Be sure to ask for a stylist that knows the Deva Curl process for cutting AND setting. My daughters had an amazing cut/set the first visit years ago. But when they returned it was less impressive. I brought my daughter back recently and while the cut was great, the set was pitiful. She went straight home and re set it herself and it looked 10 times better. read more

Worst experience and worst haircut of my life. I told them I had straight hair so my mistake they trying to give me some DEVA cut for curly hair. I'm Caucasian with straight hair. I now have a hideous uneven cut that I can't even style. It's so short there's nothing I can do. It was a nightmare experience. I wouldn't recommend this place to anyone unless you have long curly hair. Mine is absurdly cut up and definitely not flattering. I can't even look at myself in the mirror. Great Lengths is an incredible hair salon. My hair was done by Elizabeth. Elizabeth is the most amazing hairstylist that has ever lay hands on my hair. I came for a deva/curl cut. They asked for pictures of my hair to let her see what she had to work with before even meeting me in person. I added pictures of what my hair looked like 3 days in and when it's done. It was a good guide for what she needed to do. After my life changing hair session was done. I couldn't stop bragging about her excellence. She truly listened to what I had to say and with her expertise she answered any questions I had about my curly hair. To top it all off, I went home with a review of everything I learned. This place is great for a haircut for curly hair. But not a color. I walked in for a new look. I told the lady I wanted to look very different when I walked out, but I didn't want Koolaid hair. She dyed it a red you can't see unless I'm standing the sunlight. I asked for something a little less subtle and that didn't require me to ask folks to step outside so they could see my awesome new hair. She dyed it fuschia. Total bill $305. To get a dark color to cover up the now Koolaid hair, another $100. Now, I'll be clear that I didn't go in with a concrete plan. But I should have been able to put myself in the hands of professionals. And to fix it, they definitely shouldn't charge me even more. I'd go back for a cut, but never a makeover situation. read more

I am sure for certain types of people this salon would receive rave reviews. I went here awhile back and had an amazing hair cut! I loved it but it felt like going into a car dealership. The products were being pushed to an insane length- I understand that all salons push products but this was more than pushing. When I checked out, they had already put the products on my bill without even making sure I wanted to buy them. When I tipped, the $100 products made the tip multiply. ( I decided that I did like the way everything made my hair feel and at the time I was suffering from intense scalp psoriasis which I had called to the salon to specify that it was ok for me to receive a cut/ use product) I bought them anyways. The next day I went home with a burning scalp. My psoriasis had intensified and I was litterally bleeding. I realized after discontinuing use of the product for a few weeks my scalp got better... A wedding came around and I wanted to look my best so I used it again thinking the Devacurl No Poo was not the issue. It was!!!! My scalp was peeling after only one use! I looked like I had been scalped by horror villian. I will personally never go back to this establishment. read more

This place is AMAZING! Everyone is very friendly and welcoming. My stylist was Melody Birdsong. I was born with curly hair, and till now I used to hate haircuts because every stylist cut my hair and styled it straight, which looked great at the salon, but difficult to do at home without damaging hair. Moreover, I don't like straight hair on me. Therefore, after a lot of looking around, I found Great Lengths. I must say I am not going to get a haircut from anyone else other than Melody Birdsong as long as I live in Memphis! She took great care in studying my hair, and what I want. Then she taught me specifically how I should cleanse, condition and style my hair for it to look perfectly healthy and naturally curly. Loved it! read more

Worst customer service!! Will not get my business or recommendations. I was a new client, and I was supposed to get Deva curl cut and highlight with Brooke. I was running 10 minutes late (my poor puppy had been vomiting all morning!), so I called to let them know I would be a tad late. As I was about to be there, the receptionist calls me to let me know Brooke would only do the cut or the color because I was 10 minutes late. I was shocked by this-- it's 10 minutes. I work in healthcare-- I cannot imagine ever considering to tell my patients I can only treat one of your problems because they were 10 minutes late. If I am good at my job, I can make up for loss time. I can understand 30 minutes or maybe even 20. But really this is a service industry-- accommodating clients is a high percentage of your job. I've been to a lot of different hair salons over the years, in many different cities. While I've only lived in Memphis the last 7 years and so used only a few - regardless of the city - this is one of the best! ever. The receptionist is friendly and attentive when you walk in the door. Melody cut my curly hair in the best cut its ever had that really set my curls free. PLUS she was full of tips on how to solve any problem I could express AND they all worked. The price was very fair for the value I got. Really cool. I'm sorry to see the negative reviews. Going to this salon has really changed my hair for the better. I only get haircuts, never tried color there. I have seen Melody 3 times for 3 Devacuts and always loved them. She's really sweet and fun, and she does a really good job with my hair. She always tries to tailor the cuts for my individual hair, like she remembers that I don't like my hair to be weighed down with too many products and that the front grows faster than the back and she cuts and styles accordingly. And the cuts themselves are really great. You can go six months between cuts, which kind of makes up for Devacuts' hefty price tag. I highly recommend this place if you are a person with curly hair. I haven't tried any of their other services there, so I can't comment on them, but the cuts are fantastic. Definitely give them a try! read more

