First off: this is a school. Students are learning how to cut hair, under the direct tutelage of their teachers. Things take longer to accomplish, and perfection is a moving target for beginners. That being said, I received a high-quality hair cut for only $10. (My understanding is that this school also offers $5 haircuts on Wednesdays.) They also offer facials, which, given my very dry skin, was quite welcome. It had been many years since I'd indulged in such rehabilitative self-care. The only issue that I had is that when it came time to pay, they didn't have enough money in the cash register to break a $20 bill. I had to use a credit card. I can't rate my experience at Paul Mitchell. I don't think they have an F rating. I have been natural for years. I decided that I would try a perm. Wrong decision. Not only is my hair dry as the Sahara Desert. It is now breaking off. I called and was told to come in for a deep conditioning. I'm not going in that place every again. I'm not sure if it's because they can't perm Black hair? I'm just appalled. The color only last for about 7 hours. I have had some good experiences, but this time I need to consult someone else about them never perming hair again. If they did it free for a year I would politely turned them down. I had another great experience at Paul Mitchell The School Memphis! I saw Raylee, and she was super friendly, professional, and very skilled for being a student in Phase 1. She paid attention to detail, which is so important when it come to getting your hair colored and cut. She spent extra time curling my hair after blowing it out, which looked really fabulous! I'm really looking forward to seeing her again in 7 weeks :) My Mom saw Hannah, and she told me she was really happy with her hair and that Hannah was also great at her job and super sweet! The salon was packed and the learning leaders and the guest relations staff were quite busy when I was there, but they made sure everything flowed the way it needed to. PLEASE be cautious if you are looking to start school here. I attended this school for a year and you could not pay me to go back. The students were great, we all struggled together and encouraged one another to stay strong. I just couldn't do it anymore. There is no communication between staff, and there's only two instructors on the floor with a full floor of students. I know it seems manageable, but it isn't. Not with the staff they have. Sure, some teachers are absolutely amazing but the head instructor is cruel. He will belittle you for asking for help on something you've never been taught. Which seems a little unfair considering they throw you on the floor to take clients after just a couple weeks. I'm all for getting practice but if I need help, I shouldn't be talked to like I'm a burden. Especially since I'm working on a real person!!! And don't even get me started on the security. They told me they have 24 hr security, FALSE! What they actually have is an Imperial Security van that drives around the whole shopping center, not just the school. Our cars were getting broken into left and right, and all the security did was drive away before anyone noticed. I had so many strange men walk up to my window in as I arrived for school. One even licked my window. (I wish I was kidding.) All in all, this school is just a ploy for money like most trade schools these days. They will do whatever they can to "drop" you. For me, my attendance had dropped to below 90% so I had to come in for makeup hours. Well, they closed the school for a "mental health day" on the day I was supposed to come in (no notice beforehand) and I was dropped the following week. I did try to explain but the administrators communicate to us through text and no one responded. I probably could have spoken with administration and been forgiven, but honestly, all I felt was relief when I got the news. That school was horrendous. I have always had an amazing experience here and the teachers monitor the students well. They notice the little things like when they don't put the cape on before they go mix the color for me. I am not very picky and I'm usually pleased when people give me haircuts and style my hair. I decided to go to this place because my stylist back home did her training at Paul Mitchell and i thought it would be fine. Once I got there the girl began cutting my hair and her teacher was close and kinda showing her how to do it. The cut was okay. She did exactly what I asked her to do. Now when it came to styling my hair she blow dried it at low heat. I asked for a simple blow out with curls at the end. I have very frizzy hair. She now dried my hair and it was still kinda wet. When I told her it's still wet she replies by saying "it's dry to me". When she finished I asked her to add more volume to my crown and she did a horrible job of it. The teacher was no where to be found at this point and she never came back but she signed off on her. She didn't even bother to straighten my hair or fix the frizzy hair. If this is how this particular school is teaching aspiring cosmetologists then I could do a better job of styling hair. I was really upset I ended up just leaving and fixing my own hair later. I don't really care about the haircut because I know you are still learning. But every stylist that was a student up to this girl always did a great job with styling my hair. While I did get the trim I requested, it took 2 hours and 45 minutes. The place is not highly organized (maybe a Memphis thing). Reception was slow, people walking around in a daze or on their phones and a 20 minute wait for my scheduled appointment. The shampoo & conditioning took an hour, then another hour& a half for trim & blow dry. My hair came out ok, but I'm not sure the money I saved on Groupon was worth the time I spent. read more

