A lovely couple runs this little Winery/tasting room; They do everything from winemaking to wine tastings. They're adorable, and the wine is delicious. We brought a couple of friends and had a beautiful Sunday afternoon sipping and enjoying this lovely outdoor space. If you're in the neighborhood, you should stop by, have a sip or two or more, and grab a couple of bottles with you. This place is worth your time. The service was impeccable. Just a short drive from Santa Rosa we drove through the vineyards and arrived at this small family owned tasting room in the town of Graton. Cute corner wine tasting spot located in Graton, CA which is just a town next over from Petaluma and Rohnert Park, like going towards Guerneville/Bodega Bay. They have both indoor and outdoor seating. It's a $40 tasting for 6 pours. The owner was so friendly and she mentioned they do special pairing events. Great local wines and such a cute spot! All I can say is wow to their Pinots. Just wow! It could have been the day or the second tasting of the day, but wow their Pinots are delicious! Pinots aren't my preferred red wine, I love me a good zin. These Pinots here are very deep, complex and flavorful. Most Pinots are more on the light side and has a very tart after finish, but these Pinots are very fruit forward and a smooth oaky finish. We love their TNT and Ruxton. Their RRV is great too! Bought many bottles. Was not a fan of the Cab Franc but that's bc it's not my preferred wine. Their granche was good too. They have some snacks if you get hungry. $40 tasting fee (a little steep) but waived with 2 bottle purchase. Which is easily done! The owner Barbara was there and friendly. She was very knowledgeable. Was recommended this place from Emeritus. Bottles are around $40-50. Highly recommended if you love Pinots. read more

This stop #3 during our Wine Cube Tour. Located in the quaint town of Grafton - we were lucky enough to have a private appointment at the Paul Matthew Vineyard tasting room. This winery is small - how small you might ask, try a total production of 2500 cases a year...a year! And that's both reds and whites. We tried a variety of reds and whites - including 2011 Chardonnay, 2012 Valdiguie (a variety I had never heard of much less tried before), 2010 Pinot Noir, and a 2012 Cab Franc. I usually make notes on the tasting menu given to me with a * next to my favorites. After the tasting I looked down and each varietal that I tried had a * next to it. The Chardonnay, aged in oak but did not have an acidic taste that I normally hate, the Valdigue aged on 80 year old vines whose smell was as good as its taste, Pinot Noir grown on a small 2 acre vineyard, and Cab Franc (my first ever) aged in 100% stainless steel with notes of cherry were all consistent in taste and aroma. A small production vineyard, yes, but definitely one to check out. They may have only been in production since 1999 but their wines will make you take notice, and if you are like me, a bottle or two might make it's way back home with you. read more

Very good pinots and they also make good Chardonnay and viognier. If you are lucky they make one of the better rose of Pinot noir we have tried but not this year. They only make the Rose when they have enough Pinot grapes to support their full red Pinot noir collection. Staff is friendly and the tasting room in downtown Graton is nice. read more

Paul Matthews makes some of the best wine in Sonoma. Their Pinot is my favorite. This place is a true hidden gem although not that hidden... it's located in the heart for Graton. The owners are a joy to talk to and are always pouring in the tasting room. If you would like a real treat check out Paul Matthews on your next wine tasting excursion, you won't be disappointed. Quick stop in for a tasting of their 2013 Pinot Rose on my way back to work.... I'd love to go back on a weekend and do the full tasting, but as it was, I knew what I was there for and figured I'd taste the one wine before buying. It did not disappoint. Go check them out, and try their rose! Make sure it's been sitting out for a little while though so you get the full flavor. My daughter arranged a Fathers day get together at this winery. We had planned on sitting out in their beautiful courtyard, but the day was to hot. Matt allowed us to bring the party inside the tasting room, which was very generous. We sampled his wines, and I was really pleased with the quality, and complexity of his wines. We had several Pinot's, which were balanced nicely. My favorite was the Cab Franc. I highly recommend trying Paul Mathew's out. You wont be disappointed. read more

Wonderful Tasting Room in the heart of downtown Graton. They have a variety of wines but do focus mostly on Pinot noirs. All of their grapes are sourced between Graton and the Bodega coast The service at this wine tasting room is fantastic. On most days the people working there are actually the owners. Very friendly, very accommodating and very warm people. The wine is great. I highly recommend a tasting so you can pick out your favorites. Tip: great spot to stop into if you have a brunch plan and have to wait for your table. read more

