This was my first time visiting a Paul Mitchell training school, and I went in for a simple haircut to clean up some split ends. I didn't have an appointment but was able to walk in, wait about 20 minutes, and then get matched with a student stylist. The environment felt chaotic, with lots of people coming and going, customers waiting on the bench and stylists sitting around. It wasn't always clear how the process worked, and communication from the front desk to customers could have been better. They also mentioned free Wi-Fi, but no one knows the password! My cut took about an hour and 30 minutes, which is longer than expected for something so simple. However, since this is a training school, students need to pause for instructors to check their work, which explains the pace. In the end, only about an inch was trimmed off, and my hair looked the same. I saw there were very little hair on the floor. It was a ln ok experience for $15, but not something I'd likely do again. read more

I personally had a great and streamlined experience. I called to schedule an appointment but had to leave a message with when I would like to be scheduled. I was called back within the day and scheduled for a women's hair cut. When I arrived I was seen within 15 minutes and my student stylist was Barbie- she was wonderful! I think she did a great job with my haircut/layers/face framing, and she called in her teachers for help and guidance. The haircut was $10 total and I made sure to leave her a tip. Overall, I'm happy with the experience, and I'm happy to have done my part to help learners practice their craft :) read more

Okay haircut/style here. Trying to watch the budget and want to give students an opportunity to learn. When I called in, I asked for a Phase 1 appointment so I'd get a $12 cut. When I got in the chair, I was told by the instructor that the website was wrong and it would be starting from$17 -$23. That's fine and I consented to proceed but it irks me that the website is still showing that allegedly incorrect pricing 2 weeks later. If the website is wrong, why aren't they correcting it? My gal did some uneven cutting at first so I lost a little extra length while cleaning that up. Again, not a big deal. That's what I signed up for. My style was just blow drying my hair somewhat straight. It was still wavy in parts so I went home and straightened it. All in all, it was okay. The space seemed busy and energetic. I kinda prefer Aveda at this point but I'd try them out again if I needed to. read more

Terrible, terrible, terrible! I took my 94 year old mom in for a phase 2 student to do a haircut, perm,set & style. They said they cut an inch off of her hair, had 2 students winding the perm rods. The manager came over to roll her hair in rollers and style it when dry. All of this took 5 hours. Couldn't tell her hair was even cut and her hair looked the same the next day as when I took her in. Never did get that phase 2 student and we did pay for the haircut she never got. The students there were all over the place, eating, goofing around, etc. Very unprofessional place. I bought a Groupon and had my hair dyed at Paul Mitchell. I went a little darker in color as my hair was pretty washed out/brassy. Breia R. and her teacher, a very kind and knowledgeable lady, did a really good job at helping me choose a color. Breia, the student, had been there since Sept. and did a fantastic job on the color. She timed it just right, and she did great at blow drying it out. The teachers always checked back with the student and with me. I'm going back! read more

By far the best hair school I have ever visited. The ladies at the front counter are always nice and prices are very low. The students are at various levels, and if they are unsure or do not feel comfortable with something they will ask the supervisor for assistance. It does take a little longer than a visit to a full-price salon though, because the students are in training and have their work checked off by the supervisor. The students learn the latest techniques in cutting and coloring, and you leave feeling fresh and trendy. Hair cuts are $10, mini manicures are $5.... can't beat those prices! read more

I wrote a review this morning about my experience getting a perm at the Paul Mitchell School in Madison. I had an issue with the perm and waited a day and a half before anybody called me back. I was mad so I wrote a review. Not very flattering either, but I want to add that the supervisor contacted me a short time ago and is willing to help work with me to give me some treatments on my hair and try to analyze what happened. I went out on a limb to try this place out as I am a college student (on a budget of course) & wanted to try it out. The reviews below mine had me a little nervous but let me tell you I have NEVER loved my hair so much or felt so comfortable in a salon environment. Every single person there was happy, smiley, and seemed to love what they were doing. I was lucky enough to get Nate and he was phenomenal. I got the pamper package for manicure pedicure and hair style. All three were pretty awful. I definitely understand they are students, so of course I wasn't expecting top-notch quality. Pedicure- My toes still have cotton on them from the cotton ball she used to remove the previous nail polish. My manicure has air bubbles and nail polish on the sides of my finger. And my simple blowout turned out like shit. I told her I like it with a large round brush and curled under at the ends ... instead she did it with the flat brush then went back once everything was dry with a small round brush at the ends. I have never had a blowout done like this and it looks terrible. There are bumps all over it & the bottom half is still wavy from my natural waves. I don't know how the teacher signed off on it and in general everything just looks like crap. The girls are sweet - the receptionist was friendly & it was easy to make an appointment. The girl who was working on me was very nice. I normally go to the Aveda school in Milwaukee -they would never sign off on my hair like this. I wanted to try this place since it's closer to me, if I was desperate I may try this place again for a blowout as it could've just been the stylist who is terrible - but overall I would not recommend this place. read more