I had the most horrible experience here. I went in to get my roots done dark brown which I was like how can you mess this up right? I understand that they are students, but understanding that you are dealing with a dark color & that you should protect the clients face should be 101. She got hair dye on my edges, face, nose, eyelids and neck (color was almost black) she didn't even know how to wash my hair as I still had so much hair dye left that I was wiping off at the counter. I gave them 2 stars because the manager was trying to make it right, but at the end of the day they should of took over and finished it. On top of that I was there for 3 hours. I've been here several times. Aside from not being allowed to drink my coffee during an early appointment & several students with no business etiquette (i.e. Standing while the cashier is asking you to leave a tip) my experiences have been great. I took my three girls to get highlights. The only reason I went was to support a friend who is in school there. My girl's hair turned out amazing but the reason I am rating this a 2, is because the Instructor (Cleo) was extremely unprofessional. She made unnecessary negative comments towards the students and she was very rude to me. She seemed irritated that we were going to spend all day there. I just went for the first time today. Scheduling the appt was easy. Sent in a request with my info and received a confirmation the next day. Wait time: Waited almost 20 min before I was called. Found out they only put me with that girl because I had been waiting a while. (Front desk person was talking to my stylist about it while I was in the chair) Color: NOT GOOD. When I brush it back, the left side of my hair is dark and the right has highlights. PATCHY highlight work, some of them start from the scalp some are a few cms lower. It also looks orange in some places. My stylist in Houston highlights my hair and lightens the all over color underneath without using bleach. I think I confused them slightly at first because the teacher asked if I could call my colorist in Houston so they knew what she did. I don't have her number or know her schedule at Visible Changes or else I would have. I would have loved to have seen a color swatch for the highlights but wasn't shown one and what I got looks nothing like the picture I showed. The girl was almost done with the highlights when I realized they weren't planning on lightening my base color. Despite me having emphasized that my hair was lightened all over AND highlighted she had no plans to do it until I brought it up again. Teacher comes back and we get that figured out. I've now been in the chair for almost two hours. NEVER has my scalp started burning until this visit. It gets pretty bad so I let her know and she gets a water bottle and squirts my hair and the burning calms down. By the time she finished it was almost one. The first foil of highlight had gone on a little after 11 from the notes the stylist jotted on the paper. I had hair dye in my hair for over 2 hrs. I was just hoping I had hair by the time I left. It's all there but most of it feels dead. I was told that to avoid the bleach my colorist has to be using some buffer of sorts that the students aren't allowed to use. It could be why I wasn't able to get the more blonde highlights I normally get which I understand, but I wish I would have been told it would look NOTHING like what I requested. The time spent applying color was crazy and I do think it's why my scalp started burning. I know nothing about color but having hair dye on for over 2 hrs seems risky. That said, I threw a bit of a curve ball by asking for highlights without using bleach and they tried their best... I guess. Overall not a good job. They said they could still do something like what I showed them which is why I went through with the highlights. Had I known, I would have just had them do an all over color instead. Just overall not good. Other negative: color everywhere! I've been scrubbing at it since I came home and it won't come off. It's on my jaw, my neck, my face, my cheek. The girl even was like "oh god I got it all over you." She tried scrubbing it off and I guess stopped when it didn't completely come off. Cut: The cut was okay at first glance. I asked for a longer angled bob with some layers. No angle, no layers, random long strands of hair hanging down at the bottom. didn't see any of it when I left because it was curled. Again, slight miscommunication. I'm used to loose beachy waves like in the pic I showed her. She did really tight curls. She had no way of knowing my hair would just get bushy trying to brush those out. It got a little shirley temple. Total time: Arrived 9:55am. Paid at/Left: 3:10PM YUP 5 hrs Final Thoughts: Going back? No. Unless, it's just for a cut and then I'd request someone else. Getting color AND cut corrected next Saturday somewhere else. read more

