais and...oui oui oui! Now it's not quite as remarkable: the chain has grown, and there are also many other cafes around, so I don't make it in as often. However, when I pop up at South Kensington Station Paul's is just outside the Tube stop, along with Gail's and some other options. Paul's line always seems to move a little more quickly, so it has somehow become my go-to. Basic wins: 1. fair amount of outside seating 2. small space on the ground floor, but upstairs seating AND a line that moves quickly 3. CHAI LATTES! 4. I really like the baguette-style bread they use for their sandwiches. The plain salami and gherkin and ham and butter are just really solid staples that...erm...(student alert)...can sit in your bag for part of a morning without other students calling you out for a pungent lunch. It's the little things! The big baguette sandwiches (which truly can be two mini-meals) are something like 3.50 for takeaway which is totes legit in my books. I come to Paul almost exclusively for their baguettes as I find their patisserie to be on the sloppy side more often than not. That said, their baguettes are as good as you can find at an (inter)national chain. Crispy, chewy and flavourful, these baguettes are superior to many of the artisanal baguettes coming out of the best bakeries in London. Plus, a petit flut is only 99p. The staff are always very nice and they manage to handle the huge ques very well. Last night I grabbed a small baguette as they were closing, but as I walked out of the door decided I'd prefer a large -- the lady handed me another large baguette on the house. For being a chain operation, Paul's is pretty damn good. Their atmosphere is one of understated rustic with a French twist. I took my boyfriend here for a pick me up after his transatlantic flight and he said "I wish they had chains like this in the States". He's right, you certainly don't feel like you are in a chain when you're sipping your latte or enjoying your scone. Paul's is different that just another coffee shop because of the aforementioned atmospheric charm and the good quality of service offered. I will definitely have to try another location before I leave London! read more

I like the concept behind Paul but am always disappointed by the actual experience. This particular place in Gloucester Road is always busy but does not have enough seats or tables to sit at. It is therefore very cramped if you want to sit down to enjoy your coffee and croissant. I have found the croissants, pain au chocolat etc. to be good (but not of the quality one finds in France). The coffee is so-so. The rest of the food and bread looks lovely but I have not tried it. The service is always unfriendly and I have yet to see a smile.