The owner takes the staff to continuing education classes all over the country. I don't try to tell them what to do and I always love my hair. I get both cut and color at the Salon. I know of stylists who have worked at Great Lengths to have the opportunity to be mentored and learn from Carol. One small business that doesn't care about losing customers: I HAD been a customer of this salon for almost two years. I had booked a color for the first time with my regular stylist. When I arrived 5 minutes early, I was told she was running 15 minutes late. Annoying, but not the end of the world. So, about ten minutes past my appointment time she takes me to the chair. I think we are about to get started, when follows 15 minutes of questions about what I wanted done. I was pretty straightforward but she insisted on letting someone named Carol review my color choice and consult even further. Carol comes out to speak with me, while my stylist finished up her previous client. It was clear she was stalling with me to finish up with the other cut she was doing. I was very honest with Carol and told Her I needed to leave by a certain time, and now that it was 30 minutes past my start time, that was in jeopardy. In the end, Carol (who has no business in customer service) decided that I should return another day because my CRAZY request to start on time was just not going to work with their abilities. She literally snatched the cape off of me and walked off. Rude, rude rude. I guess if you can't take the heat when your staff runs behind and jeopardizes client satisfaction, stay out the kitchen. I had ignored previous negative reviews of this salon because they do a special cut that I like.....guess I should have taken the advice of others the first time around. Don't waste your time or money here....because your time isn't NEARLY as precious as theirs. Horrible way to run a local business when salons in Memphis are a dime a dozen. read more

My experience at Great lengths was horrible. i was a new client and I wanted natural looking highlights on my very curly hair. A rookie stylist, that clearly didn't know what she was doing because she asked her boss what to do every step of the way, used a foiling technique on my hair. I would like to encourage everyone to look up what foiling does to curly hair, NOT THE RIGHT METHOD. Even the deva curls website itself says their stylist use the pintura method, which is what I expected. Another thing, is she combed and ripped through my hair when it was completely dry. #1 RULE OF CURLY HAIR: DON'T BRUSH IT WHEN ITS DRY! I knew the end product wasn't going to look natural and I made the mistake of giving Kayla a chance to finish the foils, but I still wasn't happy. It looked like random lines going down my head, it didn't follow my curl pattern at all. I asked them to take it off and they were very rude about it and yanked on my hair very roughly to brush through the knots that SHE MADE. I ended up leaving the salon with fewer highlights than I came in with. My original highlights were one of my favorite things about my hair, which is why I wanted more. Now those are gone too. I HAD THE BEST EXPERIENCE EVER TODAY AT GREAT LENGTHS!!! To begin, as soon as I walked in the door I was greeted by a warm and friendly staff. My stylist, Melody was ready for me and gave me a detailed, in depth consultation. She listened intently to all my concerns and gave me her honest, professional feedback. I was so impressed with her knowledge of my hair type and color and she made me feel confident and secure in her ability to meet all my needs! She did a full weave using several shades of blonde and it is absolutely beautiful! AND if that wasn't enough, another AMAZING thing happened...she gave my frizzy, curly hair a Deva cut and when I saw it I couldn't believe my eyes! My hair has NEVER looked so good! This was the 1st time in my life that I didn't want to change a little something...a touch up here or there, but not today! My hair was PERFECTION when I walked out the door! I couldn't be more pleased with Melody, Paula, (her assistant) and everyone I encountered there! Melody and Paula even gave me detailed instructions on how to achieve this exact look at home! I saw so many beautiful cuts and color being done by all the hairdressers. I can't wait to go back and to tell everyone I know about Great Lengths Salon!