I usually get the pamper package which is a fantastic price for everything that is included. I've had a few students, but mainly seen the same one, who has now graduated. I only had an issue with one of the students there. I understand they are students and still learning, but she didn't even know the basics. I felt that without having the basic skills, the student shouldn't be out on the floor. I was offered a complimentary service for the next time for the inconvenience. Now that my regular student is graduated, I will be back to try someone else. read more

This is a Paul Mitchell school and salon open to the public. It's very hip and busy. Various levels of new stylists-in-training are available to the public. You do pay less to get your hair done here, but it may take a bit more time since they consult with their supervisors. I go to one young lady there regularly and her skills rival my previous stylists from other salons (if not better)! I find it well worth my time and my color and cuts always look nice. They want to make sure you are happy before leaving. On Thursdays, they do men's haircuts for only $5. Sandy at the front desk is always friendly and the staff makes sure you are comfortable. This is the worst experience I have ever had. I understand it's a school but with the two reviews I figured it was okay. The decor and atmosphere is a really fun and there are tons of hair stations and people working. They were very nice on the phone and my appointment was easy to schedule. I don't really know how to express my anger here--I was here for 5 1/2 hours for a touch up on my highlights. My hair ended up being white and orange. Also the highlights were so far back that I had dark roots in comparison to this basically white highlights I had in my hair. Also I understand people are learning but if they can't even do basic steps for hair then they shouldn't be out on the floor. The person who did my hair basically had her boss by her the whole time because she couldn't put the foil on right, or she put two much hair in the foil, or the foil was sliding down, or she put too much dye on it. It was absolutely ridiculous. But I guess this experience doesn't speak to highly of the people who are working if her boss didn't even catch what was going on. 5 1/2 hours for highlights... you have to be kidding me. I ended up telling her to not blow dry my hair and I left. Now I have been wearing a hat for 3 days because I can't go to work with orange hair, and I am paying $150 to get this hair into something I can show in public. Seriously just pay the extra money because you never know what will happen. read more

Where do I start? We (because before I said I want this or that, I wanted to know what was a realistic expectation based on the color and style I already had) decided on a balayage, I specifically requested several times that I just wanted my hair color to look different. I asked them to trim my hair I said 3 inches the young lady said it looks more like 6, I said fine no problem. They asked how high do you want the color to go, I said as close to the root as possible. So what went wrong? EVERYTHING! I went in there with limited expectations because it's a school but wow was I in for a huge disappointment! My hair color is very similar to what I walked in with ( lighter with LESS not more highlights) my roots look like I haven't done my hair in months, most highlights start about 4-6 inches from the root. But the worse most troublesome part is that after they showed me the length of my hair, the instructor was "touching up" my hair cut AFTER it was colored and frizzy because they couldn't even dry my hair correctly she chopped off at least another four inches of my hair!!! I don't know how 6" turned to 10" (or possibly 12") and if that's not terrible enough my hair will no longer curl up. I'm sure if someone else at the same place would've done my hair it would've turned out fine but the two young ladies who did it were not following instructions, instead they kept throwing jabs at each other and mocking what the instructor was saying. read more

Being a former student of this school, please advocate for yourself and know your school contract and their policies since they will change them in midstream which could affect your financial responsibility. Spend some time observing a classroom setting and talk to other students about their experiences before making a final choice, and if it is the right fit because ultimately they will welcome you with open arms in the beginning and sell you a good line. It is a great facility and full of hugs and positivity but slow to respond to any issues. The evening instructor is extremely knowledgeable in the industry. Probably, one of the best I've seen. Overall, a good school but be informed of what their expectations are and what you want out of the school. read more

I had been a client for years and years. Almost since it opened. It has been going downhill the last few years till finally bad enough for me to not think about a good deal it is (and it is, price-wise) to leave go to a regular salon and pay regular salon prices. I have had many, many different 'future professionals' through the years. I could tell how the later ones just were not being taught as well as before or for whatever reason just did not care as much. Even worse, the learning leaders seemed to not care either or check as they should. They set the standard, so perhaps why the trainees lack enthusiasm about the job too. Like I stated above the price is a deal. Just the headaches of going there and not getting my hair correct time after time after time were not worth it anymore. My husband actually was the one who said "Please go somewhere else. You use to come home so happy and want to go out. Now you come home and complain about what they did to your hair". I am now three visits to a 'regular' salon, I can not describe how happy I am in comparison! I will never be back to PM. If by chance they read these reviews (Hope they do). There are two levels of students who cut your hair. As luck would have it, I got the less experienced of the two levels on the day I visited. The girl did a wonderful job in terms of cutting the hair. But she took TWO HOURS to cut my hair. She was mortally afraid of cutting hair, and she would only snip here and there. Two hours for men's hair -- that's too much! If I am extremely bold, I will go back to try the more experienced level, but only time will tell :) read more