I called and got an apointment with a phase two student that is suppose to know how to do highlights. When I arrived the student that did my hair didn't have a clue how to do highlights. He was so slow by the time he finished part of my hair the other half was over processed. He toned it twice and I was there from 5:00- 9:30 p.m. They made me pay even though he messed my hair up. Did not fix it I had to go somewhere else and pay to have it fixed. They had about 20 students standing around doing nothing yet they gave me one that was clueless about highlighting. When I made the appointment, I specifically put I wanted BLUE PEAKABOO HAIR. No problem. When I got there, still no problem... My stylist Kim(who had blue hair!!) and I went over what I wanted and she was ready to start, we just needed the "teacher" to sign off on it. Steven came over and started going off about blue hair. First he kept stating that blue hair was not natural(well duh!), then he kept repeating about primary colors. "Blue+yellow=green, so if I put blue in your hair it will come out green." Then he had the audacity to tell me, "You need to go to a salon for blue hair. This is a school not a salon." Last I knew you were supposed to be TEACHING someone how to do hair in a salon, which includes coloring hair!! Then Steven snarkly snatched the paper from Kim and commented "I wont sign off on this hair, maybe someone else is stupid enough to." You know it took EVERYTHING I had to stay seated in that chair. I ended up just getting blonde highlights, which turned out fine. Ms Kim and Ms Misty both made me feel more comfortable. But, I would never return to Paul Mitchell because of Steven. He is the rudest person I have ever encountered while getting my hair done. I will make sure to let everyone know not to go to Paul Mitchell, just so they don't have to endure the rudeness of Steven. read more

Do not under any circumstances go here to get your hair cut or colored! I went in for a simple root touch up, highlights and cut. I came out with platinum highlights, red hair and a terrible haircut. These are students and are supposed to be supervised while doing a clients hair. The only supervisor I saw was too busy talking to another person from the office to take any note of what her students were doing. She never once came over to see what was going on with my hair. I have since had my color and cut corrected and the stylist could not believe the mess they had made of my hair. The only thing I could recommend this school for would be children's buzz cuts. I went to Paul Mitchell for cut and color and I had a great experience. Veronica is amazing! So kind and easy going and very excited about starting her career. This was her first time doing highlights (glad she told me afterwards or else I would have been extra nervous )and I was very impressed. The only thing I would "dislike" about my experience is the length of time. But being students and that they are learning and trying to do their absolute best it's completely understandable. Poor Management I had an appointment Saturday, 4/28/17 for Roller Set @ 11:15am with Rod. It was a new person at front desk and I showed appointment card to view. I was told Rod was not doing hair upon that date and he was assisting other students. I asked if I could talk with him, she stated No. I asked for management, she stated she was, with an arrogant smile. I asked of her name, she spoke and spelled it as Jaimie Hobbs. I asked was there anyone in office that assist students and asked if I could speak with someone in management above her, she stated NO. I will only have to speak with her and she is the only manager in shop. I told her I will come back the following week, then I left the office. I came back to office on Tuesday and spoke with Caroline Salmon, Director. I informed the problem. She stated she viewed the camera that was able to view and hear conversation. She stated Jaimie did nothing wrong. I asked to view video? They had laptop and stated it was ready for me to view, then all of a sudden they stated problem with system. I told her it will be reported. Caroline stated it doesn't matter she receive all letters from Executives. She stated Jaimie did nothing wrong. I told her it is not over, complaint will be issued. Jaimie then stated she was sorry. I told her you're forgiven, but has poor management before the students and customers. Then I left the office. read more

Came with a groupon deal. The student I had was not very good. I had short short stands when he trimmed my bangs. Rest of my hair looked unchanged. I got a color with my cut and it was terrible. Dye was on the floor,on my clothes, skin when he finished. I lost so many stands due to how harsh he was with my hair during the color. He didn't wash all the color out. He just wiped the rest of my hair and neck with a towel to rub off excess day. Color poorly distributed. And the coloring was everywhere. I could cut and dye my own hair better! read more