Had this pinot noir at Boon Eat and Drink and decided to visit the winery the next day. We came in during the middle of a wine club member event but they were very friendly to my wife and I, including giving us tastings of things meant for the wine club members. Wonderful wines! Every time I am in a restaurant in Sonoma County I know that if I order Paul Mathews anything...I will be satisfied. Affonti, Mosaic...I am set. I met the winemaker Mat Gustafson at a Pinot Days event and he was very nice. He poured us through his flight and talked about each varietal and Russian River Valley. 2006 Ruxton Vineyard Pinot Noir is great! Also the TNT Vineyard and Gamay Noir. The woman performing the tasting (wine maker, owner) thought she was too cool for school. The location in Graton is great and the tasting room itself nice hence the couple of stars. The Pinot is not bad, but certainly not spectacular (84-86 IMO), I may have paid $20 for the single vineyards but expect more in terms of complexity and balance at the $45 price point. The actual reason for the Meh review was our host's manners - she promptly walked away and chatted with an incoming local, leaving us with empty glasses for longer than appropriate. When discussing the wine I felt I was being lectured about RRV being the best Pinot producing region, she has been making wine for 25 years, etc. rather than having a conversation. For example, she commented the wines have no tannins, which is obviously wrong. When I corrected her, I was then told I was mistaken and detecting acid. Well, I'm pretty sure I know the difference and per my later review of my ratings app, Wine Spectator agrees with me. read more

Simply superb wines. If you want to have old world style Pinot, Gamay and Chard you will love Paul Mathew wines. The pinots are higher acid with lower tannins, and the only white ( a chard) is not over oaked. There are so many options in Sonoma, but Matt Gustafson's (wine maker and co-owner with his wife Barb) wines are in the top top tier. We drink a lot of wine (meaning literally a lot), and enjoy their food friendly wines. read more

I love their wine. I'm a big fan of Russian River pinots, and I've found it increasingly difficult to find a solid pinot for under $50 (I know, ridiculous, right?!). However, Paul Mathew's pinots are all under $50 AND their Russian River Valley pinot (which is a blend of 3 single vineyards if memory serves me correctly) is $32, which is an absolute steal. I even told them point blank that they should be charging more for the quality of this wine. The tasting room is on the main drag in Graton, and it's simple (bar style) and nice. Barb (who's a wine sommelier and also happens to be the spouse of the winemaker) took great care of us, and even remembered my name the 2nd time I went in there. Highly recommended if you like value Pinots (i think their stuff is much better than Siduri pinot which is at a similar price point) and are looking for something a little more off the beaten path. And for those of you love looking to "compare" palates, some of my favorite pinots include Papapietro Perry (just about their whole line up) and Paul Hobbs RRV--and one other good value Pinot I've found is Sequana Santa Lucia Highlands--occasionally at Costco for $19.99 (if you see it there, buy as much as you can...) read more

We did a wine tasting with Barb and it was a great experience. The wine was exceptional. If you like pinots, trying Paul Mathew is a must. There is so much range in the tastes coming from their different vineyards. They are taking all the necessary precautions to make people feel safe and comfortable visiting in the current environment. In my opinion, one of the many underrated Pinot Noir & Chardonnay wineries in the world. If you crave for finesse & sophistication in Burgundian-style wines, then Paul Mathew Vineyards' Pinot Noir & Chardonnay certainly will not disappoint your palate. However, I strongly suggest you look somewhere else if you're looking for trendy, overhyped, overpriced tooty fruity Pinot Noir. I highly recommend "blind-tasting" as I definitely believe this has helped me "honed" my taste preferences in wines. We tried the Paul Mathew Rose at a restaurant in Jenner and wanted to take some home with us. Unfortunately the winery was closed the days we were in the area, so I contacted them via Facebook to find where we could buy their wines. Barb was quick to respond and even offered to meet us the next day at the tasting room. What a wonderful experience! Their Rose is great, as is the Viognier and the Gewurztraminer. Matt, the winemaker, made his Rose this year (not a yearly occurrence - limited production). We found Paul Mathew winery originally on a recommendation because of their Rose. We think it is the best we have tasted of any Rose this year. Grab some food to go from Willowood (try the salmon sandwich) or Underwood, buy a bottle of the Rose, and sit out back in their outdoor area. read more

I was recommended to go here by a friend of Paul Mathew's. The woman in the tasting room was extremely rude and caddy. I first tried to go the bathroom prior to my tasting and she quickly denied me access. Thus I preferred to spend my money elsewhere. Given there is not a shortage of wineries this was not a problem. Came here for Winter Wineland. A very nice lady started helping us out and then the owner took over and suddenly...we had a similar experience to others here. She was snooty and seemed annoyed that we were there. I actually really liked the wines and immediately thought to myself that I was going to get the second delicious wine on the list. When we got to the next bottle she decided she wasn't going to open it for us since there was none open and it was toward the end of the day. I guess I understand that but shees, at least be nice about it. I ended up not getting the wine even though I wanted it. There are lots of delicious tasting rooms in the area. Try one of those instead where people are welcoming. 4 stars for the wine. -2 for the owner. Way to make a sale. read more

Love the wines and the hospitality! Always have to stop by when we're in Sonoma County. I have been coming here at least once a year for several years and cannot imagine anyone having a problem with the wines or the hospitality ... I'd suggest the negative reviewers take a look in the mirror at their own attitudes!