Was there for a mani pedi. We had new students which did a nice job. However The products they were given to use were horrible. The nail polish, topcoat and basecoat were so thick and old they could barely put it on our nails and toes. I can only suggest anybody going for a Mani/pedi that you bring your own topcoat nail polish and primer. As a result of the old product my daughter and I had to take our nail polish and toe polish off within hours of having the service. This is no reflection of the students doing the job. read more

I stopped in to get a hair cut, the student ushered me in back to wash my hair and then sent me back to her station and she would meet me there. As I was starting to sit the chair spun and I ended up falling. I'm no spring chicken any more and I fell hard. I ended up with a 4 inch cut, scrape in my left arm, a cut on my right knee, a goose egg on my right leg, and a 4 inch by 4 inch bruise on my back. I needed help getting up because I was in such pain. I believe I was in shock and I was shaking so bad and very, very embarrassed to the point I wanted to get out of there. They asked if I was ok and I said no I hurt bad. They took an incident report and let me go. As I'm limping to my car I noticed people staring at me, I get in my car and see that they didn't even brush my hair out. It was wet and matted. My main surprise is that they let me leave there when I was still in slight shock. I never even received a call from them to see if I was ok. So I know I wont go back there again. read more

Took my 14 yr old daughter here for a father daughter day haircut. Took over 2.5 hours for her wash and cut.....!? then the student cut herself and bleed all over my daughter like it was ok to continue! now for my hair lets just say i went home to shave my head. its a beautiful mess as far as the decor. please dont waste your time or hard earned money here. read more

I went to this school for just a haircut and asked for a 1/2 inch off my hair, which ive been trying to grow out. after the haircut i ended up with over 3 inches off!! i am so unbelievably pissed off and will NEVER BE RETURNING! dont go there its really nothing special. read more

I was in a bridal party and the bride made appointments for 4 of her bridesmaids to get their hair done at this beauty school. (Luckily for the bride she went somewhere else). I had been to the ViCi beauty school in Greenfield multiple times and have always left satisfied with the job they did. I assumed my experience here would be somewhat similar. I was very wrong. I had an idea of what I wanted and showed a picture to my stylist. She said it seemed easy and wouldn't be a problem. Within 10 minutes she was asking other instructors and fellow students to help her. This would have been fine with me, except that my hair ended up looking NOTHING like the picture I showed her. I counted and had 7 different ladies working on my hair throughout my two hour up-do. I politely pointed out numerous times things that I wanted differently and they attempted to fix it a bit, but it still looked completely different. My original stylist left for a few minutes and let one of her classmates work on my hair. While she was doing this one of the instructors came by and whispered to the girl working on my hair that my original stylist just got "overwhelmed". She then apologized that my hair didn't look like my picture. While this was going on, one of the other bridesmaids in our party had to ask for her hair to be redone three different times, and finally one of the instructors had to finish it. Like I said, I have been to a beauty school before. I understand the process and that it will take a bit longer and mistakes may happen. However, this place was ridiculous. I was there for over two hours and my hair was horrific. Finally, I gave up and went to the cost cutters two doors down. (The district supervisor there is an angel!) She said she understood and people come directly from the school all the time. She took my hair down (laughed at the amount of hair spray and bobby pins in my hair), re-curled my whole head, put up and updo (in less than 20 minutes) and only charged me $20. I would NEVER EVER go to Paul Mitchell's beauty school again. The place was a disorganized hot mess. (I even left out the part where it took 4 people to put a braid in- not even a french braid-just a braid). read more

A friend and i decided to have a girls day. We ordered the pamper package. Their idea of "pampering" is different then mine! The "pampering" we received included... the girls more worried about checking their phones, talking to each other about their boyfriends and vacations. The chairs for toes were uncomfortable. The color selection was slim and had to change choice of color because most were clumpy and dried up. The nails (toes and fingers) were jagged along with cuticles and the painting looked like a child did it. We decided to have our eye brows done, BIG MISTAKE! They were uneven and they burnt the skin. No "teacher" came to see how students were doing just signed sheet and walked away (the 3 of them were huddled talking by the desk). When it came to 4pm the girls rushed our hair and the rest of the students and teachers were yelling, slamming garbage cans and cleaning. When we were done they rushed us out the door. This was a waste of money, time (3 and a half hours) and vacation day! read more