Worst hair cut I've ever gotten. I just get the very popular and simple undercut hairstyle and have never had any problems getting it cut anywhere else. The lady that cut my hair was awful. I showed her a picture of what I wanted and she barely looked at it and just started doing her own thing. She would barely talk to me during the cut, very unpleasant. It took her an hour to cut my hair, all she had to do was cut of the sides of my hair and cut off the any split ends off the hair on top. She missed a bunch of hair on the sides making my hair stick out and she cut the hair line of my hair on top straight across instead of rounding it up, I've never seen it that way and it looked terrible. She asked me what kind of styling products I like and I told her I use clays. She came back with hairspray and not a clay! When I asked her why, she said that her friend told her hair spray would do better. For how long it took her, I would've thought she could have done a better job. I guess the good thing is that my hair grows back fast. All in all I'm very dissatisfied and will not be returning. Please do yourself a favor and don't put yourself through the terrible haircut that you'd receive if you went there... terrible!. read more

I'm shocked at the bad reviews since I have gotten several cuts here and have been pleased. However, these ARE students and YOU must know what YOU want and be able to describe it - they don't have crystal balls! I bring a picture and politely refuse to let them do something I don't like (like goop my hair up with product I won't use at home) or "thin" my hair - it's thick and I want to keep it that way. I say "I'm 50+ and I've had this hair all my life, so I do know what it will and won't do". I've always had lively, intelligent students, love the price, and fully support this place. read more

This was probably the worst haircut and worst experience at a salon I have ever had. I was there for over 2 hours getting a simple hair cut. I asked to have at least 4 inches cut off and long layers. What I got was maybe a half inch trim and layer that looks awful and uneven. I am not a picky person when it comes to my hair but even my boyfriend who wouldn't notice if I changed the color to blue said my hair looked jacked up. The front desk staff seemed too busy trying to coordinate a lunch order when I arrived. I understand this is a school so I was not expecting that much but what I got still was very unimpressive. The stylist cut my hair dry. A teacher told her she shouldn't have dried my hair first but then didn't bother making her redo it and just let her continue. I didn't get any sort of style after the cut and my hair had a bunch of dents in it from the clips used to pin it up when you cut it. I had to ask a staff member to move out of the way twice as I was leaving and she just gave me a rude look. This wasn't even worth the $16 I spent on the groupon and I will never return. Went with my grandmother to get a shellac manicure and it looked horrible! Not only that but they are very very slow and had maybe 4 colors that were all thrown into a tacky box. I tried to give them one more chance but when I called to make an appointment I could never get ahold of someone. If I could give Paul Mitchell The School- Memphis zero stars... I would. The students and their teachers are nothing short of unprofessional. My coworker made an appointment with the front desk during the day for an appointment at night, and when she called a few days later to reschedule, no one answered the phone. I accompanied her to her appointment, since she was unable to reschedule, and had no other means of transportation that night, and they told her she wasn't even booked for an appointment. When she asked for the girl she spoke with on the phone, she was informed that "No one by that name works here", and when we asked why she wasn't on the 'book', we were told that this school doesn't even take appointments. That would be great if this was my only complaint. When she came up to the sitting room to show me her hair after this girl had done her hair in the level two section which was supposed to be better, her hair almost looked green. Now I am sure that might be stylish for the younger crowd, but I'd like to mention, my coworker is 52. When we got to the car in the parking lot, after being hovered around until this student was finally 'tipped' my coworker burst into tears. It took us about twenty minutes of talking in the car before she finally calmed down. Her biggest complaint to me was that this school was so filthy and the people so unprofessional. The staff was incredibly rude, and when it was time to pay they asked her if she wanted to make another appointment and they seemed insulted when she said no. They must be BLIND!! Did they not look at her hair? WHY WOULD ANYONE RESCHEDULE OR EVEN MAKE ANY APPOINTMENTS HERE?? This is a failure of a facility. After seeing my coworkers hair, I vow to NEVER enter the Paul Mitchell The School again while I am still breathing. I don't suggest or recommend that ANYONE ever go to this school to get their hair done. You will have better luck, with friendlier people and staff going to a professional salon. I'd rather spend $500.00 on my hair then to let some arrogant child "PLAY" with my hair. Worse experience in my life! I asked for highlights between level 7 and 8. I used the key word "natural looking" balayage. The girl put my hair to a level 11 and try to tone it down, but even with the toner it was a level 9. I have no idea why she could not tone it down correct level after she mistakingly lighten it way too much. She did the total opposite of what I asked for. She gave me horrible uneven bright yellow ombre. Too make matters worse, the frontdesk lady was rude, and kept giving me a nasty look. The mentor told her to set up an appointment to tone my hair down, but she did not do it. I had pretty hair before I went in, and now it is hideous. Now I have to shell at even more money to get someone to fix my hair without hopefully doing too much damage. read more

Man I wish I had better things to say about this place! I was really looking forward to coming here and having a student cut my hair. See you have to understand that they are students! Not yet professionals. I thought I was going to get a good deal but I ended up spending $15.00 for a 2 hour trim. It was definitely a waste of money, I could have gone to a real professional for $15.00. The studio itself has a pleasing aesthetic. You know you got the mirrors and all the people with their mannequin dolls styling, cutting, and blowing the hair. I will say the played really good music though. So my stylist has only been in the program for 11 months. I know this because I asked her. By the way she never told me her name or greeted me she just said come back here. She didn't really understand how to use a guard on the clippers or how to make my hair the way I wanted it. Her supervisor actually ended up finishing my hair and I still had to trim up the sides by myself when I got home. I guess if you're a girl who needs like a full out color, cut, perm, ext then maybe just maybe you can have some one experiment on your head. This was my second visit to this location. Both times I've done a cut and color, this time we added a keratin treatment and style to the cut and color because it was part of a Groupon purchase. To book this appointment I called and left a message. They returned my call and I booked the appointment. I had a schedule change so I called back a few days later and they very nicely allowed me to move my appointment back an hour. I AM SO HAPPY!!! My color is FANTASTIC! My stylist was Crystal C. and she was just fantastic. We started off our appointment with a consultation about what I was looking for. She understood just was I was looking for in regards to color. She called over the Supervisor for a consultation and then we got started. Because Crystal is a student, the procedure does go slower than with a more experienced stylist, but that is to be expected when you are going to a school and making an appointment with a student. Crystal was very methodical and detail oriented. She had an excellent chair-side manner and was very friendly and professional. After my color had processed she washed my hair, conditioned it, and then added the treatment. My treatment processed under the dryer for 15 or 20 minutes then we rinsed and did my cut. All I asked for was a simple trim. Crystal got a little guidance from another Supervisor on my trim and then began to style my hair. Since it was getting late, another student stylist jumped in and helped finish my blow dry and my style. When I put my glasses on and looked in the mirror I was completely THRILLED! The color is fantastic, even better than what I was imagining! My cut and style were awesome! My hair is super soft from the treatment. I paid $14 via Groupon for my cut, style, and keratin treatment and $32 for my color. I tipped generously. I feel I got a fantastic value. Even better, my fiance loves my color! Most of the students you can book appointments with are Level 1 students. If you still want to try out the school but want someone with more experience, you can book an appointment with a Level 2 student for slightly higher fees. PROS - Low prices, great student stylists, lots of supervision CONS - Expect your services to take about twice as long as they would with a more experienced stylist. The main floor where you receive services is fairly loud. BOTTOM LINE - I have never had color I liked more. I will be back! read more

I've gone to Paul Mitchell for about two years now for highlights and have never had any complaints. Most of the time they have looked just how I wanted. This summer, I decided I wanted to tone down the blondeness of my hair and go to a more cool ashy light brown. I showed the girl a picture and she acted like it was no problem! I trusted her and was excited...but when she pulled the towel off my head my hair had turned RED! I had to visit two other salons to get anything close to the color I had wanted. I was told that I should have arrived before 3:00 PM to get a haircut for my daughter and me, but the receptionist didn't tell me that I had to arrive before 3:00 PM when I call to ask about getting a haircut for my daughter and myself. Never again. It took 2 hours to do a simple haircut......that would have been fine had it been a good one. It looked fine when I left, but has been disastrous since the first time I washed and tried to style. Hair length is all over place. Believe it or not, the cut wasn't even the worst part. They need to teach business etiquette and understanding. My stylist was right next to me when the cashier asked if I wanted to tip. Sooooo rude. I told the cashier to round my total up to $20. Instead of doing this, he charged me for a $20 tip. Who in the world tips that much? Another student was asking my person questions about an exam - while she was cutting my hair. Very unprofessional. These students need more supervision. The teachers were off to the side chatting with each other the whole time. The students clearly aren't ready for the real world.
